The effect used on this particular version is called "vocoder", which is a synth that functions as a filter. It is fed by any audio source, in thes case, Alice's microphone. In the record version I think there are just random samples uploaded into a sequencer and then played as notes. Great song, great band, great XXI century diva.

But just generally speaking when someone leaves an ultra succesful band because that person is feeling abused, then yeah maybe there is something to their motives.
