This man is able to articulate complex thought into everyday language. His words are true and timeless.... he is truly "woke" unlike the fools that rampage through our civilization declaring they want "social justice". God help them!

You of such abundance of naivety. Your comment is mind numbingly painful and self riotous. You are not worthy to categorise this great man, let alone 'woke'. For you pitiful few hear one paragraph that fits the ignorant wokeness narrative. The arrogant assumption that the creator of those words is woke are nothing but egotistic, Narcissus type comments

@@1Lord.J.C He placed *woke* in quotations for a reason. Today "woke" means that you are "up to date" or on que with the social norm. I think what the OC was saying was that Lewis was way ahead of others in his understanding of the subject, or was simply on point with understanding it; and that he would not be accepted by those today who seek "truth."

I've never been accused of being overly intelligent, but I had an idea while backpacking near Mt Ranier. It was so stunningly beautiful. Even groaning, under the curse. How amazing is Heaven? Perfect, incorruptible, holy. I bet our new bodies have senses we can't comprehend now. See Jesus? The reality of it is awesome.

I always enjoy listening to C.S.Lewis. What a treasure, thank you for sharing these! In this case however I think mr. Lewis took the word 'generation' as used by Lord Jesus too literally perhaps. Which is human! As I have come to understand the word 'generation' was not meant to be taken as a literal generation of people who were alive at that specific time when Jesus spoke those words. I believe Jesus meant it within the context of a period or age. The Hebrew 'dor' stands for : period, dwelling, generation. We are still in that age, at the end of it I would expect although I could be wrong ofcourse. This age passes only at the coming of the new age, when He (Yeshua) Himself arrives as the King. God is not on a human timetable and I would expect Jesus to have used words which transcend their literal meaning in cases such as in matthew 24:34. He did not know the exact time of the greatest happening, just as He said, but He did not make any mistake in what He did say. he knew, but we often don't until we learn or until knowledge is revealed to us.

In his children's book, "The Last Battle" the stars fell to the ground. This is a key for me and speaks to the end of the world as seen in visionary allegory. The second coming is like all the stars falling to the ground before our eyes. And speaking of non scriptural thoughts about this second coming, what the ego/mind sees as total catastrophe the soul/mind might see as liberation, and while the stars might be a metaphor for nuclear bombs on the head of missiles, it could be literal as well as when the sky is torn open for all seeing to no longer believe but to know. Beyond time and space is beyond me and my words I think Lewis is my new Best Friend

In Romans 8:19-23 the Bible reminds us that the world is currently in bondage to decay and eagerly awaiting the days for the sons of God to be revealed. In 2 Peter and Revelation 21 we read about the earth having been remade. Acts 3:21 reminds us that the time is coming for the restoration of all things.

I like the book as a stepping up point for children and your analogy of stars as bombs...possiblabilities...recognition of a saviors return in the clouds I always prayed would precede this. I never speculate but like Mr. Lewis understand I do not know or will not know the day or the hour of the returning of my savior. You make an enjoyable underline in your feelings towards his work in a children's book.

When we have entirely died to the lust of the eyes and flesh and pride of life, and handed ourselves over to God's perfect will for our lives, we truly begin to live, to be filled with the 9-fold fruit of the Holy Spirit, always loving, joyful, peaceful, longsuffering, gentle, good, faithful, meek, and in self- control. Unless we do so we are charlatans and there is no truth in us.

I love CS Lewis. I've read many of his books and I admire him greatly but he wasn't always right. He said that Jesus was wrong about that generation not passing away until they saw the second coming. I'm paraphrasing. They saw it in a snapshot on the mount of transfiguration when they saw him with Moses and Elijah. These two represent not only the law and the prophets but also the two classes of people who will be with Jesus in the end. Those who have died and been resurrected ie Moses and those who will be taken to heaven without seeing death or Elijah. The saved I'm talking about. I will always be grateful to CS Lewis bit on this point he was wrong.

Be cause the generation was extended a bit where Jesus was seen with moses and a few and may be he all ready knew this small short generation. that happened then be for over with in history and it does not say then we shall see every thing and remembering becoming real life . we need to see the Bible Jesus generations of 1 or 2 3 Happened and history with nothing really efecting us for its pass history happened? it would be to much now as human to have a clue of what it means. He is man C.S and so are you and i . not mentioned by him for it can go on long in to full context. you and i in our life way's have done ways like this more than we know? yet we dare Correct this guy? i am not being a hypocritical and niether are you but yet we all are one. Yes this guy is great but this time shall pass two for it all way's does with out our control. Science has this little problem of Control as an ant controling some thing larger than Godzila but have not come to see but only his eyes see materially and only will except any thing else with proof . Science can't actually except the fact that everything they can't see is not real or aparent when reason and spirit explains better than what we see for evidence because it gives us when we let its awareness of power we hope and this time two shall pass we all live our short comings. ✌

F.Y.I.: The lion is, and, in my opinion, a very awe striking one at that (because of the great and beautiful nobility of it), a reference to Aslan from C.S. Lewis's only children's series he wrote: "The Chronicles of Narnia". I recommend you read it if you haven't already (The movies are pretty good too), in spite of it's intended audience. I also highly recommend, what in my opinion seems to very nearly be a science fiction version of The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis's: "The Space Trilogy".

