Thanks for this video. I just had one of these tests for the first time. I knew I would be getting contrast dye but I did not know what to experience until I was already on the table with the IV in. When the nurse told me what sensation (warm, sweating, like wetting pants) it was the first time I heard and it alarmed me just a bit. Then when she told me she would be putting nitroglycerin under my tongue, that also caught me off guard. Maybe some people do better not knowing in advance, but for me, I would have rather been prepared. After the procedure they let me just get up and leave, but after exiting the door I had to come back inside due to feeling faint. They brought me back to the back and let me sit for a while, gave me some water and a small snack (ad hoc from an employee) and let me rest for 15-20 minutes until my blood pressure returned to normal. In the end, I think these side effects were harmless but based on this experience, I think clinics should have a resting area and some snacks and be prepared for this sort of situation. I would not discourage anyone from having this test -- the effects were very temporary. But good to know in advance.

I had a water soluble CAT scan today and something went wrong. I won’t get into how they said nothing to me when they brought me back I had these in the past wirh no problem. As they stated the contrast, I first got a bad stinging near the IV site, then it became unbearable with pain going down my arm to my hand. I was screaming now in pain. Then my hand and arm started spasming. She stopped the flow, and made me go through the machine a few times but when done I asked if it worked, and she said, it was not sharpe “because you made me stop it”! What the heck was that all about? I never had this happen in the past. I always felt the warm sensation in my gut, and once maybe a metallic taste but never pain.

I've had a few CT Scans using barium drink and intravenous iodine and I know what usually feels like, the warm sensation like need to urinate which usually only is felt for less than a minute and goes away. Last month my PCP ordered one for me, instead of feeling the mild warm sensation I felt very hot burning not just in private genital region but entire inner thigh almost to knees and pelvic area, then it rushed up and my head was very hot and later I was treated at ER and doc said I had bad allergic reaction, he had CT Scan without any contrast of my brain. This was over 3 weeks ago, I was very I'll, dizziness fatigue nausea my head hurting very badly, I went to ER again and they did xray of my chest Doc said I had pneumonia and put me on antibiotics, my head still hurting. PCP did xray of my chest and told me chest cleared up. My brain feels painful inside my head. I'm 62 years old and worried about brain tissue damage, iodine went in my brain when CT Scan done weeks ago, my sinuses keep running. Thankfully I am still alive. I think I underwent incorrect dosage of iodine contrast. My brain hurts.

Hello Vanessa. I recently went to the hospital because I was concerned about an umbilical hernia. I did a CT scan, which I had done before in the past, but they had never put IV contrast with Iodine in it. They never asked, so I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know it had iodine in it. The scan went well and I felt warmth. It turns out that my hernia only had fat, so no bowel obstruction. After waiting for my results the hospital staff took my vitals and noticed my heart rate was pretty high. I took this for anxiety - as I usually get very anxious whenever they are taking my blood pressure or when I'm in a hospital setting. They eventually let me go, and drove myself home, but after about 20 minutes of getting home, I noticed my apple watch was still recording a high heart rate in the 130s to 140s. I tried going outside to get fresh air and I began stepping on the grass but nothing I could do would calm me down. I felt an immense amount of fear and my heart kept climbing up to 170 until I had to take my apple watch because I was so terrified. I had no choice but to call 911 for an ambulance because I had never felt so awful in my life. my hands felt numb and I began to get a cold sweat. when the emts came, they monitored my heart, and I was taken to the hospital and I felt so awful. They told me it was just anxiety and they did ekg tests but everything turned out normal. They gave me xanax to calm me down, but I really do feel like I started to feel bad after the contrast was injected in me. I have stugged with anxiety in the past, but not to this extent. Nobody really listened to me and they just attributed it all to being anxious. I didn't ever imagine that I would be taking a trip back to the ER. I drank a lot of water when I got home, but for the past day I have been still feeling off. Going to keep on drinking water. I remember taking an iodine supplement with kelp in the past and I don't remember reacting well to it. I remember getting tingling feeling in my hands and legs back in 2013. Do you think I could have had a reaction to the CT contrast? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

They acted like this never happens but as soon as they started the iodine , I felt warm everywhere tightness in my throat I felt like I was peeing and then heart pounding and I knew I was passing out. I talked myself through it so I wouldn’t pass out and once I was in a chair and they were checking my vitals and gave me a cookie I started to recover. They said maybe it’s because I didn’t eat all day.. I knew it was the iodine.

Awesome video! I had a CT scan w/IV contrast in the morning. Later that day, my face became red with a burning/flushing sensation. I noticed my left eye/eyelid started to swell. Is this a normal reaction or should I be concerned? Also, is it bad to have your phone/keys/glasses/jacket/belongings in the CT room? The tech/staff told me to place my stuff on a cabinet next to the CT scanner. Since some of these items are metal, I hope this doesn't ruin my phone or increase radiation exposure. Sorry for the dumb questions, it was my first time getting a CT scan.

