You know, I've suffered from depression since like middle school. During middle school and the first couple years of high school, I was always on edge walking around like I had a chip on my shoulders. I felt like I wasn't worth anything, but when someone else treated me like I wasn't worth anything, it would get to me in a big way. During my sophomore year, I think, I started taking my mp3 player and going for a walk on our road listening to it. I would go out anytime I got stressed, and my dad would make me stressed a lot. Usually it was not big deal, but I went out even if the weather was bad or it was dark. I would go out and walk when the road was frozen and slipped a couple times. I would go out in the rain sometimes. My dad would tell me I'd get struck by lightning, but I wasn't worried about that. The only thing that worried me was that, on dark nights when the moon was barely visible, it would be hard to tell if anything was coming from the woods. Sometimes I would get scared that slenderman or something would come out from the woods, even though I knew that was ridiculous. Maybe I should have just gone in, but I had to walk. Eventually, I decided I would try to intentionally make myself scared to make walking easier long term. I would put scary sounding songs on my mp3 to play walking at night. Initially, it was way worse, but it became kinda fun. I would spook myself and get a bit of a rush that was better than any horror movie. After a while, I wasn't afraid of the woods at all and put hypnosis audios on my mp3 to put myself in a trance walking. A part of me wishes something would come out of the woods, though, so i can feel that feeling again.

i listened to this while illustrating a couple book covers for a university project, thematically about my youth growing up in a small sleepy town of less than a thousand people, surrounded by deep, dark, needle forests. Between the houses and the woods was a perimeter of empty fields, and then a black wall of trees marking the outer rim of the village. When I went walking from the bus to my home or when we were outside playing and it got dark, no light went through that wall of distant trees. It was not really creepy, but ominous, mysterious. It was a humbling feeling, the universe reminding you of your place, your insignificance, that no matter what happens in our small town, that this everlasting, enormous power observes in silent judgement. Looming, dark, and indifferent. Like old men dressed in long black gowns, gods of the old days, prior to man. I often dreamt about walking outside and a sudden, invisible force pulling me into the dark chasms between the old trees, flying across the fields and submerging into the black void. I always woke up right before the forest devoured me. When I was a teen we often did night walks to old huts in the woods where you can rent the place for a BBQ etc. The huts werent closed so we would enter and then just go home after hanging out there for a while. While my fear dwindled my respect for the woods never left. I dont believe in the supernatural, but I do believe there are powers outside of the narrow view of mankind. Things sometimes better left untouched.

You went into the forest, you needed some alone time so here you are, deep into uninhabited territory, nothing but a small lantern and your flintlock to keep you company, you had to eat your dog several days back due to the snow that now assails you. Not even the birds sing anymore. As you sit with your lantern under a thin layer of canvas you contemplate your situation, the loneliest man in the world, although there’s something freeing about being disconnected by nature from civilisation, to be alone. From the dark, at a distance of which any creature would have made its presence known, a voice , horse and deep echos iut “ *Come. Here* “ it sounds forced, unnatural. You will not make it back home.
