I bought this game the day it came out on Steam (aswel as Call to Arms) I also have CoH and CoH2 and all its dlc's (and often play the Blitzkrieg mod). However I find it strange you compare this game to CoH and not even mention Men of War. The game that comes closest to Gates of Hell is Men of War: Assault Squad 2. It has the same mechanics, micro managing and logistical challenges. Personally I see Gates of Hell as a sequal to MoW:AS2, and I can't wait to get my hands on the upcoming Men of War 2. This game and sleet division, for its bigger picture and scale and also Ostfront's FPS action blended in there. Will have to give both a try once a sale comes. Any recommendation for a the next game Ill be waiting for: A game slighter further on the FPS side of the RTS-FPS spectrum, same concept of this game but experience is of any one unit at a time in the middle of a bigger battle, but still hold that spirit of Strategy. Few games out there in a more traditional FPS like BF/HLL/Enlisted, but much slower with a RTS feel of scale and micro/macro elements like this game.

I find it really amazing that the series still exists in the form it does. The very first game in the series, also based on the same engine, was "Soldiers: Heroes of World War II", released in 2004. This was not a CoH imitation, but rather a more accessible "Commandos". Because in this first part you only controlled a small squad of soldiers, it didn't yet stand out so negatively that you had to manage each soldier's inventory individually and babysit them all the time. But as you can imagine, such an overly complicated and micro-intensive system doesn't scale very well. And yet, since then, numerous developers based on the same engine have released plenty of CoH imitations without implementing the essential improvements COH has had since Part 1. Even the animations of the soldiers are sometimes just as unintentionally funny as they were almost 20 years ago. How the series could still be successful enough for so long is a mystery to me. I, for one, would like to play something else than the first CoH over and over again. Even if there are some great and interesting mods for this one, you get tired of it at some point. But the numerous CoH imitations based on the GEM engine are simply not a worthy alternative.
@twiglets22 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. I'm not technical, but I have heard the engine on this game is very limiting, and is very noticeable when you play skirmish with several players, it just can't handle it. I hope Men of War 2 improves on this.
@Chuck_vs._The_Comment_Section2 жыл бұрын
@@twiglets2 I am not a "technician" either. I got my information from the PCGamingWiki. The problem isn't so much that they've been using the same engine for all these years, but that they've never used the money they've taken to significantly improve the engine on a technical level. A big improvement would be if, as a kind of "workaround", you could disable the inventory system.

They haven't finish the Modern Warfare themed Call to Arms, that game was the closest thing to the original Men of War gameplay experience but sets in present day instead of WW2 . Hope I come out of this video with a yes, I should buy it. If not, oh well, still plenty of SD2, MoW and HoI4 to play in this lifetime.

@@twiglets2 Having just tried the bootcamp and Trial By Fire missions of GoH, I can tell you that this game is basically MoWAS2 except it looks cooler and shinier, so I definitely recommend you get the other one. Some things to mention though, MoWAS2 can be a bit dated : all of the in-game tutorial videos stopped working and the devs never fixed it, but you can still find them fairly easily through KZbin or Steam forums. The first mission of every nation is basically a very cinematic tutorial on tactics, but not about mechanics. Also you don't get the over-the-shoulder/3rd person view on direct control, it's all played through bird's eye RTS camera. And finally, the menus are from 10 years ago and it shows. Other than that, they're both the same game with the added bonus that the modding community for MoWAS2 is pretty damn solid by now so you can find entire campaigns more easily.

Haha thank you for your kind words! In my opinion the AI is pretty decent, but not perfect (it never is!) There are definitely times when the troops do stupid things, like they won't all line up in a trench, one of them will stand next to the trench and die which is frustrating. But on the whole I think they respond well and I can't think of a strategy game where the ai is 100% perfect. Hope that helps! There's also a new DLC which I need to check out, exciting times!

@@twiglets2 That's really interesting. The way I described my experience: sometime FTL commands which way to go around a tree or bolder or whatever. But usually, not. Up to the grunt. Likewise SL usually leaves all that to FTL and below. But not always. good review - but you missed to add the observation on how slow and animation for the plane is a bit ridiculous, instead of been a fast plane bombing / strafe objective or so on. Also the edge of map, is empty, not field of view, they could set some hills or more sky quality. Also you didn't mention about the size of the map, which feels small after a while. They need to increase the size of the map for the modding community to produce good maps.

@somenerd1183 yes thank you for raising this issue. It's often brought up as the main criticism that Ostfront is simply a dlc of mowas2. I assume those saying it aren't being literal, but are saying it because they think that the game doesn't add much to mowas2, and in many ways has less content.
