A bit over a year ago, I published a video about things that smart cruise passengers always do on their cruise. And it turned out to be a massive hit, with nearly a million views.
Now, I'm back with a dozen MORE things that smart cruise passengers do for their trip... and these might even be better than the original list. Trust me, they are all things that you'll want to know for your next cruise.
For instance, I'll tell you how you can possibly get money back on your cruise fare after you've already booked. A massive waste of time that smart passengers know to avoid. And even how a certain cruise offer may be the best deal that you'll find.
Have more smart tips? Be sure to put them in the comments below!

This may be TMI...but we take a couple rolls of those doggie doo bags. Each roll is about the size of a C battery. They are darkly colored and can discretely hold all kinds of personal refuse. This helps keep you ship-shape without causing any issues for the plumbing or the waste bin. Like I said, probably TMI😅

Thx, I found a roll left in a hotel room and I could not figure out what these mini bags on the very small roll was for.😅

Cruizely- Bigger is not always better. After more than 25 cruises, we have come to the conclusion that the mega-ships are for the younger, more adventurous traveler. A few years ago, we took a chance and booked on the Norwegian Epic. WAAAAY too big for us. We enjoy the more laid back, traditional cruise experience on ships with 2,500 passengers or less. To each his on, I guess. As a couple in our mid 70’s, smaller is better.

it's mentioned in the list linked in the description, but it's not said in the video, so mentioning it here. DO NOT flush ANYTHING other than the PROVIDED toilet paper down the ship toilets. that includes outside TP. just because it's TP doesn't mean it's good for a ship's septic system (and certainly anything that's not TP, even if it's labelled "flushable" should go without saying. wipes labelled "flushable" generally shouldn't even be flushed on land, tbh).

The line at guest services: we got a room that someone had hotboxed in, not sure how they achieved that but that’s what it smelled like, and we preferred a room with less of a distinct odor so we went to guest services. Other people have a nonfunctional room key, are changing the credit card on their account, want to put cash on their account, are looking for a room upgrade, or whatever they need help with. Those people don’t want to be in that huge line, either, but they want a positive experience so in line they are.

I wound up having to go down to guest services within 10 minutes of getting to my room. The connecting door wasn’t unlocked yet, and I didn’t have my key card in my lanyard and around my neck yet. My bff needed me to pass her something I was holding for her. I was trying to hold the door open and toss it to her. I moved my foot and the door closed. I had to walk down to the elevator, and go to guest services barefoot. I called it the walk of shame.

Great overall, but I couldn’t disagree more about boarding later. I like to get in the ship early. If you still have any reservations it arrangements to make then you can do it right away. Vacation starts when you get on the ship, so get a couple of extra hours by being among the first to board. Carry on isn’t really a big deal to have with you for a little while.

For me, only travel with what can fit in carry on luggage. Never leave bags with anyone and allow yourself to live without a couple things like soda for a few days. The one bottle on wine can also fit in carry on luggage btw. Lol. If you are flying into it, buy the wine in the first store you visit on the city of port before boarding. Allow yourself plenty of time for getting a couple last minute items in the cruise port. Most importantly, all you really need is money, your meds, about 5 outfits that are easy to dry, sunscreen and bug spray. Obviously papers and whatever personal documents you need, but mainly, the money and time are way more essential than spending hours at the bag checkout in an airport. Simplify your travel with a 20 pound carry on with wheels and learn to survive with that for a couple weeks. You do not need too much stuff, you need time and money

I get an inside cabin and hike my backside up on deck to look at the pretty scenery. The one thing an inside cabin really needs are plugs near the bed. I bring a non-surge extension cord with both usb and electrical plugs. Dress for embarkation in very comfortable clothes in case you don't meet up with your luggage for several hours after boarding. Always get to the port city a day early. Yes, a hotel is an added expense, but worth every penny in lack of stress. Airlines are notorious for delayed flights. You don't want to miss a cruise because your flight was delayed or rerouted.
@maytemcconnell8957

