“Buffy” is generally a tremendously fun show. But it’s never *just* fun. “Prophecy Girl”, “Innocence”, “Passion”, “Becoming”, “Bad Girls”, “Graduation Day”, “The Harsh Light of Day” … it’s a show about growing up, and no matter how much we sell ourselves on that being “the best time of our lives”, it’s very often horrible. I’m a huge fan of S5 because it is so well-crafted, and the story (though often very dark and painful) is just so good, so right for “Buffy”. I hope you’ll come to appreciate it, but if not - well, it’s a big world with plenty of room for other opinions. I enjoy your reactions, and I hope you keep watching.

That’s the beauty of this season. It’s horrific. And it’s the first time we (the audience) have long term exposure to the true pain and struggle of the characters. The writing and plot makes you feel what they feel: struggling to get through, crying from grief and loss, fighting a battle that seems lost and impossible, wanting to quit and run away, but trying to push through for love. You become part of the gang and their story.

My guess is that Ben was born at the same time that Glory was imprisoned in his body, and that it took 25 years for her to finally find a way to escape her prison for brief periods. Hence her only showing up earlier this season. She must have already been in her human form when she was chasing the monks.

It's ambiguous whether or not the Taraka guy was human - he seemed to be strong enough to give Angel and Buffy a run for their money and they both have super-strength - she didn't know that cutting Gwen Post's gloved arm off would kill her and it's uncertain whether the zookeeper's death was deliberate. She has killed humans by accident before, and deliberately killed people who may or may not have been human, but think this was the first time she intentionally killed someone who was definitely human.

I loved the opening joke with Spike. Xander and Giles were just wasting precious time and Buffy has every right to put any one of them in their places at any time in the series for the exact reason that she explained to Xander in _The Harvest._ "She is the slayer and [they aren't]," but concerning this situation specifically, Dawn is officially her responsibility in a legal manner on top of Buffy also being the slayer. If Xander and Giles want to argue until Glory appears in front of them, they are welcome to not come along. As Buffy said "He stays. Get over it" [and lets move out while we still have the advantage of running.] was what she the part she was telling them without blatantly saying it.

The show is now reaching boiling point. In Spiral, Glory now knows Dawn is The Key. Spike turning up in the RV is funny with the slit in the front window. The scenes with The Knights chasing the RV and the ensuing fight is great. The mistake of getting Ben to come to treat Giles with of course the Scoobies not aware he is also Glory. The General explains to Buffy why it is all happening, and that there is no way to stop Glory unless The Key is destroyed. When Glory takes Dawn we can see Buffy becoming catatonic with stress. The build up to the finale is superb, and it does not disappoint.
@67Daidalos2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this thing about Glory being expelled then trapped in a human new born male for eventually dying at the end is a bit odd with the fact we were told there were calls for the meteorite thingy back to the Middle Age. My take is either the writers just shot themselves a bullet in the foot or voluntarily kept it blurry for having it bite us in the ass in a future season that never existed. My take to make it work is that, whenever Glory feels that the human body she's in is about to die (whether it's from illness or age) she can perform a kind of ritual that allows her to reincarnate, but as she's still under the curse, she can only do it in another newborn male, not her own body. The Key (and being back in her original dimension) being the only way for her to gain enough power to retrieve her own body and true immortality.

If Buffy were to kill Ben for Dawn, after everything with what she went through with Faith and the mayor's minion, that would be hypocritical of her. It would also make the writers look bad at fixing a story arc problem with a contradiction that big. Ben is an innocent trapped in Glory's problem of a curse, just like Dawn is an innocent from what the Monks did to create her and force her into Buffy and gang's lives. I still don't care for her, though. Buffy protected lives in the van from death by killing those who would kill all of them.

Humans (and chosen ones) can still kill in self defence or in the defence of the innocent. It is in in the spirit of spite, convenience, pleasure, or revenge that murder becomes a problem for the immortal soul. But even then in true remorse and proper penance, you still have a chance of redemption. For if redemption is truly unattainable, there is no point in truly trying to live life at all. We shall all be condemned to survive in a box until our soul is released from the body.

