GOLIATH Sized Devastation: Quarter Repeater with NO Spare Parts

This Mappin & Webb goliath quarter repeater was non-functional in every way - it could not wind, could not set the time, could not run and could not repeat the time. There were several broken and missing parts, none of which I could buy replacements for (including a wheel with missing teeth!). I didn't know it when starting out, but this eventually became THE most complex and challenging restoration I’ve completed to date.

I am an amateur watchmaker myself and I have always hesitated tackling extra complicated mechanisms or much older hand made watches where no 2 parts ever fit from one to another, I.E. Verge Fusee watches. I have never delved deeply enough into the hobby to feel motivated to invest in the very expensive specialty tools required to perform the necessary fabrication and repairs. Your work is stellar and your presentation during the video is informative and entertaining. You have a loyal follower of your channel.

Thank you! It truly is a rabbit hole in terms of the tooling needed. Anything is repairable, assuming one has the tools to make the new part, which is usually the case and necessity for time pieces this old. Sometimes it’s hard to justify the investment required.

All parts from the same model are completely interchangeable with each other. Perhaps someday I will invest more into my tools because I'm really fascinated by Fusee watches and would love to dive into them. So to see all its complications, and the repair techniques and special tools, was a treat. I had to laugh at the size of the thing, and how typical watchmaker tools don't "measure up" (sorry). I remember the first time I tried fixing a repeater. No instructions, no tutorials, for some reason I was just not able to find them at the time. I was able to figure out how things worked and eventually (with enough literal blood, sweet and tears) I got the watch fixed and resorted, it was a 1920s student watch practice that keep jamming. One tip I learned is you should never guarantee work on a repeater like this, all the little adjustable components tend to drift over time and you will need to break into it again. Also nice job in the teeth. I always found wheel cutting to be the most difficult part of watchmaking, and I am looking for better alternatives.

Wow!...Just Wow!...Given the right, or maybe even the not-so-right, tools there is nothing that you could not do to make a timepiece function correctly and look good doin it. Making the new gear teeth demonstrated a pretty amazing level of watchmaker's skill and it was a joy to watch it being done. The whole world-class expert restoration was just....Top stuff!

I have always enjoyed old watches and clocks. The worst part of my love is that I don't have the money to get what I would love to have. I am a Maintenance Manager of at a box manufacturing plant and at time I have to make the parts that have been damaged. Like you, I don't have all of the nice equipment to do the repairs and I am forced to use hand tools and a few pneumatic hand held cutters or sanders. I have always gotten a lot of enjoyment when I succeed and bring the equipment back online.

Incredible job! Straight beyond my imagination of what is possible... And what is not. Seeing the broken teeth, I thought to myself: if this guy doesn't get a new cog to replace it, it's all gone! I didn't read all the comments below so maybe someone already mentioned it. When it comes to soldering I think it would be much better to cut and place small piece of tin before heating it up, to not have a "mess". This would prevent additional filing down the extent of the tin. I really appreciate your videos and ASMR sounds. Cheers from Poland.

I followed this succesful teeth-and watch repair with great interest. My late dad, being a retired tool-and die-maker was asked by his friend, a watchmaker at end-eighty's to repair such a messing wheel for a standing clock. His procedure had a lot of simularities with yours, just all new teeth were filed by hand. Everybody became happy too with that clock alive again! Wow this video was super mesmerizing, and that hour went by very quickly. If it was 2 hours I also would've watched it. It was fascinating to see how the hour/15min repeater worked. I now have a good idea of it's basic construction. For repairing the teeth on the minute wheel I expected you to use either a laser welder or a tig microspot welder, but those are expensive specialized machines. I didnt expect filing the teeth by hand would've worked. That is some skill👍 That brass toothsmoothing machine is beautiful. A very nice video.

I have no skills for this kind of work (basically born with 2 left thumbs 😉) - but I've always been fascinated by the fine/meticulous engineering that goes into both classic and modern watches...so getting to see an expert bring one of these timepieces back to life is always a pleasure! The whole video was excellent - but I think my favorite parts were watching the restored balance wheel immediately start up when dropped into place, the entire segment demonstrating how the repeater mechanism worked and how you adjusted its sound, that wonderful rounding-tool whose overall design/look was like a work of art in its own right, and finally - of course - the end where we get to see the watch fully working once again and making those beautiful chimes. This was so very well done...thanks for sharing the journey with everyone...cheers!

I did stay to the end. The watch, outside of the case, sort of reminds me of the White Rabbit's (of Alice and Wonderland fame) pocket watch, with its out-sized dimensions. Brilliant repair job on the whole watch, and in particular the cutting of the new teeth on the second wheel. The creation of the screws was almost as amazing.
