I really like the sleek design of the new CTA subway cars. They look better than the New York City MTA’s R211 gangway cars.

I love this. When I was in the Air Force overseas, I loved seeing any reference to Chicago. This was back inn the 80's so we didn't have the innerwebs yet. But I love seeing things like this. Not just from Chicago...but anywhere. Oh, I'm a world traveler now but Chicago is my home.

Hey. This is the best move yet I have ever seen in the history of public transportation. It makes it easier for visitors to find their way around the city. In this case, it's the famous "el". I know you have now a ton of stations written up for not having an elevators and are at work trying to make the improvements. For the next Ride the Rails, see if we can get the guy to announce the famous "This is ---" so that way, those who are watching can really get a "narrated" version. We have a lot of transit systems that really should be doing what you are doing. And it's why I subscribed to this channel.

This is about one thing that I miss about living in Chicago...(their entire public transit system as a whole, too). I'm from/live in Indianapolis. WAY different story! Just over 100 years ago, Indianapolis had the world's best transit system (street car/interurban; c. 3,000 miles of track--counting surrounding areas outside of Indianapolis). Present-day, it's been proven, doing a ranking from 1 to 100, with 1 being the best, 100 being the worst, Indianapolis is past 100. Why? Indianapolis barely spends anything, if at all, on public transit. Those of us that don't have a car, and have to rely on the bus...it sucks!!!

This is necessary to avoid overcrowding. Bear in mind that this line runs entirely within the Chicago city limits, through areas with very high population density, and the CTA runs eight car trains which can get quite crowded. In the downtown area, the stations are only a couple of blocks apart because hundreds of people might get on or off a train at each station. If the stations were farther apart, practically everyone would have to get off the train at the same station, which would result in dangerous crowding of the platform.

I used the red line a lot at a child in the 60's, and was always drawn to the view of Graceland Cemetery (between Sheridan and Wilson). When I moved out of Chicago, I studied later about all the famous people interred there, but I also learned that the "clear" field at 50:00 is the "potter field" section, where hundreds of poor, including many unidentified Chicago fire victims of 1871 are buried in unmarked graves. Unknowingly, my childhood friends and I used to sneak into this section to play.

Those are tracks that lead to the elavated track system through the loop. They are used when the cta reroutes the red line do to construction in the tunnel system or when they used to close the tunnel stations on weekend nights to clean.

Before 1993 the Dan Ryan trains would go through the loop and join the Lake Street Elevated (now Green Line). The current green line south used to dip down into the State Street Subway just south of Roosevelt. In 1993 the red and green lines essentially were switched south of Roosevelt and the current tunnel from Chinatown was built to prevent the bottleneck that would’ve formed had the new red Line used the old portal immediately south of Roosevelt
@michaelbrinkers1145
@michaelbrinkers1145 3 жыл бұрын
Both the comment above are correct. Whenever some bozo does something stupid in the State Street subway (Red Line), service to/from downtown can continue by diverting the red line trains to the elevated Loop tracks, used by Orange/Pink/Brown/Purple lines....by using these divergent tracks (and at the other end, the Brown line tracks near Armitage). These stupid bozos are not rare....it seems to happen every month, regardless of weather.....some brain chemistry makes them think they can wrestle with a train.

What are the green 2 4 6 8 and 10 markers along the tracks? They look like positioning markers for different length trains but they don't seem to appear where a train would logically stop.

Yes, they’re markers for informing the conductor where the train should stop on the platform, based on the number of cars that train has. So 4 would be the stopping point for a 4 car train set for instance.

@michaelbrinkers1145
@michaelbrinkers1145 3 жыл бұрын
On the Dearborn subway line (Blue), there is a walled-up tunnel between the Clark-Lake and Grand stations. It is at this point where the route "bends" from its diagonal Milwaukee Ave direction, to its horizontal east-west Lake St direction. This walled-up tunnel was supposedly to emerge into the Lake Street elevated (unconfirmed urban myth?). If you watch the Blue Line video (Forest Pk to O'Hare), you can glimpse it as you leave Clark-Lake.

There are other lines which run down highways in Chicago too. Remember the highways were build starting in 1950s, and neighborhoods ripped out to make way for them in older US cities. When got federal $$, made easy with no right of way issues. This line currently being studied for expansion further south but would not be in highway. The streets which cross over often have bus loads of people who get on. Highway is wide, but people also live right up to it in many places. If this video were few years older, you would have seen miles of high rise housing projects to East (right) which have since been torn down. The red line goes 24/7 and is busiest in system.