What Jesus means by "This Generation" does not necessarily need be what we think of as a "generation;" in fact, it can't be or our faith is already in vain. Consider "Generation" as an "Age" of undeterminable periods. Moreover, "soon" by its very nature is a relative term. Remain diligent before the "Gate" Brothers and Sisters. Keep your lamps full; for the Bridegroom shall return for his wedding day.

Good analysis. I noticed Jewish logic/composition includes the beginning and the end. Therefore they are masters of mathematics. Jesus could be referring to finding the truth of God in the disciple's time. The tree showing the change of its leaves with the seasons parable. Thr disciples plee for more plain language, but Jesus rebuking them since they dont appreciate something simple. The parable of the farmer and the seeds. God meets us in asking for truth. Kinda spooky concept. However to an omnipresent being, nothing is impossible. Jesus uses language perfectly. Shifting the intent of the heart with a question. Brilliant teaching. So I partially disagree with Lewis saying the generation wont pass away before the coming being an embarrassing passage. The meaning is hidden til the appointed time. If there is concern for my logic. Refer to jewish riddle traditions. It bends the mind how clever they word things.

History from a Biblical perspective is events playing out as a shadow of the main story of redemption, over and over again. Consider the history of Judges and the periods of exile, to the yearly liturgy of the Jews, all mirror THE Redemption story. The same mirroring is for Act 2 of THE Redemption story. Matthew 24:22 "And if those days had not been cut short [none] would be saves. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short". The change in tenses from past to future, along with this 'cutting short' speaks to this cycle of tribulation. Also consider the proximity difference in "THESE things" vs "but THAT day" signifying two events one near and one far off. The destruction of the temple was in that generation. No reason stretch the meaning of a word to interpret this passage. The mystery of Christ being Fully God and Fully man is beyond anyone's understanding, as is the distinct yet unity of the Trinity. I would disagree with the how it seems C.S. Lewis framed this passage.

Agreed. A generation or age, in relation to the entirety of the time since Adam and Eve, can mean the age or generation of Christianity, the age with the unique blessing of the direct knowledge of Christ, of God's plan, of seeing the mercy of God. The generation with no remaining excuse as to claim to not understand God's will for us. A generation and those progeny, with the completely unique blessing who's ancestors literally walked with God and wrote down in great detail what Christ so desperately wants us to know how much we are loved and what responsibility that now obliges us in response.

You're all wrong and so was Lewis. Jesus reacted to the disciples' awe at Herod's temple by prophesying it's destruction. They then ask "when" and "what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?" (aion, not cosmos) He responds by describing the events that lead up to A.D. 66-70 including the siege and fall of Jerusalem and the diaspora of the Jews, warning that these events would occur before the current generation died out, and summing it up by saying: "For these are the days of wrath and vengeance upon *this people* , in which all that is written shall be *fulfilled* ." And that includes his "parousia ", His presence or visitation, as the instigator of the judgement that befell the apostate nation. So the"end" already came, and it was the end of national Israel under the old Covenant. Because Biblical prophecy was written to, by and about the Jews; and concerns their fate as a people and as people of God. Which fate was sealed in A D. 70. What confuses people is the "heavenly signs" language and the Lord "coming upon the clouds" language. The first is used repeatedly by prophets to depict various past judgements. Isaiah used it to predict the fall of Babylon. It was METAPHOR. The sun, moon and stars going out or falling down are the king, queen, princes, ministers etc. of the place under judgement being killed or thrown out of power. The earth quaking and shaking is the land itself being thrown into chaos. Both are the results of foreign invasion. The Lord "riding the clouds" is common imagery depicting God coming in war or judgement against His enemies and to rescue his friends. David described his escape from Saul's attempts to assassinate him in these terms, but it was poetic license. God didn't actually jump on a cloud or ride cherubim and attack Saul with heavenly fire...David dodged a javelin and hid in cave. It's hyperbole designed to exalt God. Same with Jesus and his coming upon the clouds. It's not a literal visual phenomenon. So JESUS WAS RIGHT when he said he would come back in the first century. And he told you exactly how to recognize it. But like his first coming, almost no one does.

