The Russians weren't "conned out of Alaska" in 1867. Emperor Alexander II tried to sell it to the British first but the British didn't want it. The Americans were not exactly over the Moon about buying it and called it Seward's Folly because the only apparent wealth it had ever had was fur and that had all gone by then. Yeah, but invading the Ukraine and invading the United States are two entirely different ordeals. The United States has the largest by tonnage navy in the world with the furthest reach of any navy, the largest as well as most technologically advanced air force in the world, the third largest standing army in the world and the second largest nuclear stockpile in the world with an economy to support it and allies to supplement it. Ukraine is part of no alliance treaties, had outdated equipment, an extremely weak economy and only had the benefits of a large standing army that unfortunately has little to no air force capable of supporting it. Invading one is not like the other.

I'm British and the story I was told about Alaska was that the British wanted it. The Russian Empire didn't want a direct border with the British Empire so they sold it the US which at that time they saw as a small unimportant state that could serve as buffer state between the two big empires of Britain and Russia. It was sold for a few reasons and that was one of them. But to this day, Alaska remains very wild. It can be a miserable terraine and as impossible to take like it would be taking on grabbing Siberian territory. It just isn't possible. They still alot of parts of Alaska that use dog sleds. There is no possible scenario where Russia could conquer Alaska. Even if their conventional military was stronger, USA's policy on use of nuclear weapons clearly says that they have no problem using them to defend their territory, or the territory of their allies. So even if the Russian military could defeat the US military and invade Alaska, they'd drive right into the blast radius of a tactical nuke. And if they want to escalate things, both countries would use their strategic nukes against each other's cities and they still wouldn't conquer Alaska because we'd all just be dead. So either both countries would destroy each other or Russia just wouldn't attempt something so stupid.

That sounds like a crappy military to me. The Americans are supposed to be in a fear of that under performing military? Ukraine is extremely weak and yet Russia who's more powerful is struggling even more so on their own damn border. They can't even keep their troops well supplied. They retreated from Kiev and don't give no bs that "It wasn't their main goal" nonsense either. They couldn't take the smoke so they had to try something new. Russia thought it would take Ukraine in less then a month and got embarrassed. They gotta do something to save face. They don't even have control of the airspace that they're waging war in. Russia lost over 35,000 in four months and is doing worse then when they invaded Afghanistan.

@Bahoug Otienne lol there’s no McDonald’s where I come from. And yes, we eat everything we catch. There aren’t any roads in or out and the only way to travel is by boat or plane. Or by the river when it’s frozen. Because of that, everything that gets shipped there is very expensive. It’s cheaper to hunt and eat the things you catch than to buy stuff at the singular store there. Maybe check out a video or two about the native villages of southwest alaska and Yup’ik values.

And shipping by plane is cheaper than making roads that need to be maintained but it’s also kind of expensive at the same time. Not all airports up here are very big and there’s a lot of gravel airstrips that only small planes can land on. Things that get shipped here include basically the essentials like sugar, wheat, salt, rice, wood, nails, tools, gas and ammunition. We even get Soda, junk food and Amazon prime delivery (literally takes two weeks at best to make it to some places for some reason). It’s all pretty expensive because of the whole shipping process though, which is why subsistence hunting is still a thing here.

For more than 75 Years the countries of Middle and Western Europe enjoyed to live together in peace. This is remarkable especially for Germany and France who had a war every now and then in the past. Now as most of the borders are not visible anymore it does not matter to which country a particular piece of land belongs to. Even the relations between Germany and Poland became better after almost no German is thinking anymore about the return of those territories lost to Poland after WW2. EU citizen can travel and chose their place to live and work, can do their business or buy real estate freely within the EU not thinking too much about some territories and states. These avantageous conditions could also apply to more countries if they would join the EU, especially Ukraine and even (don't be surprised) - Russia. After all these decades when Russia lived behind the iron curtain, we forgot that Russia belongs to Europe. Even its European part is the largest country of Europe by population as well as by size. As a part of the EU it would not matter who the Donbas and Krim belong to. But of course this vision is now more far away than ever. Some part of the Russians are thinking: "We are the Russian Empire, we cannot belong to something". And some Europeans think that Russia is too large to be seamlessly integrated. Now after Russias misbehaviour (to be polite) we can forget about this vision for decades. But in fact it is sad to see how Russia is destroying and isolating itself under Putin. Finally Russia has to beg China to become their 34th province. Conclusion: Almost every country has changed its size or place, gained or lost some territory in the past. The world would be a very unpeaceful place if all countries would enforce their claimes by special military operations. Especially Russians should remember that they always demanded to keep the Status Quo. And they should be aware the Status Quo is not the status of some self-chosen time in history, some fifty or hundreads years ago. Russia was not forced to sell Alaska for about 7 million dollars and it was not forced to accept that Ukraine becomes independent. So both is Status Quo now.

The problem is that the EU works because its citizens regard themselves as european. The governments agree to follow laws and atempt to do away with corruption. Failing to do this would lead to the failure of the EU. Russia has a long way to go before it could join the EU - there was a chance definitely but the state was too weak and now the biggest gangster is in the Kremlin, basically we're back to the cold war. Eventually it's likely Russia will implode and break up, I would expect the Chinese to "stabilise" at least those parts of Russia that were former Chinese territory - After Ukraine Russia owuld find it hard to argue and with a fractured governement and unclear nuclear command eastern Russia would find it hard to resist and asymetric operation.

The Ukrainian artillery has done such a good job in the warehouses of the enemy that Russia is starting to export ammunition from Belarus, Belarus Gayun reports. Loading of ammunition into 100 covered wagons for the transportation of explosive materials (hazard class 1) has begun in Belarus. According to BelZhD, ammunition will be transported from Belarus to the Russian Federation in these wagons.
