CT200h Navigation and Infotainment System Upgrade

My fellow Automotive Fanatics and newly acquainted Lexus CT200h Fanatics, I welcome you to my channel for another DIY!
Today, I will be showing you how to install an Android based Navigation and Infotainment system upgrade into your CT200h. This system was purchased from a manufacture from China and my initial impressions and use are mixed.
To cut right to the chase, here are my 3 top likes/dislikes about the unit:
Likes
- large 10.25” widescreen display, mapping looks great on it
- android based so you have the potential to download and install different apps
- full touchscreen
Dislikes
- very expensive
- manufacture did not include any directions so it’s not DIY friendly
-buggy and quirky software, some apps work, others do not

Since the manufacture did not provide directions, installation was a challenge. I had to jump back and forth between different sections while removing the unit several times.

Hi do you know if there are screws/mounting point for the bottom bracket for the screen? I’m in the middle of installing this and it doesn’t look like there are anywhere I can mount the bottom bracket to. Thx

Sorry for the late response. From what I can recall, no, there are no screws that hold in the bracket. It's all clipped in. The top bezel will end up snapping in place and will securely hold the monitor.

Great video, thank you! Definitely changed my mind about getting this. No joystick support, no steering wheel control when using the music on the unit, and that 1+ minute boot time.

Dima, let me clarify a few things for you: - joystick only works when you "switch" back over to the OEM menus - volume/track up/down work with new system - boot time is indeed long For what it's worth, I was also able to get my Android Auto to work correctly. Now I am able to have my messages read out loud and can reply. I will do a quick follow-up video soon.

@@TheAutomotiveFanatic Oh track buttons work on the new system? That's actually a big relief. Joystick not working is annoying, that screen is far away. Android Auto is super important so that is great too. But great to know that steering wheel track buttons work with Android Auto. My mind has been switched again haha.

@@Haloruler64, correct...when I am listening to music, I can track up/down, as well as change the volume. Getting Android Auto to work really renewed my interest in the unit. One of my original needs, was a system which had the ability to display my text messages as well as reply to them. Now I am able to drive much safer. And another bonus...when AA connects, it pulls Google maps right into the "drive" mode which is a huge improvement over how Google Maps is now. The drawback though, it's it's not the "full-featured" Google maps, rather maps designed for AA.

Can't decide between this unit or that mod from BeatSonic on the standard tiny display (where steering wheel track controls definitely don't work but the joystick does). Subbed to you, looking forward to future content.

@@Haloruler64 sorry if I wasn't clear Dima. The upgraded unit uses the AUX feature to play sound. When in the AUX, you are able to move from one track to the next with the up/down wheel controls. Volume also works too, which is nice. Deciding between this unit or the BeatSonic is tough...for me, the price difference was worth all the features the Android unit offered. You can download apps (some do not work correctly though) and there's no denying, that screen size is immensely more enjoyable than the OEM screen. As an added benefit now, my AA works so I'll continue to play around with it and see what else will work.

Thanks for honest review. I do own 2012 ct200h with factory unit and as many just don't like entertainment system comparing to this what we can get in modern cars . But the first thing I noticed in video is poor fitment that is noticeable. Also only touch screen when using Android. All that could be compromised if the price would be more affordable as the price stands out like premium product .

The buckle you're seeing on the left side, is a result of me not removing the metal bar underneath. I was not aware of this until much later after the install. I have since then, remove the bar and reinstalled the top bezel plate. It fits perfect. Regarding touchscreen, you're correct. It only works with Android Auto or CarPlay. Once you get into the OEM menus, then the cursor takes over.

Great product was having troubleshooting but now it’s working perfect super fast I really recommend it makes your car look much better and the rearview camera is much more clear and big picture

It's not a perfect system. Some people will like this version, some may like the OEM. It's not for everyone.

Hello, love your video. I must be very close because almost everything is working except sound and the rearview camera. The aux button is greyed out for me, did you ever experience this? Also is the default rearview camera supposed to work with this system?

A recent viewer indicated that they had similar issues. It turned out that they did not fully connect every thing. Make sure all your plugs are connected. As far as the review camera, it functioned like OEM.

Within the Android UI, besides the 2 gauges shown, does it have any other readings at all? Battery? MPG? Other car service related info? Thanks for the support and watching David. Regarding your question about extra gauges and functions, no, the system will not display anything else aside from speed, RPM, and miles left in the tank.

