That's a major load of coal .. I don't think I've seen 'em piled that high before, and I watch a lot of train vids .. good stuff, thanks.

I had to watch this a few times, the first two or three times I'm thinking he's not in run 8, but after awhile I can hear it, just the slipping wheels talking louder then the exhaust great video.

25:26 jumping & sanding dpus. I can't believe csx thought 4 locomotives was a good idea for 200 loaded cars

And they were heaping too, several had coal 2-3' above top of car when looking from higher up

Guys. What was the symbol for the coal train in this train video?
@davidmaust1415 Жыл бұрын
I don't know the # for train, @theoldmainguy has more of them memorized, but it would've left Cumberland yard between 10am and noon EB to Curtis Bay terminal

I think they double up 2) 100car trains so they only have to pay one crew for run

That’s normal loading of coal when it’s flood loaded. As far as locomotives they have a tonnage rating for each line segment of the entire system. Even if it’s on another railroad it’s based off type of locomotives. So locomotives are assigned to a train based off it’s toughest segment it’s going to endure. Newer locomotives will not allow us to dump sand manually it is all computerized now to keep from wasting sand. You can put a rubber band around the manual sand switch but it won’t dump until that computer says so.

A yr ago they ran with 3 up front and 3 dpu in middle and rarely stalled, even with 6 ES4400, they would still run notch 8 up the 10mi 0.8% grade. 4 is barely enough when track is dry. It didn't help that lead engine sand box wasn't working

You can blame shareholders for the cut back. Plus newer technology and higher horse power ratings. Plus if the sand got wet in the sand box then it’s not going to work. I would have had the CO step down in the nose to see if the valves are working for the sanders. But like I said that new technology will tell when to dump sand.

Nice catch of the coal train. What time was this recorded on Sunday December 10TH 2023?
@davidmaust1415 Жыл бұрын
It was just before 4pm, and it didn't reach old mill bottom rd in Mt Airy till after 6pm, next 4 trains were 15min apart behind it, as once it made grade, downhill to Curtis Bay

Great video, impressive stuff. Any idea of the tonnage ? You deserve an award for keeping the video rolling.

28,600 tons roughly, say each car fully loaded is 286,000pounds or 143tons times that by the # of cars and you get the total trailing tons not counting engines. Now like David said these cars look a little heavy, so it might be closer to 30,000 to 32,000 tons trailing if the other comments are right and there's 200 cars on this.
@gatorgator3942 Жыл бұрын
Maximum load limit is 237,000 pounds. We would always say 130 tons per car loaded was easy math and 30 tons empty. So even if they are loaded at 118.5 tons at 200 cars then the tonnage would be 23,700 tons. Engines doesn’t factor in on tonnage of train.

All mainlines like here are rated 286,000pounds, you'll get a couple shortlines still limited to 237,000 for example the Middletown and Hummelstown RR north of me is mostly 237,000 to save a little on running cost, I do notice the cars are label for a limit of 237,000 which I didn't notice before... that's rare for me, here on NS they are label mostly 286.@@gatorgator3942