Those lines on the first day of embarkation to Guest Services is for cabin upgrades. I have been on over 50 cruises in my young life, I always book my cruise when I see a great sale and then watch it weekly. I also do the same with the beverage packages. I have found that bringing small clip magnets helps to stay organized. You can clip hats, those pack of wipes, any paperwork and lots of other light items and keep them off your table. We have always checked in when first available and don't drive ourselves. I have a limo company pick us up at embarkation and at disembarkation. If you do the math, the price you pay to park your vehicle and the stress of worrying if something could happen to your vehicle out weighs the minimum cost of a full limo or executive sedan, which is what we usually take. Upon earliest check in, it's usually not too crowded. You can get the e-muster done quickly, grab a drink, go find a place to relax and book all those events(shows, trivia, ice skating, etc) and then grab lunch either in the buffet or other restaurant that is not crazy and full. This has worked so well for us. ❤ We tip very very generous to those people that provide a device to us. We don't believe in the share the pot gratuities. Most of it goes to the least working people (officers & such). They already get paid much better than the low people on the pole that do the bulk of the work. My husband brings a couple hundred dollars in $5, $10 & $20 just for tipping.

I start at my bank and look for a bundle of $2.00 bills ands tip wait staff and on late nights often just had a dollar or so to crew cleaning and working hard in the bathrooms for their service, I once had a crew member cleaning my dining room restroom , remind me I had tipped him earlier in the day, I realized he was on a dock pushing a wheelchair and I claimed a ride a 1000 yards from the ship and was struggling to return with heat and health issues... I am with you about the lines about guest services specially with carnival, and royal the problem I have encountered and face to be in that line it’s about the cruise card not working while trying to go into the stateroom and putting my belongings inside. I dislike having to wait in line, in this situation I cannot wait until the line dies down. Other than that I never visit guest services unless a different issue comes up. Wipes always packed in my bag we never go anywhere without them, if we have to fly, then we buy them in the city where we land. Same thing with the disinfecting wipes to clean everything around the stateroom specially remotes for tv , phone, light switches, door handles, balcony rail and etc. This is a great topic.

Cruise advice: I get strong magnetic hooks to hang around the room. I usually take about 20 - I keep them in a zipper utility pouch I have purchased at home depo. In the aisle where you find tool bags. These hooks are very strong. A trick to easily removing them from the metal wall or ceiling - is to turn them slightly as you pull them away from the surface. The room is made of all metal - so the magnetic hooks work well to free up space. I get USB extension connectors - connecting them together - so I can hang my cords from the usb plugs - up the wall and across the ceiling - using the super strong magnetic hooks ( I get the hooks and USB connectors from Amazon) then there are no cords are on the floor to trip over. You can also use the hooks to hang wet clothing to dry. Purchase an adapter to change the European electrical outlet into a USA electrical outlet. To double your electrical outlets. You can take a small extension cord - that does not have a power surge. They will confiscate any ones with a power surge. I get those at the dollar store. I also purchase plastic hangers from the dollar store. I take around 20 or so. The wooden hangers, the cruise line provides take up a huge amount of room. I replace them with the plastic ones and presto I have almost double the closet space. I give my room attendant the wooden ones to take away. I like to buy small magnetic fans, usually two, that are USB charged to use. I place them on the walls - they are magnetic so they stick onto the metal wall. I need the white noise and air. The air flows better around the room and the sound at night to me is comforting. I charge them while I’m out and about all day, then use them when I return to the room. Another great investment is a clear plastic hanging shoe rack, to hang over the bathroom door ( facing outside). I then place - varies items in the clear - see through pockets - medicine - lotion - hair brushes etc. very important, purchase Poo-potpourri to spray after a visit to the restroom. Purchase Baby wipes. Sometimes toilet paper when you leave the ship is in small supply. Every time you order from the bar, ask for a bottle of water. Collect them in your room, to take with you off the ship. Get magnetic decals to put on the door to your room. Coming home late at night drunk helps you find your room so much easier, all the doors look alike. Store all your suitcases under your bed to make extra room in your room. Take snapshots of your passport information and vaccine information. In case you loose them. A personal like, is, I purchased a magnetic cell phone case for my phone. I absolutely love it for travel and home. At home I can stick it to the refrigerator and on the cruise I stick it to the wall. It is always in my line of sight and it frees up counter space. One very helpful travel trick: take a screenshot of your airline boarding pass. If for any reason your phone dies - you can still get on the plane. If you have any helpful hints for a better cruise, please share.

I am definitely not a fan of boarding later in the day. For me it is worth the line and having my carry on in exchange for starting earlier and having lunch on the ship while it isn't full. You can give your luggage to the porter for a tip of a couple dollars per suitcase and only carry on what you need until 10pm the first evening; you probably will get your luggage delivered before 6pm. I always wait until last call to disembark the ship, almost no line when you disembark at last call and you get to relax during breakfast.

