Crystal Lye is a very powerful chemical and is used in a variety of items including making drain openers. Today I'm going to show the chemical reaction it causes with aluminum foil.

Wow, that chemical reaction was fun to watch! It is amazing how black the water and Lye mixture on the bottom got! Thank your for the awesome video! 💥🔥🌟😎

Thank to this, I was wondering with my LYE turn gray when I dissolved my caustic soda to water. So this is the answer. Never use aluminum container when dissolving Sodium hydroxide into the water.

Same for potassium hydroxide except then the waste is aluminum hydroxide and that is what is used in heart burn meds

If you were to put aluminum foil and crystal lye drain opener in a water bottle and screw the cap on the water bottle afterwards would it create a very loud explosion.

I’m surprised the heat being produced from the reaction isn’t melting the plastic cup.

It depends on the plastic. Recycle Codes #2 and #5 plastics are safe to mix lye in.

Very awesome tutorial. How does one dispose of it after the experiment is over?
@BrianBaxterScience

Thank you Susie! You have to take it to your local Hazardous Waste Management facility for disposal.

@@BrianBaxterScience There's no easy way to recover the aluminium from the lye?
@Palmit_
@Palmit_ Жыл бұрын
@@mitchellquinn there is, ...probably.? lye is hygroscopic. it reacts with water. it's base alkaline. . aluminium reacts with acid. .. i guess GUESS .. dump a bunch of Bicarbonate of Soda in the mixture and the two different materials will separate out. it's guesswork on my part.

Lye is extreme alkaline so my theory would be to carefully add an acid to make the solution more neutral. I havent tried this though and would be very interested to know if it works

Can u give me any info, I had lime away a gallon jug of it leak into another container that I had stored in, I had it in a secondary container in case that stuff would leak and it did in my closet and it left the white dust like substance and it corroded my metal hangers and things there was also like a bottle of crystal drain cleaner sitting right next to it and that turn to liquid any idea what happened there I mean did that lime-away turn that Crystal drain cleaner to liquid and is there a chemical reaction that should be concerned about for health, any information would be greatly appreciated also I want to know if that dust is hazardous that was left behind, wipe down the walls in the shelves and wash all the clothes and blankets that are in that closet now

Omg yeah that sounds like a very hazardous mess. I would definitely get that cleaned up and any items effected cleaned or thrown away safely. Be sure to wear gloves and a chemical face mask if you have access to one. I would contact your local Hazardous Waste Management Center also and ask them what is the best method for disposing of the residue, hangers, covers, clothing or anything else that has been ruined by the leak. It's definitely not safe to have any of that powder substance existing in your home. Thanks for your question and I hope my advice has helped you. Be safe. I would also dispose of the crystal drain cleaner that was effected also just in case.

More specifically borosilicate glass. One time I was reacting sulfuric acid and powdered sugar in a large, regular glass container and as it exothermically reacted and got very hot, the glass shattered and sulfuric acid went all over the place in my kitchen. I will never use regular glass again for chemical reactions. Only borosilicate.

We used to take toilet bowl cleaner the works and put a couple of bals of aluminum foil in it a drop or two of dowl cleaner and shake our neighbors windows.. what happened to Auto Correct for moron's like mewho smashes every phone and i can hardly see what I'm writing.. yeah i took some of that lsame shut you got there and put it in a Gatorade bottle and good thing i was quick that woukd take your arm off...
