I love Javed's comment on the confidence of a game just doing the thing it set out to do without resorting to material collection, crafting, Frankensteining other genres etc. This is why I fell in love with indie games in the first place. This one looks like a must-buy for me!

I don't know if I'd call this a platformer at all, platformers tend to be defined by their traversal methods being the primary focus, while this game clearly has combat as the primary focus. I'd be more likely to refer to this game as a hack and slash, even if that term is more often attributed to spectacle fighters/character action games in the modern age (quite erroneously in my opinion, spectacle fighters have a complexity to their systems that makes me think the term hack and slash is unsuitable).

Man, I heard of this game forever ago and thought it was super cool looking at the time - but then there was a string of games that came out a little while after about being a new reaper that I thought I had misremembered it as one of them, even if it didn't look much like what I was expecting (e.g. Death's Door). Really glad this review came out as not only does it sound right up my alley, but also lets me know I wasn't going insane!

Thanks for playing Javed 🙏🏻 This looks exactly like what I need after Death's Door. It's not available yet at time of comment, but I'm buying CC as soon as I can. Cheers and thanks for this review 🍻

It's giving the Demon Tower minigame from Night in the Woods, though a cat in a dungeon is a pretty low bar of similarity. Looks fun, great vid 😊

Played the demo for this (which was REALLY generous, I think I spent close to 3 hours in it), had a great time with it! Not that complex but the puzzles were challenging. I will say the music in the demo felt really unbalanced with the sound and I had to turn the music almost entirely off. Hopefully that came out better in the final release.

Very interesting, it does sound like something I would enjoy - a certain game I am playing at the moment also has an afterlife-linked theme but ladled on extra mechanics and collectables that took away the purity of the experience.

Honestly, I feel offended by the assertion that this game makes the case for games not needing to be complex to be fun or engrossing. From your script to the gameplay video you showcase, it's pretty evident that this game is plenty complex. It's a bit like saying classic Mega Man or Mario games aren't complex. Straightforward gamaeplay does not preclude a game from harboring complexity. By the same reasoning, crafting and skill trees do not inherently make a game complex. If those systems are not integral to the experience, they will never add additional complexity. Top two examples being Horizon Zero Dawn and the next-gen God of War games. In Horizon, crafting is a nonstop grind-fest with the game assaulting players with hints to craft items, quests to learn how to craft items, and gather-able resources never more than 1 second away from the player at any given time. And yet this does not make the game more complex because despite all of that it is not integral to the game. You can and very well might play the entire game without crafting anything. As an action-platformer thinly veiled as an RPG, Horizon's gameplay revolves entirely around movement and the utilization of various weapons with tougher enemies always being weak to specific types of weapons. Sound like Mega Man? Because yeah, it's just Mega Man. And that's FINE. The skill trees and crafting actually served to detract from what would have been an amazing core gameplay loop. GoW is similar, but more focused on skill/upgrade "trees". GoW and Ragnarok can not only both be played without upgrading anything, the only upgrades that ultimately help the player are damage and defense boosts. These are both things done BETTER in the original GoW game series. Where the new games let you 'customize' a couple weapons, the old games gave players a vast array of weapons with linear upgrade paths. This approach of many weapons which flat-out became stronger through investment still let players customize to a desired playstyle, but did the same thing by providing them a selection of weapons that behaved in dramatically different ways, then let them decide which ones to use. Same outcome, but one pretends to create complexity through allowing players to make bad choices, while the other offers just as much complexity, but with every choice being equally valid.
