This is my favorite side of any Zeppelin album ever! I think this really cemented Led Zeppelin's musical identity more than anything else (that and the Live shows I've seen on DVD). The End of Heartbreaker flows right into Livin' Livin' Maid so well. It's almost like the band is taking a pause between one long song or a medley. Ramble On is a good change of pace. It still rocks but has a stronger melody. John Bonham gets his own drum solo-song on Moby Dick! Bring It On Home reminds us how blues based the band really is. Nice way to end the album here, imo.

Wow that was excellently and beautiful put, both by LZ & YOU!!! Spectacular way of listing out the events that took place! This is an excellent choice for a favorite LZ side! Yes the flowing from one song to the next allowed for this certain level of intrigue to take place and that drum solo really was something special! I feel fortunate to even have been able to listen to it!

Another amazing video, Crystal! Not only are you a wonderful soul, but your videos are like a graduate course in classic rock music appreciation. I always find some new perspective of albums I've heard a gazillion times from your videos, like a deep dive that gives me a new appreciation for the music. I love revisiting these albums with new ears, so to speak, and love your reactions. As for Zep, my favorite Zep song overall is probably Since I've Been Loving You, and my favorite album by them is Led Zeppelin IV. This is also a great one, and my favorite song on this one is probably Ramble On. So glad you're back making videos!

Crystal! So stoked to see you back on the Led Zeppelin train. “Heartbreaker”/“Living, Loving Woman” is my favorite track and I love the seamless segue. The classic rock of the 1970s is really distinguished by guitar riffs. It truly is a gift that musicians have and Jimmy Page has a knack for coming up with incendiary riffs. Playing guitar is really hard, but I think passion goes a long way and if you have that, you’ll be one step ahead. It’s different from piano because the physics of the instruments are different. However, I have a hunch that you will be a natural on guitar, Crystal. “Ramble On” is one of my favorites, too. Love the blend of the acoustic and electric guitars. That chorus is so catchy and a total ear worm. Plant sings like a man with his hair on fire and can go from low to high notes effortlessly. “Moby Dick”-What a whale of a song (pun intended! Ha!) Bonham is simply one of the best and 5 generations of drummers have been paying homage to him trying to replicate his sound. Personally, Ringo is my favorite drummer, but Bonham is one of the best. I really think you will love Keith Moon, too, once you get to The Who. “Bring It On Home”-Bluesy rock. It’s sorely missing from modern music, at least on the radio. I noticed that Zeppelin often likes to play songs in the same key (A and E). It could be because of Plant’s vocal range. Dunno. But what a delightful experience! 👍👍

Hi Crystal, as I've said in an earlier post or two, I really like how you insightfully relate elements of one group or song with those of another (Like hearing The Beatles in Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd in The Beatles, Black Sabbath in "Happy Birthday." Er, OK, um, maybe not that last one, but you see what I'm saying). As usual, your presentation was rewarding in many ways. Obviously there's your captivating countenance and pleasant manner, but, good grief, girl, your powers of perception, interpretive intelligence, and skills to translate what you've heard to us are unmatched by--I think I can say this--any other reactor I've seen! And the fun you bring to "the job" as well is appreciated! Your whimsical asides, like serving up a bit of onomatopoeia when you slowed yourself down to intone "gelatinous," are the rainbow sprinkles on the ice cream. I got a lot out of your Heartbreaker analysis. I've listened to this 1000 times, but never thought of it in that slow/plodding, then solo interlude, then squeezed-out-SPEED way you pointed out. I mean I have, but I was just digging the DRAMA of it, not so much noticing the structure. Not enough room, really, for more appreciation of your review (Crystal: Oh, no--take ALL the room you need!) here, but I will say that I *probably* like Side One of this album best, "Physical Graffiti" is my fave album from Zeppelin, which is my favorite group--and I must say that you have the most expressive right index finger I have ever seen, lol! The way you sort of "conduct" the music with it, as it soars upwards, twirls here, jabs there, and so on. OK, admittedly a bit of an odd observation, and it's time for me to end this anyhow, lol. Cheers!

In the early 70s 'The Lord of the Rings' was a very hippy, underground, word of mouth book. Not many people read it and it was a sort of badge of honour to have read it. It was far from the mainstream franchise it is now!

