Professional response: Railroads lease each out other railroad locomotives for continuous railroad operations. A train that goes from LA to Chicago and then on to, say the Port of Baltimore, just has to be recrewed instead of having the locomotives swaped out for the home road. This can avoid needless delays in getting the cargo to its destination efficiently. Gamer response: Looks cool!

Sometimes railroads will lease equipment from other companies especially if going from one State to another. I've seen Norfolk Southern on Union Pacific intermodels and CSX I think depends on starting and ending point
