Quik „how to“ use a ultrasonic cleaner! 1. fill your cleaner with fluid. In Germany we use water with a special cleaner for ultrasonic cleaners. I use a concentrate. So i just need 250 ml cleaner on 10l water. 2. Heat up that thing. ( you will find the right heat in the descriptrion of the cleaner/ Mine is 65 celsius) 3. put you Parts in the cage ( demontage everything you can) 4. let it clean for about 30 mins. 5. put the parts out, spray them with wd40 5. enjoy your super clean parts ;) I think your main problem was the cold fluid. And try to clean your parts with brakecleaner etc. before. You will get better results and save a lot of money. Also you can use the cage to put out your hot parts. Hope that will help and bring back the happinies :D

Dear Makari. Yes, that's how to use a machine like that. But I simply cannot understand how somebody could use this WD 40 crap instead of good products (or do you use it just for cleaning stuff?)! In videos from Mustie1 channel he uses his Ultrasonic cleaner with best results nearly in every video. He is a VW car guy also. Maybe CT should watch some of Mustie1 vids!?

Dear@@makari8819 What happened to good old "Caramba"??? Gibt es dies gute Zeug nicht mehr? Es existieren genügend andere Rostlöser Produkte welche alle besser als der WD40 Mist sind (allerdings nicht im Discounter). Billig und gut ist halt eben eher selten. Please be so kind and allow me a suggestion respectively an advice: If I don't want something to oxidize or to protect I meanwhile use Ballistol oil (formerly known as an oil for weapons). That's a really miraculous stuff for maintenance. It's unbelievable for how many things it can be used. Even wood respectively furniture can be freshened up and your best friends (dog) can be treated with Ballistol also. Read the descriptions, you will be astonished for sure. I also use it for all my tools, even Garden tools. I don't buy the spray cans often, mostly I buy the oil. This is much cheaper and better to use respectively to dose. By the way: It is not a chemical product, it's a very good natural product. Best regards luck and health. Viele Grüße, Glück und Gesundheit. Postscriptum: Sometimes I use silicone spray or silicone oil to protect/maintenance or lubricate also. Especially with plastic stuff etc.p.p. it goes very well.

@@Chr.U.Cas1622 yeah, i agree with that. Are you from Germany ? Or why you write german :D ? There is just one big difference between most people and me. I have to eran money with that because i do repairs etc. as my job. And i ever have to find a solution between money and use. So WD40 has a huge marketing and every body knows it. Therefore i can buy it ultra cheap. I love silicon spray. For plastic or rubber gaskety i use it very often. But yeah maybe im gonna try ballistol. I never tried Caramba. Maybe im give it a try to. Thanks for the conversation ;)

Dear@@makari8819 Ja, ich bin Deutscher. 1) Yes, try Caramba if available. 2) And of course try Ballistol. Some days ago I maintenanced my complete trailer with a piece of cotton rag and the oil. The multilayer wood panels suck it in until it is enough. Afterwards those dark ted brown panels looked like new. I cleaned the zinc metal frame with Ballistol also. 3) The one and only problem with silicone oil/spray is that after using it usual oil will never stick on again. So it's very important to decide at first. From a very old Lady I learned 5 years ago to clean my electric lawnmower with silicone spray after every use (especially the underside but not the sharp edges of the blade of course!). If you do so before using a new mower etc.p.p. = no kind of dirt/grass will get a chance to stick on. Of course it helps with used equipment also. I also use silicone oil to clean respectively take care of my electric wires/cables if the outer shells are made out of plastic. 4) If it's rubber I use another very special and unbelievably excellent liquid product (also for every tire I owe (trailer, car, wheelbarrows, hand truck = Sackkarre, Bollerwagen etc.). All rubber (car) parts become like new after using it (door seals for instance, no ice/ water problems in winter). If you are interested I will tell you the product name. Best regards luck and health.

A word to the wise like Eryk said below your unit should be on a solid level surface and you should watch your water level especially if your running it for an extended period of time, it could overflow. A quick and dirty way to convert the temperature is to double the Celsius reading and add 32. This will get within one or two degrees of the farheint temperature.

