The fact that the old Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee overhead poles are still there makes me happy. Hope they stay for years to come.

Fortunately, they must remain for the time being, because they carry other electrical lines as well. A legacy of the days when both the North Shore Line and Commonwealth Edison were owned by Samuel Insull.

About that accident from this past week... This here is an almost textbook trip on the yellow line from my experience. There are only two tracks available for use for most of this tight route. The last time a conductor could have switched tracks was around the 8:00 mark. About 8:40, the conductor slowed down/stopped. There, they should have been able to clearly if anything was in the way. So... Was the conductor supposed to switch tracks? Did someone give them enough notice? Was there a sign at the 8:00 mark to tell/remind them to switch tracks? And that day, was clear and dry. Why was snow removal vehicle even needed? Definitely some miscommunication going on. But I honestly don't think it was the conductor s fault.

Rob Dehlinger: I think you'd like the horns on SEPTA NORRISTOWN-69TH STREET DARBY L LINE that are built by ASEA-BROWN BOVERI. Even those cars would be ideal for SKOKIE SWIFT SERVICE. Those horns would draw numerous complaints by Skokie Residents and may fear that their windows might get shattered by their sounds. Also the horns used on SEPTA LIGHT RAIL VEHICLES on the # 101 MEDEA and the # 102 SHARON HILLS LINE would also likely draw many complaints. I'd still like to hear horns like the SEPTA L and Light Rail trains on the SKOKIE SWIFT.

@@northshoreline6704 I like the whistles on the 4000 SERIES L CARS so much better. Even the horns on the dark green Old IC PULLMAN-STANDARD CARS built between 1926-1929 sound quite similar to the whistles on the 4000 SERIES L CARS.

I'd love to see the entire North Shore interurban restored to Milwaukee. The right of way still exists, so it shouldn't be particularly expensive, and I'm sure a frequent electrified service would be much moe popular than the slow Amtrak route which shares tracks with freight.

Actually, the one - time "Niles Center "L" was built out in undeveloped country just before the Depression and then WWII happened, stifling development. Skokie began to develop in the early 1950's, by that time the North Shore Line ran non- stop and the "L" line was discontinued

Actually is was the CTA who demolished them. The Asbury, Ridge and Didge Avenue Stations were used as commercial space until the late 70's or early 80's and the platforms through Skokie existed until they were demolished after 1964, although I think the station buildings were demolished earlier?

It is funny that the North Shore Line Catenary was installed because they felt that Third Rail at street level was unsafe, yet the C A & E was all third rail except the Geneva branch (Abandoned YEARS before the rest of the line)

This is a unique line with a unqiue history. It is a short segment of a longer intercity/suburban line which operated from 1926 to 1963. From 1964 to 1966 the federal government, the Chicago Transit Authority and the village of Skokie collaborated to operate this service as a temporary project to demonstrate the utility of public funding for mass transportation. The service proved to be so popular that it was made a permanent part of the Chicago "L" network after the demonstration ended in 1966, and still operates to this day.