Vanessa, what is the difference between an MRI scan and CT scan?
@filippebarros2 жыл бұрын
MRI stands for 'Magnetic Resonance Imaging' and it uses a very strong magnetic field to align atoms in your entire body in the same direction, then a series of radio waves are sent from the machine (which happen when you hear the loud noises) and cause the atoms to move out of alignment. This movement of the atoms from aligned to misaligned happens different (faster or slower) in different parts of the body, therefore the sensors in the machine can pick these differences and create an image that allows you to see varying tissues and structures. A CT scan, on the other hand, is a 'Computerized Tomography' which uses X-ray radiation to generate several images "in slices", of your body. At the opposite end of the x-ray source, is an x-ray detector, just like with normal x-ray imaging. Except in a CT scan, there are hundreds of images being taken in a shorte period of time while the machine spins around you very fast. And the 'computerized' part of this procedure is what is responsible for detecting these images at real time and organizing them in a manner that lets you create a 3d image or 2d slices of the body. Very intelligent programming and technology. They are used for different purposes. As far as I know, prolonged exposure to MRI machines don't have any effects, but CT scans put you through a lot of x-ray radiation in just one exam, so it is avoided unless absolutely necessary. And I believe the images produced by CT scans are sharper and allow for generating 3d images (newer technology). BUT MRI scans allow for better visualization of soft tissue. I could be wrong, though.

Hi Sharon! Sorry for the late response. Wondering how it went for you? Different places have different protocols, but IV contrast has come a long way nowadays. The amount of Iodine inside of contrast has drastically been decreased, reducing the risk of serious allergic reaction. Often times you may be pre-treated with Benadryl in order to help reduce that risk even further. But you should always mention your allergy to your doctor and the technologists. They will help you decide what your safest option is. ❤️

I broke my arm at work on dec 21st of last year and had surgery on it dec 29th (metal plate with 10 screws, mid shaft spiral fracture) for some reason there is swelling and a big lump on one part of the incision with redness and feels warm. I do not have a fever or chills so I wonder what this could be? Blood tests came back showing inflammation issues going on. White blood cell and red blood cell were normal.

No one knows your body better than you. So if you feel there is an issue, get a second opinion. There are some limitations in what can be identified on CT. But it is also a possibility that the Radiologist who read your CT could have missed something. I always advocate for at least a second pair of eyes. Suggest this to your physician, and if you get the same answer, ask what other tests may evaluate further. Good luck, I hope that you feel better soon!

I am not if I can explain it well, but please let me know if it was a mistake from their part. Thank you
@FreeAdoption3 жыл бұрын
It just means that the contrast was going into the arm under the skin and not in the IV because the IV probably slipped out of the vein. It can happen so that’s why they flush the IV line with saline to see if it flushes well. If there is a lot of resistance then the IV is not in a vein. The vein could’ve also burst while they were injecting too. You shouldn’t have to worry about any air bubbles. Usually if it happens they will put a warm compress over it and that’s about it. The body will absorb it over time

Yeah I am scared to death about this. I am not sure if I want to do it. I have a bit of an issue with my hernia potentually causing complications with bloating, stool impaction so I wanted to get a CT scan to see if any abnormalities are shown. I am not sure if it would make that much of a huge difference between contrast and no contrast But I have read some serous risks involved with iodine contrast and barium because it can contribute to renal failure, chronic and permenant abdomen damage among other things. I am also not the best candidate for something like this as i have sever anxiety with ataxia as well. I might look into alternative options if that is possible. With my hypersensitivity it would probably put me into a coma i feel.

Do they make these machines where you can stand up for a CT venogram? I think I might have a cervical spine instability that's compressing my vegus nerve and causing GI issues and causing ICP because of compressed internal jugular. but it don't think it would show up when laying down because it's posture related. Thankfully I've figured out that if I focus on standing a certain way my sinuses clear up and my tinnitus gets way better but obviously I want to figure out exactly why this is and this sort of machine would probably miss is by me needing to be prone.

@@jessicah3450 That is a good question! I’ll answer as best I can. Depending on the diagnoses CT offers different answers that MRI may not and Vice versa. Also cost wise, MRI’s are more expensive (in most cases) than a CT scan. While radiation doses from a CT scan are among the highest in diagnostic imaging, they are far within the safe/acceptable dose a person can receive. Your doctor is responsible for assessing the risks and ensuring the benefit of having the scan done outweighs the risks of the radiation dose.

Hey Christina! That’s a difficult question to answer! The dose varies depending on what type of CT scan one has. A head CT has a smaller dose compared to an Abdomen/Pelvis CT for example. My annual dose limit (as a radiation worker) is 5,000 millirems. Meaning I should not exceed that dose in a year. One Abdomen/Pelvis CT scan is about 1,000 millirems.

Yes, Iodine is in Iodinated IV contrast and is the same as the Iodine added to foods such as salt, and is also naturally found in our bodies. Our Thyroid needs it! However, it is NOT radioactive. Radioactive Iodine is used in Nuclear Medicine. These are different substances, whereas the Iodine used in IV contrast is a stable form of Iodine. In Nuclear Medicine we use the UN-stable form of Iodine, therefore causing it to be radioactive. In other words- Chemistry says they’re different.
