That was a time when Bert Head bought any player that could kick a ball. He did buy the best player I have seen in a Palace shirt - Don Rogers. I don't think I have seen a player so fast over the initial 10 yards. He was lightning. Great game, great day.

He also had a chance to sign Kevin Keegan from Stockport but said Keven wouldn't be good enough 😂

I was there that day. We were abysmal and Palace were superb. O'Farrell was sacked after this game and Tommy Docherty, who was, I believe, at the game, appointed. We avoided relegation that season but ended up going down in 1974. It was always a good atmosphere at Selhurst Park and still is compared to a lot of grounds.
@gailbrocksom4333 жыл бұрын
Great to see this now through the prism of almost 50 years, hard to take on the day but it led to The Docs appointment and the clearing out of all the past it footballers and the building of a vibrant young team. Its comforting to know that the seeds of future victories are in defeat, the reverse is also true of course.

I've been following a few book and magazine reviews over on the Andrew Buckle Book Reviews channel just lately - 'Holly Jolly', 'Look and Learn and Ranger' and 'Record Mirror' - and I have encountered a couple of childhood photos on his Flickr, variously with his mum and dad, wearing a Palace shirt of this vintage, so that's why I'm here. What a performance this was! Although I am an adoptive 'Derbyshire Canary' I still feel a bit of a soft spot for Palace through their promotion, in 1968-9, along with my home city club as it began its glory years of that time. Back in the Nineties I went to Selhurst Park, but in its guise as Wimbledon's home ground, following the Canaries in the capital, so I can say that I have been here.

@martinmitchell33962 жыл бұрын
I was there! Six years old and the first time I'd seen my beloved Man U. What an abject defeat, it compares with some of the Man U performances of the season just finished. George Best didn't turn up, Bobby Charlton got injured before the game and Man U played with 10 men for 15 mins because Frank O'Farrell (out of his depth)hesitated over the substitution. Whittle, Rogers and Hughes weren't regular top flight players but looked like world-beaters. In the stand Matt Busby offered the Doc O'Farrell's job (he accepted). Funny thing is I have a clear memory of Big Mal being the Palace manager for this game, people in the crowd were definitely talking about him. Maybe he had been appointed but had not taken up the position.

Don Rogers and Whittle. Not a Palace fan but it was a fun time to watch footie as a young lad then. These days Rogers and Whittle would have pundits raving with superlatives. Back then it was just a good football.

Another super underrated English footballer. He scored for Swindon in the League Cup to beat Man City but was continually overlooked. Very quick, lovely control, able to beat players and a terrific shot. Basically he was a very classy footballer. And like many similar players totally unsung for some unknown reason. We forget that the 70s was a brutal and quite cynical era for the game. Players like Rogers, who had to retire early, and Keith Weller, another underrated artist were kicked out of many games.

That's right.Check out Whittle's goal in the Liverpool derby of 1970. Search "Everton 1970". When Everton won the league in 69/70 Whittle was expected to become one of the greatest Everton players of all time. But both he and that Everton side strangely never fulfilled their potential.

Don Rogers, another reason why England were so shit in the 70s and qualified for nothing. Left the best players out from unfashionable clubs and chose rubbish.
@myshkin7116 жыл бұрын
Wow! Obviously every player was a hero for Palace, but that's as good a one man show as I think I've ever seen that Don Rodgers put on that afternoon; he controlled the game like Johann Cruyff. Did he ever get an England cap?
@myroseaccount Жыл бұрын
Classy technically adept footballers like Rogers were never really valued in English football. There is a long list of superb players from every era of the game like Rogers, many overlooked by 1st division clubs, and even more never considered for England. Perhaps the most extreme example, and mostly unknown by most people, would be Peter Broadbent. He was the best and incredibly technically gifted footballer in the Wolves team that dominated the 1950s. He was George Best's favourite ever player, and no less than the great John Charles felt Broadbent was the most gifted English footballer he had ever seen. Broadbent played 6 times for England