The Lord of the Rings is one of my childhood favorites actually, but even I'll admit that it takes 250 pages to really get going. Before the movies, people would just give up on it. (For the record, I first read it in the 1980s, not the 1970s, but my memory is similar to what you're saying. Most people didn't really know what the books were about and how good they were. I can't tell you how many people told me, "Oh, I read a few chapters of that. But it was boring.")

Wow thank you for sharing this bit of trivia about LOTR with me! I had no idea it was ever underground, when I came into this world it was already in full swing! And if I am being completely honest never read the books but I have watched the movies! My mom is a big fan and so was my dad! I can remember that my very first existential crisis was at the movie theatres watching one of them as my parents explained that the elves live forever. That for me thinking of the concept of Earth being around forever. And then we’re do the humans that pass on go to. Then the fact that one day I will pass on. But the question of where I was before this life and why can’t I remember and what’s outside of forever and what does forever even mean and if it forever ends what’s after! And that was the first time I had those feelings that still come into play all the time until this day lol!!! It would have been funny if I was doing reactions back then and you could see a 4 year old Crystal having these realizations for the first time at a LOTR movie hahaha!

@@CrystalMarieShannon That would have been amazing!! I read "The Hobbit" and then the LOTR books starting in the late 70's and enjoyed the story so much. Tolkien's writing can get a bit wordy and descriptive sometimes, so I can see why some gave it up, but his world, characters and stories were so compelling that I am pleased I never gave up on them. From there it was off to many more great fantasy works over the years, but Tolkien was always the first for me.

Thanks for putting in the work on these! I've really been looking forward to seeing your reaction to this. The whole album is amazing but side 2 is crazy brilliant. Ramble On is a top 5 LZ song for me (and that's saying something as they legit have like 50 awesome songs). The walking base line by John Paul Jones is iconic. Yes they reference Lord of the Rings in Ramble On (and a couple of other songs in later albums, but it's more subtle). They were big LOTR fans (it was only the books back then of course). Lastly... Me when I first heard your "numero cuatro" theory: "eh, maybe." Me when I realize what some of the "numero cuatros" are on Led Zeppelin 3 & 4 : "oh my."

I love this album, always been one of my favorites, from "Heartbreaker", To Willie Dixon "Bring it on home", this album was successful reaching the top billboard charts and is one of my, if not favorite albums growing up, I love the whole album, gotta say that "Ramble On", is one of my top songs cause of the image Lord Of The Rings, couldn't stop reading those books in junior high school and then to hear it on a Led Zep song was so cool ,so many great songs, Thank you so much Crystal!

Many nights listening to Zep on the floor at friends' house (both drummers), lights down, amp up - their mother very tolerant of us teenagers. Thinking of them, checked my LPs, only 1 album in box. But reminded me of Page in the Yardbirds & Jeff Beck with him & before him Clapton as well. Thought I had album but do have 4 45s, For Your Love (photo jacket but I don't recognize anyone; all very young & clean cut); Heart Full of Soul; Shapes of Things; Over Under Sideways Down. Harmonicas, sitar, tabla, harpsichord (Manfred Mann). I think you will like these

A fantastic album. Thanks for your reaction. Led Zeppelin II is in my top 3 for them along with Physical Graffiti and Presence. The first album was mostly them putting their stamp on playing the blues, with dash of traditional folk. This one showcases their ability to rock the blues. I like Ramble On, Lemon Song and Heartbreaker the best. My mother was looking after our oldest (he is now 28) when he was about 2 and he was humming the riff to Heartbreaker while he played with his toy dinosaurs....she said "are you ever your father's child, he drove me nuts with that song. "

Physical Graffiti is the most balanced, well-produced, and majestic album of Zeppelin's career. There's not a skippable song in the collection and it still holds up to this day. I honestly can't wait to see your reaction/analysis.

Agreed! I just mentioned that in my comment above, that PG is my fave Zep album. Which is almost kinda "cheating," as it IS a double album, but it really DOES show the musical spectrum that they strode--uncompromisingly, seemingly effortlessly, always adventurously--through. From the bone-crunching blues-dipped metal of "In My Time of Dying," to the trippy sound of Jonesy's synth organ sounding like the call of seagulls on an autumn beach on "In The Light," to the acoustic soul caress of "Bron-Yr-Aur," to--well, you know what I'm talkin' about, lol! I can't wait till *Crystal* talks about it and teaches me something on her FIRST damn listen that I still haven't realized after my 1000th, lol!

