That option of blending another distortion pedal in tho.... yeeow

I think my ideal use case would be to put something like a Tube Screamer in the blend loop - going into the crunchy Marshall amp. That way you can blend between the amp being boosted by the TS or the HM2 side.

Still have my 1980's version and the brass plaque stating it was the 3 millionth unit ever made. I used mine for classic rock, not metal, so it's all down to your settings. BTW, I was using it during a gig in Bogiez in Cardiff and Phil Campbell out of Motorhead, asked me how I got my sound, so it couldn't have been that bad lol

I've kind of been blending an HM-2 for almost the entire time I've been using one, by which I mean that I run one into a Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive with the balance knob dialed to give me mostly HM-2 into the overdriven amp but some of the Overdrive, turned right down, too. This sort of gets a boosted amp tone and gnarly grind at the same time.

And suddenly I need to add a metal band to my current line-up of gigs, including surf-ska-cumbia, big band swing, metal-ska, and various pick-up tribute bands in the alt-rock/AOR vein. I need a good pedal first, unless the Katana version of the HM2 (if its even in there) is half this versatile. It definitely has more controls than the actual stomp box...
@countk1
@countk1 11 ай бұрын
"not to shag my own *rse or anything" made me chuckle longer then expected. Scottish is the best accent english has to offer imho 😁 HM-2 all the way btw. Got one of the last versions and I will never get rid of it. I was there in '91, seeing it all happen and it was the start of the best period of death metal imho. And finally a new pedal that got this right as well! Ok, there are features that are obsolete imho (that's personal of courset), but this pedal sounds pretty good. I wonder how it sounds with a bit of power amp distortion, which was also a feature of the Stockholm sound (and made the feedback even worse). I always used the Noise gate of a Boss GX700 before going to my JCM800. These days I use a setup of the HM-2 (all open except distortion at about 10% to get a more mellow late Dismember sound), a 19" rack version of the Mesa Boogie V-twin (OD at 3), a Marshall 9200 (EL34) and a Marshall 1960B cab (GT12-75's). The only hting is that you need to turn the power amp up high enough to get the speakers to move a bit for a decent sound. The HM-2 can cause a sound to be very thin if you don't ramp it up a bit. Never heard the bull mastiff next door bark anymore after I did try that at home. I am looking for a decent pedal to put straight into my DAW so I can fiddle with the other aspects after recording. An HM-2 is not really suitable for that but this pedal might do the trick as it has a built in noise suppressor and sounds pretty clean without compromising too much in the "chainsaw" aspect of the sound. At the Gates used a HM-2 with a Metal Zone btw. In Flames used an OD (I think?) with a Metal Zone on a 5150. So HM-2 almost purely formed the Stockholm sound on differnt types of amps. While it was still present in the Gothernburg sound but the main "driver" was mostly a Metal Zone there. Guitarists were experimenting so much these days that 3 (potential) feedback generators in one setup was not considered too much of a thing. It gave us quite some unique sounds though. Love your version of this song. You go, girl 🙃
@lichtlaermaudio
@lichtlaermaudio 11 ай бұрын
There’s a lot of great statements in this comment! The thing is: for the classic sound the added features may be unnecessary but there’s a lot of sounds this is capable of that the original could not do (on its own) and we wanted to make this an option for more than just one sound - which it still does as well.
@countk1
@countk1 11 ай бұрын
YW :) I feel ya. The HM-2 is kind of limited on that field. But that is all I would buy it for. It doesn't mean I won't check the alternative settings out or mess around with the loop tho :) Always curious :) I checked a few pedals out myself but they always seemed a bit off imho. I think this one actually boosts in the Freq section? I also think the presence is a good idea. @@lichtlaermaudio EDIT: Been wandering the internet a bit and must say the "modern" setting kind of resembles my V-Twin mid boosted lead channel... ish. So definetely interested

Dude, I like you so much for your style and character since the start of your channel but I kinda don´t get the humble brag at the start of the video... I mean... With all respect, I know very small KZbinrs as well as pedal builders personally who produced HM-2 content with in depth knowledge I not even remotely saw from you in your videos. The oscilloscope is fancy but yet, just a gimmic in the end. I watched the whole video and then the start again to check if that´s a joke I don´t get but "People tend to listen to what I got so say", oof...
@ScienceofLoud
@ScienceofLoud 11 ай бұрын
And yet here you are listening to me. I've covered the HM-2 so many times at this point that it doesn't make sense to go over the same ground each time. I have the in-depth circuit analysis video already, which I'd recommend watching. Every other HM2 video assumes you've watched that to save time. If you have, then you'll know how to extract the relevant data from the oscilloscope traces shown here - ultimately, they are just to prove that the Medusa can get the classic sound, and show the basic difference in distortion and EQ between the pedal's two modes. I condense information to allow viewers to get the essential information as quickly as possible. Everything one needs to know is in here, but in a concise fashion that does not waste time labouring every last detail.

Boss themselves only provided Colin the first HM-2w to review a few years back. And he’s gone over the circuit is pretty extensive detail a ton of times. But yeah what does he know. Can’t imagine there’s a reason Boss went to Colin to help launch that pedal instead of your alleged friends, I’m sure it’s because they’re just idiots.

If it only costs $20 to make one, then why don't you do it yourself? Remember to factor in your time spent in R&D, prototyping, building the retail units, commissioning artwork, marketing, upkeep of the website, boxing and shipping the pedal, and the rent/electricity on your place of work. I'm sure you'll manage to do all of that for just $20 a unit.