@Marcin, as I mentioned in my brief demo, it definitely has little software glitches. And for the life of me, I cant figure out why sometimes audio will not connect the first time. Have you noticed any glitches with yours?

I installed one in my S3 8v and works good, I haven't sound problem. It's always connected to AUX Input and i can switch into AUX / CAR MÉDIA just by press the (*) touch on the MFST. The only annoying thing is that the sound volume of the Android system is lower than the original car system, so I have to turn up the sound louder than normal and when I return to the vehicle radio system i'm surprise as it's extremely loud ! I thing your Lexus main unit don't accept the AUX input automatically when you start your car and you must switch yourself ?

Roth, if you're asking about the GPS antenna, it was mounting underneath and inside the dash. As for the MIC, I did not use it because voice was captured from my cell phone.

@@TheAutomotiveFanatic ok thank you! I just finished installing my Android HU on my 2013 CT. I routed the mic and GPS antenna behind in the roof liner. One more question if you can help. The backup camera does not work for me. The seller says I need to tap a red wire to supply power to the camera. Did you have to do the same? ***UPDATE*** There was no need to wire up anything. I just had to go into the settings to setup the head unit to use the factory camera.

You're correct Joe, I do not mention much about lost functionality. In some cases, this project is an upgrade, but at the same time, it can be a downgrade as it all depends on what's important to you.

great video man! I have also installed on my CT200h same android monitor, and to be honest the touch screen is a major setback. Would be great if Lexus remote touch could also be used for the android monitor but there is no compatibility between the two. I also have version7.1 of android pre-installed and was wondering, if you got the version 9.0 would you be able to send the link as to download it? Highly appreciated! ..and as for using the screen remotely (without touching fingers or so) I tried a wirelessly connected mouse...it does work..but not sutisfyingly .

Hello Mike, unfortunately, I do not know any aftermarket radio that will provide a high amp output like that.

You're lucky that yours came with the right stereo so you can plug it right into the CD I had to take out the amp which was below the CD player in order to connect maybe they gave me the wrong harness but it was not the right size to enter the back of the radio /cd player

@@TheAutomotiveFanatic I’ve already installed the new system, it’s almost the same installation process as it was with this one. The newer screen allows for CarPlay and android auto wired and wireless and is extremely snappy and fast, the screen is oled now too and allows for better screen graphics. Only cons on the device is the backup camera since it has a 5 second delay before it shows it, and the audio system becomes dumbed down using CarPlay but it can be fixed by just connecting to CarPlay and multimedia.

Joshw604, in my opinion, it's not a cost effective unit. However, having that large screen and being able to run Android Auto with Google maps is wonderful. There are other comparable units on eBay, but I do not know how good they are.

That's a great question MC T. You would think that because the speakers and amplifier remains the same, sound quality would not improve. However, I do notice a difference in sound quality when I run music off of the Android side.

I have the exact unit in my 2012 CT200h F-Sport. Couple of things I noticed with mine. My car didn't come with the OEM NAV display and head unit. Mine came with a 6 disc changer head unit, and a storage unit where the screen should be. Because of this, the wiring harness didn't attach correctly so I had to get a tech to get me a power line to power up the screen. Also I noticed you had to screw down the left side corner of the bezel. Mine too sticks up there and will not push into place! I purchased mine with the CarPlay optional adaptor and it works ok, but for audio and streering wheel controls to work, I have to use Bluetooth. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for your feedback Jason. I found some of your comments online and used them to determined if I wanted this unit or not, so.... I much appreciated what you shared before! After screwing down the left side of the bezel, I complained to the manufacture and they told me what I had to do to correct the left side (remove the metal bar underneath). They will also send me a new bezel. When the unit works correctly, it's definitely an upgrade to the OEM setup. However, when the quirks flare up, it can be annoying.

The CarPlay adaptor from Carlinkit works great with this head unit! My iPhone connects to the device via Bluetooth. A small APK has to be loaded into the head unit first, but after that it was really easy to configure. And you can keep using the steering controls via Bluetooth. With the wired CarPlay kit that came from GPSDVDNAV, I had to constantly stop the playback and then hit play on the Lexus stereo to get audio working. Not anymore!

