I first heard of Messi when he was about 15 years old. They kept repeating "he's the next Maradona." Whenever I hear a statement like that, I immediately get turned off and take a rejection to the player. I watched one game of his in Barcelona B, and he forever changed my mind. I knew he was different and I knew he would be better than Maradona. I played football, and I know the difficulties of the game, and this kid at 16 could do things that professionals at the highest level couldn't even do. I was a hardcore Zidane and then Ronaldinho fan, but when Messi came to light, he was the best in my opinion. From the start, even before his first professional goal. He didn't have to make 500+ goals, he didn't have to win the Champions League, he didn't have to win the Copa America, he didn't have to win the Olympics, he didn't have to win the World Cup. He is greatness embodied. He is and forever will be the best of all history.

His goal against Mexico and his behavior immediately afterwards is what really caught my attention from the outset of the tournament. He celebrated the goal with his teammates in front of the Argentinian fans as expected, but he stayed awhile longer in that same spot alone after his mates had all returned to the pitch. He yells “Vamos” to the hinchada and gives them a reassuring look as if to say - “Don’t worry, we got this.” It was a strangely paternalistic moment, like a father speaking to the compatriot children he was representing. After that the floodgates opened. He knew time this time around that things would be different with the squad that he had behind him. Man, the youngsters desperately needed that goal to finally play loose and be themselves.

I watched this boy from Rosario, Argentina..growing up, and knew this kid had something, something different. 18 years I watched this magician play and I never ever doiubted him once. I supported him all the way....the bad times which were many, and the good times where he became a LION....and then the BEST TIME where he did not become a Lion..but became a SAVAGE !!!! HE is TRULY THE GOAT !!! I don't think we should be saying either one is better...Maradona or messi. It's impossible to compare generations. What we can say is that both were the best of their generations. Messi is great, but there was a special aura about Maradona. He could fill stadiums even as a fat guy! We are all exposed to messi every day in club football and Wall to wall coverage where as in Maradona day appearances were more scarce. Maradona had way more personality....more personal problems...and a huge ego. That's why messi is respected. He probably needed this world cup win to receive the same adoration as Maradona....butvon the field hezwas his equal, and more consistent. I think its just childish talk of GOATs...very much an American thing. Messi was already a great without a world cup win --The club game is where reputations are made these days, unlike in Maradona and pele's time.

What I gathered reading all the comments about Messi: Is that all of us around the world suffered with him, but also we never left him, and finally copa America came and the world cup was won. All emotions and happiness that Messi felt, we also felt. Ronaldo was benched and eliminated. And that left Messi at the top all by himself. !!!

I think as much as we wanted to say that you don't need the world cup to be considered the best - at the end of the day it is obvious after experiencing the difficulties of winning that trophy that yes owning it does put you into the echelons of eternal great players. With that trophy Messi has cemented himself not to be along the likes of Baggio, Platini, Zico, or Cristiano , but to be placed in the highest regards next to Pele and Maradona. And for me, being the contemporary player, Messi is the greatest of all time.

Most Sensible comment I've read in a while. I just think we can't really compare generations though. Although players are fitter and faster these days...players like messi are protected ( don't receive so many dangerous challenges) conditions are better ( they play on bowling greens these days), lighter balls, easier to score ( change in offside rule) I would say that while defenders are better physically, I would say where are the really skilled players...the contemporary players are more athletes than skilled technicians which is one of thexreasons messi stands out a mile!!!...and modric, benzene who have been around a long time. Mostvof the special players now are speed merchants! Vinicius looks the best for me of upcoming generation for star quality. The past had many really skilled players technically with personality. There may be olauers these days with excellent first touch and passing, but how many can really PLAY....not that many....Baggio, pirlo, kaka, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane...this generation doesn't have these guys...all capable of great forward play and goals.

um hey? Firstly FYI, Ronaldo did reach the Semi-Finals in his *first attempt* at the World cup in 2006. Not gonna comment on the fifa wc one, I can agree as a Ronaldo fan that the GOAT debate in terms of stats is over, but heck dont u dare say he din't do shit for his country. Before cr7 came, Portugal managed to only *qualify* 2 times, let alone win it, and not having any major trophy... After Ronaldo came? They qualified all the times (5) and 2 Major Trophies (Euro 2016) and (Nations League 2019) In Euro 2016 he was their Top Goal Scorer, not his fault 2 frenchmen attacked him in the worst way possible and he couldnt play the finals. He is the Top Scorer/Assister in Portugal's History, and by far their best player ever. Not to Mention he is The Best Goal scorer in International Football and has the highest. He always tried his best for his team, when he was getting benched by Man u he was angry (those were diff circumstances) but when he was getting benched by santos in portugal he never argued a bit.. its cuz he always cared about his team, country more, and was willing to give everything. It isn't his problem, Portugal probably have better indiviual Talent then Argentina rn, but if they have NO Chemistry and the coach made bad decisions, (like starting a 21 year old who scored only 1 hattrick against a mediocre team, and not believing their biggest hope,). Again, i too highly respect messi. Even tho my idol will always be Cr7, lets enjoy them both as they both are coming to the end of their careers. But people like you, should get support from mental hospital.

They even reched 3 consecutive finals 2014-2016 and just someone was needed to score atleast 1 goal each final to win the trophy. Its a achievement of team success to get there multiple times. What I think made the difference in this WC for Messi was not only he had the back of all Argentine and the players would give everything on the pitch for him but, as he stated in an interview, he also managed to detach from the pressure that he bore for so long for not winning anything with his National team and finally got to enjoy playing football. Of course there was the pressure of the games in the tournament but psychologically he detached from the pressure of winning it and I think that was key for him. I don’t think it would’ve been the same if he hadn’t won the Copa America the year before. And personally I’m so happy he managed to do it. I’ve been following him since his early days at Barca and can’t describe the amount of joy I got by watching him play, same as with Ronaldinho or Zidane but to be consistent like this for 2 decades… Messi the best ever 🙌🏻
