Nagorski recounts the stories of American journalists and diplomats who were in Berlin prior to Adolf Hitler taking power. He discusses how these individuals viewed Hitler and his rise throughout the 1930's.

Mr. Bowyer, this is the truest of statements about tyranny of socialism currently at issue in the US. It’s good that such a man as C.S. Lewis said this. When he said William Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is one of the most incisive studies of that period 15:28 I stopped listening because I know this book to be very superficial. Shirer was not an historian but a newspaper journalist, like Nagorski. Much better books have been written by historians since.