This album is definitely my favorite, hands down. So many epic moments, and such an overall masterful balance. But songs like "Ramble On" elevate Zeppelin from a great rock band to a legendary one, introducing some different textures that break the rock mold as well as contributing some mystique.

Howdy!!!!!!!! clicked on this in less than a nano-second :-) The songs (especially Ramble On) are wonderful on this side BUT, I don't think there is a "story" or a thread in their sequence.... So, I have to go with Side 1 ANYWAY, I can't wait 'til you have listened to all their albums and we can REALLY start talking about favorites. Regardless, I'll benevolently give you a little foreshadowing: You are going to love III -- now please do it soon!!!! :-)

Excellent! Me and my friends played this album to death in high school. Brings back fun memories. “Ramble On” is sublime, one of their best tunes-love the opening acoustic guitar and John Paul Jones’ rollicking bass line…als, I personally much enjoy their version of “Bring it on Home,” Robert Plant’s vocals sound so different there (same with “Hats off to Roy Harper” on Led Zep III). I always chuckle thinking of that scene in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive with the original version playing (kind of a weird, comical scene)…

If you continue your Led Zep journey, the next album III has a lot more acoustic songs, shows their folky side…ranging from warm and melancholic (“That’s the Way”) to upbeat and fun (“Bron-Y- Aur Stomp”) to ominous (“Gallows Pole”)…quite a ride!!

When Led Zeppelin 2 was released I was about 12 years old!! I was just beginning to discover music of my own that I liked rather than listening to AM radio!! I actually purchased the Led Zeppelin 2 cassette version from the Columbia house where you used to be able to order 10 cassette tapes for a penny!! So I quickly fell in love with Led Zeppelin after hearing this entire album! I can't say I have a favorite song I really love the whole thing!! It made me anxious for their third album to be released and it made me go back and purchase their first album and listen to the very beginning!! For me personally the first five albums are the ones that I enjoy the most!! Mostly because once John Bonham passed away, Led Zeppelin could and would never be the same!! But this early Zeppelin is where it's at for me!!

Another great one! Aside about Bring It On Home - the beginning is an homage to Sonny Boy Williamson, a blues harmonica player and singer from the 50s/60s, and he wrote that first part; his version of the song sounds like this throughout, but with bass and drums. You should listen to it just to compare the two! The second part of it is all Zeppelin. I love "Ramble On" and also "Thank You" on the first side, but I think this is one of their best records.

Robert Plant wrote a lot of lyrics mentioning characters and places from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings string of books. Here as you identified, he mentions Gollum and Mordor. The song Misty Mountain Hop is a reference to the Misty Mountains in the books although the song does not relate with anything in the story. The song that does is The Battle of Evermore (from their 4th album) which I've read is a poetic description of the hours prior to The Battle of the Pelennor Fields, chapter six of The Return of the King. BTW, the female voice you hear in the call and response section of The Battle of Evermore is none other then the late great Sandy Duncan who made her mark in the sixties and early seventies, most notably in her tenure with the band Fairport Convention.

Zepp III -- which was more critically panned than any of their other lps -- is my personal fav... I bring it up now, cuz it has many more "Ramble On"-like songs (the more mystical/folk vibes) than any other Zepp album, though Zepp IV also has its share. Indeed, you have a lot to look fwd to Crystal!

Crystal, it is such a joy to see someone younger experience this amazing musical artistry that I have always loved. Don't stop!!! PS. If I may, here are some rock groups, totally different from each other, but in their own way showed their genius: - Black Sabbath - Cream - Crosby, Stills and Nash - Deep Purple - The Doors - The Rolling Stones

Led Zep II is my favourite album from them, they took what worked from their first album and they kick it up a notch. It’s still raw, but that’s what’s great about it, it’s hard rock in it’s most brutal form and that’s what Led Zeppelin did the best. They have more refined follow up albums with more beautiful and intricate songs, but that’s peak hard rock energy.

I have the same problem with Physical Graffiti that I do with IV. I’ve just listened to it too many damn times, over and over. In Through the Out Door has some really good songs and is good overall. Of the first three albums, I don’t have a fave, I just keep going back to them. I really like the Peel Sessions as well, for a slightly looser take. One thing no one ever mentions about LED Zeppelin is: so many songs about fucking! Is this good or bad? I guess it depends on one’s mood.
