The fact that Messi retired and people always mocked that he never won an international competition. Then he comes back and shuts the haters up by winning a World Cup and two Copa Americas. I truly love the fact that Messi can tell his haters to go to hell. I'm surprised that he lasted so long as an Argentine citizen. I would've renounced my citizenship long ago and stayed in Spain. Messi was a gift from God for Argentina. And they treated him so badly for so many years. Maradona included. Messi overcame so much adversity in his life and as a single person, he never owed Argentina anything - NOTHING. Of course, everyone in Argentina loves him now since he helped bring home the World Cup. But they are not true fans. True fans love their players through wins and losses; especially losses. True fans are like family. You don't throw out your brother/sister/child over a sport that involves a whole team.

@@golfhound You cannot renounce to Argentine citizenship, it's not allowed like in another countries, so you end up being Argentine till you die (In fact, I'm Argentine citizen). He could have played for Spain, yes, but he never wanted that because he doesn't feel spaniard. It's true that mainly the argentine media criticized him a lot and expected him to carry the entire team on his shoulders. Mainly because they couldn't believe that by having the best player in the world, we weren't winning any trophy, just like he was doing in Barcelona. It was clear that the issue wasn't his fault but another one (the football manager and competition between the players). However, many people still supported him. His perseverance, despite all the critics he received, is an incredible lesson for many people to not giving up. His perseverance, a team that plays together and a supportive football manager, were the reasons for all the victories he achieved later with the national team.

The thing people offently confuse is the difference between a boss and a leader. A boss is the one who wants to be in front, orders around, acts tough. However, a leader is the one who pushes the team to the front while carrying them, who motivates them while doing most of the job in silent so that they can advance further. And that's the difference, that's Lionel Messi.
@SRVS194 ай бұрын
@jivalette Still remember the 8-2 loss vs Bayern in 2020. It was the worst Barcelona team I have seen in my lifetime. Many sports journalists and pundits proclaimed it's high time for Messi to retire and he can't perform well without Xavi and Iniesta. Little did they know what was about to happen after that. Messi stayed with Barca fully knowing that it was a drowning ship and gave his all to win amist all problems in club(Batholemu). Even God was baffled to see Messi's selfless dedication and knew this Barca do not deserve Messi. This is not the right place for Messi. Out of the blue, Messi who wanted to finish his career at Barcelona was left with no choice but move to PSG which shocked football world. He had very limited role to do there as it's 99% sure that they're going to win Ligue1. That move helped Messi mentally and physically. Unlike in Barcelona, Messi was not supposed to carry PSG on his shoulders. Not only did he get enough rest, but also got accustomed to a new footballing culture, new life and learned how to handle more physicality in Ligue 1 at his age which made him grow as a better footballer though it cannot be measured by any statistics. Unlike in the last years in Barcelona where he had to create and finish chances all by himself players like Mbappe and Neymar helped Messi concentrate more on playmaking, improve his passing skills and excel more in controlling the tempo of the game. The tension relieved, fully rested Messi was able to use a lion share of time in PSG to concentrate for Argentina national football team and the world cup in Qatar. And at last , it feels everything is scripted for him.
@SRVS194 ай бұрын
Feels like it's SCRIPTED for him to win this tournament in USA 8 years after that final vs Chile here. I always wonder what would have happened if Messi NEVER returned to the national team when he announced retirement after that final in USA in 2016.(coincidence). Messi getting injured and being substituted is a SIGN for Messi and Argentina that THIS is the RIGHT time to hang his boots. What a fairytale ending to a glorious career. Messi's tears after being substituted in this game shows us that his desire to win and love for football after achieving everything has NOT shrunk a bit. The ones who wrote this script made him SUFFER not once but 3 times in 3 years but against all odds he REDEEMED himself, he transformed himself into a leader and all those hardships and sufferings made him stronger and even more that even the ones controlling from heaven had no choice but bow down to his overwhelming desire to win a trophy for Argentina The story of Messi- The most DECORATED footballer of all time teaches everyone that initial failures and sufferings make success even more SWEETER and never give up your desire to succeed and being HUMBLE and innocent at the same time.

@JustKrin4 ай бұрын
A little sidenote that didn't appear in the video. After the 2016 Copa, he retired by saying "it was 4 finals, it wasn't for me". Many assume that he meant that by going out of the picture, Argentina would perform with less pressure. Many may have seen the video where they burn his shirt on Rosario's monument, but there was also a country and even worldwide support for him to change his mind. He came back because in his words "he wanted to set an example to the kids that followed him to keep trying". During that time that Messi wasn't playing, Argentina was about to not qualify for the World Cup, and thanks to a hattrick by him in the last match, Argentina went to the 2018 World Cup. Also during the final match against Nigeria, you can see him going to defend the ball all in an effort to not exit in the group stage, something that to this day he never did for both club and country. He did need to win something with Argentina to shut his critics up. The people that can see that he’s a phenomenon knew he was as good as anyone that’s ever played the game and all the titles with Barca proved it but to give even his most ardent detractors no chance anymore to doubt the many claims that he is the greatest ever, he had to win with Argentina and truthfully, it needed to be the World Cup. Winning the Copa finally, released some pressure off the haters but when he took apart Italy and then led like an absolute force of nature in that World Cup at 35(his teammates were the engine, he was the creativity and end product via goals or assists) and his last chance at doing it, there really could be no more denying that he is the most decorated footballer in history whilst being the greatest dribbler, greatest passer greatest assists and greatest scorer in history. Yes Ronaldo has more goals but he’s played more and that is pretty much all he has more than Messi that is important in a debate about GOAT status, Messi is the chosen one and it can’t be disputed. He’s been in 8 finals, Argentina wouldn’t have gotten to one of those finals without him and without him, wouldn’t have won one of the finals they did win, without him. Many times, Without Messi, they wouldn’t have even qualified for the tournaments, he’s had to do so many rescue jobs on Argentina qualifications, it is truly remarkable. With the exception of Pele, other all time greats won and lost a World Cup final, Ronaldo, Zidane, Maradona, it’s just the way it goes. His trophy cabinet say’s he’s the best, his statistics say he’s the best, his genius say’s he is the best and the combination of everything ensures that he’s the best ever.

