This week's video comes from the films of the late Beyer Patton. Beyer visited Chicago sometime in the 1970s and rode the Chicago Transit Authority CTA Dan Ryan Red Line. The CTA rapid transit trains are called L trains, referring to the fact that most of the system operates on a elevated structure. Beyer's film features the L trains operating along a portion of the L too.

A beautiful unique rapid transit system

Starting at 2:54 is a set of 4000 series "L" cars (built in the 1920s) running on the CTA's Evanston line. Note the trolley poles extended on these cars as the Evanston double track line from Howard St. to Wilmette had overhead wire instead of 3rd rail at this time. The 4000s would be retired about 1974 and the trolley wire was replaced with 3rd rail about 1974 as well. Nice old films of some of the CTA's "L" lines and thanks for sharing!

A and B skip stop service! 2 and 4 car midday service on the Lake Dan Ryan. Memories of my youth. And I've been a cta employee since 1996

….Used to take the “B” Train from 63rd and Stony Island To Downtown back in the day. I could never forget the cool whoosh of air as we entered the subway. If the trains were really crowded, you could stand between the cars as they were moving! 😂

Went from Randolph st. station to Wrigley field on the "L". Way back in Aug.1971.

For sure! It’s a great place to visit. When in Chicago you can also take a Metra ride up to Kenosha to see our old PCC cars!

I always considered Chicago very much like Toronto! I’ve been to Chicago once and rode the L the downtown experience was quite fun actually! Great vintage video and music as always!

The 'L' remains largely unchanged since the 1970s. Cars are newer. Track is identical. Still a little sketchy depending on the station. No change.