@@jasonhoddinott9413, I do have the plug that allows me to use Android Auto, but I have not had a chance to fully incorporate it into my setup. The new bezel is expected within 10 days. Once I receive it, I'll dis-assemble some of my setup and see if I can get the car link working correctly. I've also noticed that in the Cali sun, the display/brain is no match for heat. It will occasionally reset when it's hot.

Tyler, I do not. It's possible that the vendor I purchased mine from, puts them together because the performed quite a bit of QA testing on it.

Yes, the back up camera still work...the moment you shift into reverse, it turns on. There is no need to wait for the Android system to boot up.

This item was several hundred dollars. I understand, it is not cheap so it is not for everyone. The OEM reverse camera worked with this setup.

Hello there, I am not sure what you mean by "entrance" for a screen but you CAN add the big navi screen into your dash. You will need to cut an opening out.

You have to connect to the car's AUX jack.

@@miguelsanchez2368 Unfortunately not. From my recollection, the system is set up as an external product. The only way you can hear any sound coming from it, is to connect it directly into your CT sound system. Unfortunately, it's only option is the AUX jack.

There are a few different links on eBay ad AliExpress. I recommend buying one with the latest Android software.

Another problem is with the MIC . When you receive a call , the other person hears echo off is voice . It mutes the music when you answer a call , but when you hang up , you cann´t hear music again - you have to restar andoid to be able to hear music again. Also on the stearing wheel , the up and down volume buttons , when you press the volume down it increases the volume rather then turning it down . The UP button works well

The screen itself and the start up animation looks good. However, everything else about it looks cheap. I wonder if anything has changed and if they had made any updates? Especially for the price.

So since you're using the additional provided harness to do the power and instead of using there's two plugs that don't get plugged in that were there before and you're using the harness for those two I don't know what happens to those I'm disappointed or scared that I'm going to lose the use of my USB and 3.5 mm headphone jack that I used to connect my telephone to my stereo in my CT200H

The old stereo works just like normal.

Once you unplug everything from the center console you'll need to turn the plastic so that the little eyelet that holds the cable onto the center console will release

Zay The Banana, because the new Android unit takes up the Aux input, it would function on that. As far as the USB input, it would still work.

It's suppose to play through the AUX connection. Did you hook it up that way?

Unfortunately no. The mouse only works when the system is switched over to the OEM menus. Once you switch over to the Android side, you lose that option. You can though, still control volume and track up/down.

Mikado, unfortunately, you cannot use the OEM joystick with this setup.

You can always put a third-party car launcher on your Android if it's moving too slow or crashing you can put Nova launcher and there's several other launchers for the car

Yes, the OEM camera setup worked fine.

You're lucky I had to follow instructions L to connect the wiring harness power line to my amp which is beneath the CD player. Then I had to hook the original power line to the female side of the harness connection 6. Has the male side of connection 6 went into the back of the amplifier. I finally figured out the backup camera to work with the original but that took away the lines that it was supposed to give me. Yeah I still do not have sound if I'm in the Android side I have sound if I'm in the original car system side where I can go and do navigation in there although it's awfully slow and I can do the radio in there which is also awfully slow which is strange considering I have 8gb ram. But as soon as I move into the Android side and I try and go into my ways I can't hear anything I can't hear anything on KZbin I couldn't find a place to stick those or connect those AV cords yellow and red ones I thought there was a line that was supposed to get a line that runs to the 3.5mm headphones jack but I don't see it

kaleab2009, yes it can. Keep in mind though, you will need to cut into your dash to make a hole for the entire screen.

So do I have to have a wire plugged in to my 3.5 mm headphone jack. I didn't buy this to have to go and block up the jacks that are already in my car that's how I currently connect to my stereo in my car I don't want to have another plug plugged into that if I didn't have that what would they do they should have had it in the wiring harness to connect internally and not have to go through my 3.5 mm headphone jack. This is a disappointment

For example, shutting down when it’s hot outside; having to press multiple buttons to get the sound to switch on? I’m using CarPlay but assume the issues would be the same as AA. Thanks!

Rodolfo, the Chinese units are a hit/miss. For my particular unit, the sound quality ended up being cleaner than the OEM unit. Perhaps I got lucky? It's still not perfect though because there are other small quarks that bother me. Thanks for your comment and feedback!