I always bounced off those knight guys really hard. So random so weird. Why wouldn't knights start using guns like all other soldiers did? Maybe they would make more sense if we knew more about Glory's origins, but oh well.
@MrDWinter2 жыл бұрын
Same. I mean, it felt weird for them to even exist. If Glory just arrived in this dimension a few years ago when Ben was born specifically to be her prison … why is there an ancient order of knights to fight her? For that matter, why were there a bunch of monks who knew what she was about and happened to have the one thing she wanted and must not get? And why did neither of these groups write anything down about her and her deal, or reach out to the Watchers Council and the Slayer for some help?
@TigerNightmare2 жыл бұрын
@@MrDWinter Glory wants the Key, but it is just a means to her end, it did not come into existence at the time of her banishment to Earth. The Key is ancient. The Order of Dagon, AKA the monks, were charged with protecting the Key because they believed it was sacred and held a greater purpose, something that wasn't really explored until the comics. If you didn't catch why the monks opposed Glory, it was because she sought the Key and she killed most of them before they made the Key become Dawn, and the last one died telling Buffy the truth. The Knights of Byzantium we don't know too much about, only that they were dedicated to fighting Glory and preventing her from using the Key because of the aforementioned apocalyptic interdimensional destruction, and destroying the Key regardless of its current form is the most obvious way to protect everyone. They use medieval equipment because they're a cult with devout traditions that include a forehead tattoo. Knight life 24/7, they don't put on khakis and work at Best Buy during the day.

@Talisguy2 жыл бұрын
£10 says that the writers came up with the sequence where medieval knights besiege an RV first, then worked backwards from there to work out why there would be knights in this story at all. It's a great set piece, but to me, the knights are by far the weakest part of a generally stellar season. So much about them just doesn't make sense to me. Why do they still use medieval weaponry? It's implied that they've been trying to destroy the Key since at least the middle ages, and they kept their gear out of tradition, and one of the knights called the group "an ancient order." OK, sure, I can roll with that. It's stupid, but I can roll with it. ... Except the Key has only been human for a few months. Were they going to stab it to death when it was a blob of energy? Glory mentioned the Key could have been anything from a log to a bike pump - what if the monks had turned it into a stone? Were they gonna kill the stone? And why would there even be a millennia-old order of knights dedicated to destroying the Key to prevent Glory from using it, when we learn in this episode that Glory has only existed in this dimension for 25 years?
@MrDWinter2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Apart from the set pieces and a little exposition, we could have done without the Knights altogether. It would have made more sense for the Watchers’ Council to send in a covert team to try and kill or capture Dawn, and for Buffy to have to deal with that.
@TigerNightmare2 жыл бұрын
I wrote about this in a reply to someone else, but the Knights of Byzantium's main thing seems to be fighting Glory and preventing her from causing the apocalypse with the Key. We don't know what they were up to before Glory was trapped within Ben. Probably burning witches.
@sirmoonslosthismind2 жыл бұрын
you credit the writers with putting much more thought into the knights than i do. i think they just realized too late that it was a huge mistake not to give glory any minions who can put up a fight and came up with the knights to try to fill that gap.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap of ‘Spiral’. May contain spoilers. In the previous episode, Glory caught up to the Gang and because she brain-sucked Tara, Tara unintentionally revealed that the Key was Dawn to her. Now they’re on the run from her with the added complication that Tara doesn’t know what she’s doing, and so Willow has to take care of her at the same time of protecting everyone from Glory. She plays a huge part in the run from her. Both her magical powers and computer technology skills are sorely needed. She is very necessary to the predicament they are all in and is very effective at keeping everyone safe. Proving that she’s the only one really capable of doing so, while Buffy is scrambling about trying whatever she can and feeling like she’s failing because she’s ‘The Slayer’, and her duty is to defend them from Big Bads the likes of Glory. So the fact that she has to run away to do that really bothers her. She’s never had to choose flight over fight before. Her Slayer powers are practically useless compared to Willow’s magical powers in this situation. So Willow’s proving that she’s on the same level as Buffy as a warrior, if not above her, at this point in the show. And although Glory is insurmountably physically stronger than the both of them combined, it says a lot that only Willow can seem to keep her at bay. And the fact that she can do it all the while looking after Tara? That’s quite the astonishing feat for a girl who once upon a time was the damsel-in-distress and couldn’t even protect herself from a soulless vampire. Willow has grew into her innate power, for the better or for the worse, and is not someone to be messed with anymore.