Great video! Other tips, do your online check in early, like a day or two early, choose your shore excursions a month or two in advance, especially if they're on sale. Not much is left to choose from as you get closer to the cruise. If you want a suite, book 4-12 months early, they go super fast! If your cruise requires you to reserve seats in advance for entertainment, do that asap! Bring your own bug spray, sunscreen and sea sickness meds, they are expensive in the ship stores. Check your bill the afternoon or early evening before the last day of the cruise to avoid long lineups at guest services. Use the apps provided by the cruise line to navigate your daily activities onboard, it's so handy and gets updated if there are changes to starting times of shows etc. Hmmm, what else?

The price can also go up. I was just double checking some information about one of the excursions I booked 2 months ago for Cruz. I'm going on in July. One of the excursions went from 209.95 to $279.95. we're still almost 3 months away from the cruise.

So, we booked our cruise 384 days before our sail date....82 days to go 🤗🤗🤗🤗 but, my most helpful hint is to purchase everything during black Friday. Cococay was 50% off (4 of us paid less than $360)... way better than the $800 the first time. The refreshment package and zip-lining, Oh, and water jet-skis 50% off. We got the all day roller coaster for 34 bucks for the 4 off us... And they are sold out along with the jet-skis. People don't realize that just because you purchased it now and were smart enough to lock in the price, doesn't mean it can not be canceled and refunded with no penalties if canceled before the cruise. Lock in now... think about it later so there's no regrets.

Well done. Know boarding, luggage, etc. procedures for YOUR ship. I agree that most lines are the same. Word of warning, Virgin is very different. Show up at your assigned time and you will board immediately. Luggage will be at your cabin within 15-30 minutes. Show up early and you'll get to stand and wait..Know what reservations you need to make in advance and when it is possible to book these. Check your bill regularly (on an app or TV on many lines) so you can correct any issues ASAP. DO NOT leave this for the last day.

They surprised us with an upgrade to an obscured view balcony room. It was a wonderful trip! Excursions through Princess were good. We also used Viator. Our excursions turned out to be good. However it would have been nice to realize what it meant that tickets to things like the duomo weren’t included and how to order tix. Some tours felt rushed. It was a great sampling of Europe. 1) Fare Drops: yes, you can often get the cruise line to lower your fare, but keep in mind you might lose any promos you have on the reservation such as extra loyalty points. Personally, I’d rather get triple points than save a hundred bucks. 2) Yea, I don’t understand the long lines at guest services on the first day. 3) Agreed. I can’t imagine doing a long transatlantic without at least a window. 4) Here’s another: a box of gallon-sized Ziploc bags. Swimsuit not quite dry when it’s time to pack and go home? Shove it in a Ziploc bag. Got a toiletry that ALWAYS seems to leak? Put it in a Ziploc bag. 5) Boarding early is a “to each his own” situation, HOWEVER you want to get onboard early if you’ve not already made your shore excursion, restaurant, entertainment, and/or spa reservations. 6) Yea, I say it all the time: “the ship is the destination.” Sometimes I barely pay attention to the itinerary. 7) I agree on all of the “against the grain” suggestions. 8) While I get his point, I have so many points on NCL and I get so many perks I pretty much stick with them.. but I am trying Virgin later this year because they are offering status match. 9) Oh yea, do the bundle. Silly not to unless you don’t drink AT ALL. 10) Yea, stay away from the crane, key master, and coin pushers. 11) Yep. Prepay everything. 12) I disagree. A lot of extra weight to pack and a lot of trouble. Just get the drink package.

I always pay gratuities up front. I also always tip in cash besides that. I take $100 in $1's and $100 in $5's on every cruise just for tipping. Also every night before bed or 1st thing the next morning I check my account for charges on the TV in my cabin. So that if there's any charges that I don't recognize I can take care of it immediately. I always bring wet wipes but I DO NOT put them in the toilet. There's only been 1 occasion that I removed a gratuity. I had a massage at the spa and tipped $35 in cash not knowing they had already given her a $30 gratuity. I made sure to go back to the spa to explain to the masseuse. There was no problem since I had tipped her more than gratuity. I generally tip around $170 + on a 7 day cruise.

I check the prices a few times a week. I once got a fantastic deal on my 7 day on the Splendor. I had an interior on deck 4 and the was a deal for ONLY $300 more for a SPA SUITE. It included the THERMO pool, 2 classes each, the moist and dry sauna room and all the other suite stuff. This was before we made Platinum and the priority boarding was included. Just that was more than the $300 extra that I paid.

