I'm writing a book where the main characters all play different stringed instruments, for one i couldn't think of one, and searched for stringed instruments, and the interesting name of the Crwth sparked my interest. I am so glad i chose this, it sounds so beautiful...

I could never learn something like that and I had an extensive piano background from child hood through my twenties and gave it up. But they say if you know piano, you can learn anything. I don't think that is true. But at least I have an appreciation of others, for sure.

It doesn't look that different from playing a violin, or maybe a viola; depending on the scale-length. In a way even easier since playing only certain strings at a time doesn't seem to be an issue.
@almishti
@almishti 5 жыл бұрын
It's actually quite challenging and very different from modern bowed instruments! The bridge is flattened so, yes all strings are played at once, but also octave pairs in which each member of the melody pairs can be played together or contrapuntally, more or less. The holding position and bow position are also quite different. I've showed mine to some viola and violin playing friends and they are pretty baffled! Cass Meurig, a current master of crwth who started on violin, talks about how different it is in a video you can find on youtube. :)

Fun fact, Crwth (and crwths) is one of the few valid scrabble words with no vowels, that does not also contain a y. This is according to CSW19. However, you have about a one in 20,000 chance of playing this word. The most probable vowel-less play is "ST" (1 in 65 chance; meaning 'hush') and the least probable is "TSKTSKS" (one in about 34,000; "expression of annoyance"). So don't bother remembering the crwth the next time you play scrabble.

"you have about a one in 20,000 chance of playing this word" - Fun fact: That doesn't mean what you think it means. Maybe you've never played the game with any ability. I think I could make crwth happen in a half dozen games or less. I mean, come on - 3,1,4,1,3 is not an uncommon or difficult word to form.

@alvaroi.c.9278

I don't know the exact name in English, but it's a bridge-soundpost. The soundpost, unlike in modern stringed instruments, is integrated into the bridge, as an extension of one of its feet. This way, the sound is directly transfered to the back of the sound box. It's a resource used in many traditional instruments, such as the Calabrian lyre, the Chilean rabel or the Bulgarian gadulka.