@@nunyabidness5375 thank you for sharing the very well laid out events following Christs resurrection. And yes, I think we all accept that some of what Christ said was imagery which was commonly used because there was no other way to describe certain events or actions in a way understandable to people with our very material and physical thinking. But the references to stars falling from heaven, again clearly imagery, was referencing the END times, not the fall of Jerusalem. Christ made it clear that the Church would have to spread to the entire world before that happened and that was not hardly begun at 70 AD. So Revelation was speaking of a totally different time, at the end of all history, and the imagery makes it clear in Revelation that this coming would be the end of this world and a "New Jerusalem" would come to be, which was not a rebuilding of the Temple, which to date has not happened, but a very different kind of city that had no Temple because God Himself would be the Temple. So this is clearly not relating to the fall of Jerusalem. But the rest of what you laid out is all very well done and does act as a warning by Jesus that all the things they admired so much would be torn down. And His urging of the women on the way to the cross "Weep not for me, but for yourselves and your children" which was a much more imminent event, as you said, the destruction of Jerusalem and the horrible carnage, all in their lifetimes. As for clouds and cherubim we should not get stuck in our limited earthly thinking. God and the Trinity can do anything They choose! I have heard people try to explain the multiplication of the fish and loaves as "well, what probably actually happened was people just shared what they had". Limited thinking when we consider that through Jesus ALL THINGS CAME INTO BEING!!! Jesus could do whatever He wanted with anything from calming the sees, to healing His creatures, to manipulating simple food. So we are not in any position to say Jesus cannot ride a cloud if He chooses. If he can walk on water, riding a cloud is a snap!!

As much as I enjoy Lewis’s apologetics, you see here the kind of circular reasioning he sometimes is forced to resort to. The more discrediting the tale of the evangelists tell is, the more honest they must be. The more that pre-Christian societies had their own myths of resurrected kings, the more evidence it must be that it was a spiritual anticipation of Christ. He says in Mere Christianity that we are to believe the religion on Jesus’ authority. But there is no basis at all for claiming that while he was humanly fallible in predicting the end of the world he must have been divinely correct about everything else.

8:18 “My words shall not pass away. This generation shall live to see it..” I understand Jesus to be talking about humanity on earth, as opposed to the coming new heaven, the regeneration at the resurrection. I’m a little astounded that Lewis has taken this verse so narrowly.

Yeah I picked up on that too. Matthew 24:3 has the disciples asking him when is the destruction of the temple, what are the signs of his coming and what sign of the end of the age. 3 totally separate events, but they didn't realize it. Everything he describes was correct. He said that the disciples would be martyrs and they were. They were part of the generation who would see these events begin to unfold. The order of events was not clear, but it's not incorrect. I tend to look at the chapter as one like a big checklist of things that either have, are or will happen.

The messiah was never ignorant in the human sense of ignorance... It is mans interpretation of scripture that is Ignorant, imperfect and flawed. The Pharisees suffered of such ignorance which the father was able to use to bestow salvation to all of mankind instead just to a few tribes out of many. God is great. Lewis makes a good stab at reconciliation between the ignorance of man and the Perfection of God.

One historical point here; Lewis errs on the date of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, it was begun and only one part of it (Die Walkure) finished around the time (mid 1850's) that Darwin's The Origin of Species appeared, the whole tetralogy wasn't performed until 1876.

I have one objection with Lewis here, the Last Judgement could also be literal. Yet Lewis seems to be assigning human characteristics to God or Christ. I think every religious person on the planet does this too. But look here at this: Judgement is over, hence the Last time judgement needs to be made rather than a traditional verdict; thumbs up or down as the Romans once did in public court. Sorry old chum but not a final grade rather the "wisdom of those who Judge" is over, allegory only to those who find God fearful (as I do) but think again, is the emphasis upon Judgement or the last time we need such fears? When our judgements are done and the Return is upon us the idea of "vengeance is mine say the Lord" is no longer scary, give Him your vengeance and your judgments and all will be well. Just saying. I've been here for hours and finally have the joy to disagree, but man this guy is GOOD!! The Devil is my ego but I wish you were alive to discuss such thoughts.

I agree, I did not agree with his declaration that Jesus is ignorants with his assumption of the end. Jesus actually did predict the destruction, in 66AD war between the Jews and Romans broke out leading to the complete destruction of the Temple and the rest of the city. Over a million Jewish people dead. It happened to the people and that generation Jesus was speaking to. This is what I think was what Jesus was predicting in the first part of his sermon regarding the end times and his return. I still think there will be and end and return of Jesus, like the Bible says no one can predict it.

Regarding the olivet discourse and the Loeds prophetic utterance that this generation shall not pass way until all these things take place was fulfilled in Ad 70 when vespasian assault and seige upon Jerusalem and the jews having the vision of the son of man coming in Judgment as Jerusalem fell is true..even Josephus documents chariots and angelic observations in the night skies above Jerusalem that he said he documented umder duress that those wjo later read he writings would think him mad...the Lord was not ignorant...the Son of man dis come upon Jerusalem with judgment as he did in 586bc when Solomons Temple was destrroyed. For furthur reading RC Sprouls the last days according to Jesua sheds much light on the fact Jeaua was mot wrong or ignorant..the partial preterist view of apocalyptic eschatological theology shows clearly that when Lewis said he wasn't a theologian he was clearly wrong and in more than one sense since we are all theologians, while the pressing issue we really face then is the question of whether we are good or bad theologians...whatever our state regarding this matter is always premised by the truth that we can all be better by Gods grace