On one cruise out of Miami there was no parking in any of the garages. They directed people to an empty lot a fair distance from the ship. When we returned there was no one there to collect money. Saved hundreds. The long walk was worth it.

Pier 91 in Seattle has a large parking area, shuttle back to the pier. Can be reserved several months in advance. They say drop all passengers and luggage first, then go park. That means just the driver, without luggage, rides back to the terminal.

I am shocked. How could you recommend wet wipes over the onboard toilet paper. Yes the toilet paper sucks but wet wipes aren’t flushable onboard or back at home. Even wipes advertised as flushable are not. Ask any plumber. This is a MAJOR reason there are toilet blockages on ships. People flushing things they shouldn’t. Toilet paper breaks immediately on flushing wet wipes and “flushable” wipes don’t break down at all 🤦🏼‍♂️

as a plumber's daughter, I agree. I did look at his list that he linked, and I saw there he said not to flush them. he didn't give the same warning here, at least not that I heard, so I actually just made a comment about it. bringing your own toilet paper isn't really even good for the ship's system. same issue as wipes as it doesn't break down as easily as the paper the cruise lien provides (especially if people bring 2-ply rolls).

I missed where he said flush them. My family uses wet wipes at home and discards them in the trash next to the toilet. I'll 100% be bringing wipes. Toilet paper is not sufficient. Don't believe me? Wipe with toilet paper till "you're done," then use a wet wipe after...

That’s 100% correct, it’s a small price to pay for the convenience. The porters will not take them due to liability, getting lost, or busted open and damaged. Personally, I’m not too picky on soda, plus I always get the drink package, so I’ve never went this route.

Investigate the back of the cabin TV. Many have a USB plug as an extra place to charge your phone or other accessory. Also, if you have a USB adapter (without an extension cord) they prove to be very helpful on older ships. Additionally, GUYS: Bring a sport coat and a tie. If you can afford a cruise DRESS UP so you don't look like a shlump who lost their luggage.

I completely agree with everything in this video. I'd like to emphasize two pieces of BS. First, the pricing is very deceptive. When you see the price, always make a mock booking to see what the total really is. Like the video says, it is often a fantastic deal, but it will always be much higher than it appears. Second, I've met many people on cruise ships that will tell you how great it was to see real Mexico, or whatever country we visited for a whopping 6-8 hours. I little probing and they will tell you they wandered around port or took a cruise line excursion. Just so you know, you won't get an authentic view of the country or its people by doing such touristy things.

I always try to book a cruise line that I enjoy sailing on, and that also has the soda package that I prefer. No I'm not a Pepsi Drinker I'm a Coca Cola drinker so therefore I booked on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line because they have Coca-Cola products you cannot get a coke and rum on a ship that does not have Coke products. You have to get a Pepsi and wrong on Carnival and I believe Norwegian has switched from being a Coca-Cola cruise line to a Pepsi cruise line now. I don't recall but I believe that is the case. We used to sell on Norwegian a lot until here lately after they started doing all of their changes. We've switched to Royal

I am not convince he staff gets the full gratuity. I don’t mind the servers in the MDR getting tipped that way as they have the opportunity to get tips from a lot of passengers, but the room attendant only has so many rooms to serve. We learned that these men and women of are on 7 month contracts, and they’re from all over the world. I’m heartbroken that they have to be away from their loved ones for so long. Our MDR servers both have toddlers and elementary aged kids that will change so much while there gone, our room attendant has a one year old 4 year old and 8 year old. So for me, I want to make sure they get as much money for their efforts as possible.

We have mixed feelings about the gratuities. I don’t think the crew get all the $ that is collected for what we pay for gratuities. The cabin stewards and waiters work their butts off and deserve the bulk of the “crew appreciation “ we pay into. I have asked to remove half of that money one time and took the other half and split it equally between the cabin stewards and the wait staff. Now I just tip both $20-30 either at the beginning or the end of the cruise.

I think that technically the answer is, yes, I don't think it's on any cruise line's prohibited list BUT BUT BUT DON'T do it. the ship's septic system is not like on land. the toilet paper that you'd generally find more comfortable could cause all kinds of plumbing issues. if you absolutely must bring it, do not flush it. someone mentioned in another comment bringing dog poop bags. that's certainly an option if you bring your own TP. throw used TP in a bag before throwing it in the trash. absolutely don't flush it.