Humility is a HUGE factor in our mindsets and we feel most comfortable following a humble yet capable leader, more so than following a capable yet egocentric leader. A great example of this would be his tenure as Argentina's coach. Everyone slanders that team because we know it was a shitshow and he had no bearing in tactics nor player picks, anyone got into that team and it was horrible. Following his advice as coach was hard since his words always came from a place of authority by jurisprudence instead of knowledge. The opposite would be Lionel Scaloni, a man that has shown time and time again knowledge, self-criticism, course correction, and level-headness that we rarely see in coaches for the National Team. He never takes results for granted and will never consider a rival an easy victory. Under him, the national team has a very strong bond.

@@Culer9605 Maradona 1986 > anyone any individual WC (including Messi). Argentina was a solid team defensively, but offensively was very close to singlehanded. Now Messi 2022 was 35, not 25. Could not have that kind of display at all times. But he could hardly play a better WC under those circumstances. And Messi WC > Maradona WC. While acknowledging Maradona 1990 and his ankle injury, 1994 and 2010 are big minuses. Argentine, early 50s.

Still remember the 8-2 loss vs Bayern in 2020. The tension relieved, fully rested Messi was able to use a lion share of time in PSG to concentrate for Argentina national football team and the world cup in Qatar.

feels like it's SCRIPTED for him to win this tournament in USA 8 years after that final vs Chile here.

They both knew it, and that's why they hated him so much. Messi is under 21 world cup champion, Olympic world champion, Copa America champion twice and a world champion at senior level. 8 time ballon Dior winner, 6 time Golden boot winner. He alone stands head and shoulders above ever other player with those unbelievable records and achievements. I swear, Messi is not a human being. He is a freaking god, period!!

How could you not give your all for someone who literally puts their body on the line for sport and country.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. In my opinion, based on the pure skill and talent on their peak, Maradona, Ronaldinho and few other players might be ahead of Messi. But based on the career accomplishment and body of work (1 World Cup, 2 Copa, 8 Ballon d'Or, 6 European Golden Boot, 2 World Cup Golden Ball, 7 Major International tournament finals (9 if Olympics and Youth World Cup are added)) Messi is #1 on GOAT list ahead of Maradona and Pele. If Maradona had managed to win the 1990 World Cup with everything else unchanged, Maradona could still be argued as #1.

2021-22 Messi locked in as a leader. I mean he was always a master playmaker, dribbler, team player, shooter and dominator in times; what just changed in 2021-22 was his seriousness about leading the national team. That small inspiration and motivation is very crucial in matches that are won by nationalism more than just skills. Unlike general club matches, most of the national matches are not actually game of statistics; but chemistry and might with proper planning and execution. He understood it and did his part to its full just as well as the Argentinian team did. He is the most complete footballer of all time and there is no denying on that.

Brilliant piece of narration. Every word of the script rings true. As an Argentinean myself, I think many people in Argentina failed to realize the pressure they put him under, especially the Maradona fanatics in the light of what Diego said about him, which was callous and very detrimental to the squad. That led many of his teammates to doubt him themselves, and some, to even usurp that place of leadership. Although Leo was wearing the captain's bracelet, others were doing the talking. They went along with Diego's style of leadership, a big mouth hot head, as expressed through the likes of Mascherano and others. It was bound to end in disaster. The squad was following the wrong leader and for all the wrong reasons. It took a whole new generation of players who had grown up watching Leo play on TV. He was their hero, their idol, and they imitated his style of play on every street corner and every vacant lot in every city in Argentina. When they joined the national squad, they knew full well who the leader was, and they were willing to lay their lives on the line for him. And the rest is history, as they say.

Messi's leadership grew from his ability, skill and mastery on the field trying to inspire his teammates quietly by leading by example.. to develop into a leader who was able to realise his power of speaking up to motivate and give verbal inspiration to his teammates with pre-game speeches and praise. That was the maturity and experience Messi gained after all that suffering on a international level to come to a point of enjoyment of the moment in the games with his teammates, to excel under pressure and adversity instead of overwhem him and Argentina. When the 2021 squad under Scaloni truly believed in each other as a group and the joint purpose to win Copa America for Messi. The 2021 squad benefitted on De Paul's strong defensive workrate in midfield, Dibu big saves in penalty shootouts, Angel Di Maria, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez all stepping up where others such as Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero could not provide the goals needed in previous big tournaments. It's an honour to witness Messi in this lifetime and for me he is the GOAT over Pele and Maradona, if only they could see what the leader he has become!
