Is it true that the 3p resonators won't need capacitors in series with them (the ones that usually came with the value of 22pF) Because, I've seen a lot of microcontroller schematics that uses those 3p resonators, but doesn't use 2x 22pF capacitors...

Two noob questions if someone would kind enough to answer, pls & ty.... 1. If you always have to essentially convert the hertz to seconds, why is that particular speed so special or any easier to use, just because it evenly divides down to a whole number 1? 2. Why cant they just manufacturer 1hz crystal, save everyone a lot of work?
@dtpc_technologies
@dtpc_technologies 5 жыл бұрын
The answer is pretty simple. Let's suppose that while measuring time, there is always an error of 0.05Hz which can be machine error, human error or any type of an unavoidable error (since we don't live in an ideal world). Case 1: Now if we try to make a crystal of 1Hz, the worst-case scenario will be that we might end up making a crystal of 1.05Hz. Now while measuring time, this error will get added up with each clock tick. So after 1000s, the calculated time will be 952s with such a crystal. The situation will get worse as time passes by. Case 2: Now if we make a crystal of 32767Hz, the worst-case scenario will be that we might end up making a crystal of 32767.05Hz. When we divide this value by (2^15) using 15 flip flops, we'll get a net value of 1.0000015Hz. On measuring 1000s with such a crystal the measured time will be 999.9985s. Which case seems more accurate?

@@dtpc_technologies then why dont put 1GHz to watch and few more flipflops.... this will produce much more precision
@dtpc_technologies
@dtpc_technologies 5 жыл бұрын
@@hardxor Ever tried cutting vegetables with a sword? It's not only about the number of flip flops. At such a high frequency, we have to use components that can actually handle such a high frequency. This will also reduce the battery life and will have other negative effects too. Will you pay 25 times the price for a watch with 10% battery life and almost the same precision?
@guytech7310
@guytech7310 5 жыл бұрын
Issue is size. A 1 Hz Crystal would be quite large and too big to use in a watch. The crystal size and shape determines it resonant frequency, just the the length of a pendulum. The shorter the pendulum the faster it oscillates.

@marcodev3375 5 жыл бұрын
How about atomic clock? Is it use a crystal too?
@guytech7310
@guytech7310 5 жыл бұрын
No an atomic part uses the resonance of atoms like Cesium or Rubidium. I believe these use a microwave cavity to set up the oscillations. Another (newish tech) resonator is MEMS (Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems). These are more stable over a wider temperature ranges, as quartz need to be temperature stabilized to remain accurate (ie Oven Crystal Oscillators OXCO).

The only thing that is missing in this video is that you can (up to some range) check if crystals are working, using multimeter, by placing black probe to gnd, and red probe to one of contacts of resonator, multimeter should show frequency while device/pcb is turned ON. Not everyone has oscilloscope at home.
