This is some video that I took of the newly formed CSXT. It was a time that you never new what paint scheme you would see when a train passes. All this video was taken on the ex-B&O Keystone sub, now the CSX Pittsburgh sub. I sure hope you enjoy, and if it works out well with viewership, may add more clips taken in other months.
Hope you enjoy this clip of the "CSX Early Years Part II". filmed January-March 1989"
Thanks for watching. Please be sure to check out my many other video clips from the 1970's up to today.

Ahhh the early days of the the rainbow fleet. Those southern units were a far cry from their origins. Closest points south where Chessie met Seabaord were Covington, Lexington, and Deane in Kentucky, and Richmond in Virgina. CSX seemed big on taking advantage of united assets. No longer leasing out, they could simply re-assign to brother terminals far and away. Thanks putting this up.

WOW!! A true blast from our railfanning PAST!! In 1996 my friend and I were on that old ROAD bridge in Garrett Pa. We saw an eastbound FREIGHT. With new GE locomotives but it was the helper unit's that totally caught us off guard. 2 SD45-2s! 1 former CLINCHFIELD still in black & gold. And the other was in Family Lines livery! And both running elephant style!! Those indeed were the days!!

Gotta love them GP40s and B36s. The way trains were meant to be handled. Down here in SCL territory the GP40s were called Fast Forties or Black Beauties for their ability to handle most any train. B36s got the nickname Tote Boats as they were put on intermodal trains, and for good reason as they could really get up and trot. One engineer told me they would bury the amp needle and keep right on pulling.

I sure miss seeing priority trains with four axle GP40's and B36's speeding them along. Those were the days. Thanks for watching...

well the FEC (Florida East coast railroad) still uses GP40-2s to haul their intermodal trains. and some widecab GEs at that.

Was an awesome time to watch trains on the old Chessie. Four axle diesels were no strangers too mainline trains. I loved when I would stay with my mom down in Crows, VA. Lying in bed at night, even though I was two big mountains away from the line. I could hear and almost feel those old EMDs screaming up the grade out of White Sulphur, toward Allegheny Tunnel with a loaded coal drag. The music would muffle and vanish once the head end made the west portal. But shortly, blast back through the mountains when it roared out of the eastern end and passed the old tower, pass over rt. 311 and disappear into Lewis Tunnel. For a kid that eat, breathed and slept trains. It didn't get any better. Thank you for posting these awesome videos.

That is for sure Tommy. Four axle power was the mainstay of the railroads back then.

They shoulda just called it The Chessie Seaboard, and just painted everything Chessie System. That woulda been a winner, IMO.

DTMWTMP I have to disagree. The SCL’s black and yellow, plus the FLS grey yellow and orange was the best. SCL’s had a nice pinch of ACL in it.

This is a time I wish I could see for myself, the colorful consist of the Seaboard System, the Chessie, the early CSX, they all seemed to be so common, yet at the same time, like the title says, you'd never know what you would see, and that's what made it special

Amazing footage! Surprised that only a handful of 6 axle units was captured. I was expecting some footage of SD units and more 6 axle u-boats. Either way, a great historic video, showcasing paint schemes and railroads gone but not forgotten.
