CSHL in its very core is highly focused on biological mechanisms. More on the how than the what. MPI for Evolutionary Anthropology is not really equipped to further drill down biological mechanisms in experimental models rather only focused on straightforward genomics and anthropology. This is really apparent in how Svante answered the questions at the end, almost always speculations or clueless. I understand the extreme difficulty of archaic genomics, but I sure hoped that Svante would have been a little more well-read in the literature on some of the implications his findings presented. Gene functions, orthologous functions in other organisms, who are the leading groups working on them, etc. He could have pointed out at least the references instead of ending his answers with "I don't know".

I recently read his book on neanderthal genomes and loved it, this keynote had me on the edge of my seat, partly due to my overwhelming interest in human evolution, and partly to have my american ears better understand his accent :)

I'm sure this is an important and interesting presentation. Unfortunately the library cannot afford an adequate sound system.
