I feel like people are too quick to judge the new dynamic of Harley and the John. I honestly like it, and it's in theme with what Telltale has been shooting for : A more modern/realistic version of the batman mythos. I've seen a few people knock it off as "They're trying to cater to Feminists and SJWs." But those people are missing the point. She was at one point, his therapist, and he was her patient. There's an inherent power difference between those two roles, and Harley is taking advantage of that. She knows he's not mentally stable, and is using that to her advantage. It's not about the fact that she's a woman, it's about the fact that from the start of their relationship, she always had some kind of control over him, and knew his deepest most intimate opinions, and used those against him to get what she wanted. It's so interesting, because there are cases like that all over the place. Stories of some doctors and pharmacists, therapists and surgeons, using their expertise to trick or otherwise abuse their patients, which again, plays into the angle of semi-realism that the writers seem to be going for.

No matter what he does, he always gives it his own touch, while staying true to what he believes the message of the game is, or to what the personality of the character is. You know what I want now that we have seen how John Doe acts around Harley? I want to see their relationship turn from this (where John is submitting to her) to the more classic Joker/Harley relationship where she is willing to do anything he says at drop of the hat. I think watching this transformation could be neat... and it is also preferable just because I really like John Doe and would rather he be in charge. Or plan B.... John Doe ditches Harley and teams up with Bruce for good. I am 100% down for that man crush stuff and it seems like Cry is too.

I am not denying that most of the type Joker and Harley are in an abusive relationship. Don't get me wrong though, I do not hate this Harley, but I am less of a fan of the relationship dynamic. In my mind, Harley is not Harley unless she is working with/for the Joker. Harley's love for the Joker is as important to her as Bruce's love for his parents is to him! It is a key feature to her persona, it is what makes her stand out from other sidekicks and females in the universe. Her love, devotion, and connection with her emotions is original! Not many villains (excluding Freeze for example) have their hearts on their sleeve, so even though the 'weaker' Harley is less original than what we see here, I still enjoy seeing a villain who feels. This Harley is unique version of Harley Quinn, yes, but she does not bring anything to the table that some other batman villain does/could not. There are some changes I do not mind such as her character design, the fact that she is more violent, she is clearly not a ditz, and I don't even mind that fact that Joker was not the one who turned Harley crazy! These are changes I am okay with. But I refuse to like something just because it is different, especially when it changes one of the main aspects about a character. Unique does not always equal better. Oh, and I also don't care if she has been through a lot of crap in a lot of different stories. She is no angel in any of them after all. She is more than just a victim of Joker, she is a villain in her own right. A villain who has killed and ruined lives herself with or without Jokers directions. I won't pity her character just because she fell for a man who was psycho to begin with. There is also the fact that I like John/the Joker more than her. So yeah, I don't really enjoy seeing my favorite character in this game get toyed with by a character I only sort of like. What I would enjoy seeing is him snapping fully, with or without Harley in the picture I would want to see this. But since she IS in the story though, I see no reason their relationship has to be abusive. If that is your main concern, it would be a semi unique concept to actually have John continue to love her even after he snaps fully. He doesn't have to turn to violence towards her, he can totally keep being romantic for all I care, but seeing John get angry/jealous/protective and turning from a love sick puppy to the cunning 'Clown Prince of Crime' would be great. Plus, it would be so cool to see this Harley go from being in charge, not in love, and manipulating, to taking the back seat, sort of attracted to John, and even scared of who/what SHE helped create. Sorry for the super long response... Despite the fact that I just wrote paragraphs about this, at the end of the day I am still enjoying the story, this Harley, and this John Doe. I just love to watch character transformations, which is why seeing John and Harley switch from what they are here to a more 'unoriginal' relationship is my kind of story arc. I'm totally not looking for a fight but I had too many thoughts on this not to share so read all of this or not, up to you!

I love the role reversal, Joker (ejem, "john") is the submisive, aproval seeking unstable person who could be influenced in to a proper path by Bruce, and Harley is the abusive psycho that is using her counterpart to get what she wants. This is many times better than the forced Harley/Joker relationship in suicide squad, mostly because the spirits of the original charecters shine through in the intro, and we are given the time to re-locate in to this alternate take, whereas in Suicide Squad both charecters where cartoon charecters of themselves, which is ironic considering where the charecters come from.