14:59 Congratulations on winning the American League Central to the White Sox. Think you guys have another 2005 in you? Man, that was a special season for you guys. Too bad we couldn't quite duplicate your success in 2006... We need to get something going like that again, like Cleveland did in the mid-90s or we here in Detroit had from 2011 to 2014, then KC and Cleveland carried the next few years (2010s were pretty dang good for the American League Central, I'd say, with what, four World Series appearances In a span of five years? If not for Boston in the 2013 ALCS, it would've been five consecutive World Series appearances for the American League Central... that was BY FAR our Division's best stretch! Let's get back to that success!) Anyway, bet you guys were surprised by how vastly improved the Tigers were this year, huh? Maybe we can get things going again.

That's what I'd like to know. Not only does it inexplicably create an inconsistency in its service pattern, but as far as I'm concerned, it's not very future-proof. To make matters worse, the track layout north of Howard not only hampers terminal operations but also means that combining Red Line operations with one of the north forks in a way that mitigates conflict with the other would force it toward _Skokie_ instead of the more logical Evanston. Then again, what do I know? I've yet to even step foot in Chicagoland...

What's the speed limit of cars in the US? Those cars seem to be flying damn.
@ZviJ1
@ZviJ1 2 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the extent that a given system's tracks can handle a higher speed. For example, the Long Island Railroad tracks (and probably CTA's) have a higher speed limit than NYCTA's subway tracks.

That's the way they are built. One next to each other (Three in one). It's probably due to space constraints that they were built the way they are. Possibly also due to lack of funds for the project.

This was done to avoid overcrowding during rush hours. The platforms were made twice as long as a typical station so southbound trains and northbound trains would not stop opposite each other at the same time, since this could result in hundreds of people suddenly flooding onto the same narrow platform. Because the platforms were built so long, they touch each other and essentially form one six-block long platform.

When it was built was longest subway platform in world (May still be?) made easy to build. Beyond train stops, the city has pedestrian tunnels (called the Pedway) which also go to subway platforms, as well as directly into some buildings without having to go outside.

Chicago was lucky they didn't have a Robert Moses in charge of these infrastructure projects. (Moses was the infamous "city planner" in New York who had an absolute antipathy towards all things rapid transit.) I look at videos like these and while I marvel as the sights, I also shake my head over "what could have been." Can one imagine one of the IND lines nestled in-between one of the expressways in NYC? I was to Chicago twice in passing in 2002, the second time riding part of the Blue Line from Clinton to LaSalle and probably Jackson before heading back to take the Greyhound bus headed back to New York. There - as on this Red Line - the Type II track construction ("half ties" embedded in concrete) stood out for me; it was a fixture of track construction of the IND subway in New York in the 1920's and beyond (built long before its 1932 open).

You have to buy a Ventra card or a fare card even before you can get to the trains. In Cleveland Ohio, some people are able sneak on without paying. But if you're caught riding the train or bus without a fare card or the driver of the bus can vouch you paid cash, you'll be arrested and given an expensive ticket.

Also, you guys were idiots to sue Peter Cetera and company back in '69, because you guy's could've had a massive amount of PR by allowing them to use the name. Kind of surprised there are no (sound) barriers between stations and the roadways for the parts with the line down the centre of the expressways for safety reasons. Never mind even just reducing the sound pollution for potential hearing damage but things like rocks, disintegrating rubber or even entire tires could cause potential injury to someone waiting for a train. Might not have happened yet, but I only needs to happen once.

The only express service, the Purple line, used to be non-stop from the Merchandise Mart downtown, to Howard Street...but little by little, they kept adding stops to it to slow it down. Boo again. And the CTA has nothing on NYC's lines to Rockaway and Coney Island.

Ask them why the el which this city was once so proud of is now being covered up? First in uptown they put those walls on the sides covering it up and changing how it looks and that was a famous stretch shown on Hill Street Blues for years. Now they are doing the same in Lakeview with the new flyover putting those walls up covering up that cool view we have had all these years! And I read they could have done double decker tracks there like New York has which would have looked so cool, but instead they are going with the walls again once again ruining the look! Sad to see something we were once so proud of being covered up. New York beats us again!

@@jackmorrison7379 Most subways nowadays are built deep underground though. Obviously access tunnels are needed, but generally you don't rip out an entire street and build cut and cover like they did in the early 20th century. The CTA has very low ridership considering the size of Chicago, they're obviously doing something wrong. I would never want to stand on a subway platform like this in an ocean of noisy cars zooming by. I would probably actively avoid taking the subway.