The ultrasonic cleaner is a great thing. I use it myself for many things. Put the ultrasonic cleaner on a sturdy level work bench or table, not boxes. The boxes can give way with all of that weight, and if they ever got wet, you could have a major catastrophe where would collapse and you could get a serious burn, and/or break your new ultrasonic cleaner. Just a suggestion.
@ianallen2
@ianallen2 5 жыл бұрын
CT, you are using it like a parts cleaner. It is designed to clean hidden passages and small intricate things like carbs where there might be blocked holes where you cant reach or see. To use one, best to have a parts cleaner where you wash a party, then dismantle it, take the rubber seals out, place the parts in (small parts in something like a collander) and then set them to clean. Dont rely in the sonic cleaner to clean the outside of things which can be done before. I wish I had one at times as I have to clean a carb now and again. :)

That black will continue to slowly form unless you clean the parts off with solvent or brake clean or carb cleaner to neutralize it. Some aluminum doesn't react well with certain cleaners, especially some of the degreasers. Always a good idea to have a solvent tank nearby. If you can find a 5 gallon can of carb cleaner it works very well in those ultrasonic tanks. They usually take up to 30 minutes to reach temperature.

CT, another great video. That's an awsome piece of machinery you just got. Forst off dont use purple power with aluminum. They warn you not to cause it will streak or haze up aluminum. Second take everything apart and use one of those magnetic bowls to hold all the same stuff that will drop off the screen. Third leave it in for at least an hour. Also take that blue wrap off the top lid before it melts to it. Just trying to be helpful. Not not picking you. ChemTool is what you want to use or if you need cheap pinsol qorks just as good but takes longer. Keep up the good work bud.

Hello my Freind, grettings from Austria. The carburetor you have to disassemble, float out, electric choke NEVER Ultra Sonic. Heater ON. Otherwise it will only clean outside, but not inside, where it matters. Gasoline pump has a diaphragm, which should now be broken. DO NOT overfill the device, rather take out a few parts. And you mix the cleaner with water, not as overdosed as you did. For carburetor there are special aluminum cleaner, I use EMAG EM-404, mixture 3 to 5%.

Enjoying following your VW restoration project. I just found your KZbin channel about a week ago. I like the style of your videos. Doesn't bother me when you dwell on a bolt or part. I understand this is also a way for you to document your project. And if viewers don't like the speed of flow then they can just use the scrub button and fast forward through segments. Also like how your logo has evolved and your editing skills are improving with each video. And just fun to watch the process of restoring the van. My first car was a 1964 VW bug. Also had a friend with a late 60's van. Recently have a friend with a Westy and I have a crush on them. Good read sometime is Drive Nacho Drive about a couple that travels in their Westy. One thing, since I'm new to the channel I have been using the playlist. It seems a tad out of sorts. A lot of stuff gets repeated. For example episodes 15, 16, and 47 are exactly the same (belly of the beast). I know it's a lot of work, but would be nice to clean up the playlist to help the viewer follow your restoration in chronological order. Keep up the great work. This is fun!

You should have set the temperature first around 50 Celsius, (122 degrees Fahrenheit), and let the ultrasonic cleaner warm up to that temperature first before adding in all of your pieces. Even Mustie1 warms up his ultrasonic cleaner first before he puts his carburetor parts in. Also, you should have dismantled the carburetor more and removed the jets, float, needle, gaskets, etc to clean more on the inside of the carburetor, and not worry so much about the outside. Gunk Carburetor and Parts Cleaner is an cleaner to use int the ultrasonic cleaner. Also, any electrical components should NOT go in the ultrasonic cleaner. I saw that a piece of the electric choke was put in the ultrasonic cleaner. Not a good thing.

I’ve been using an ultrasonic cleaner (AKA schmoo tank) just like that one on small engine carbs for years now. I do two or three weed eater/chainsaw carbs a week on average. I use Simple Green HD from the Homeless Despot mixed with water in mine. Be careful, as some solutions will discolor aluminum. I set the temp at 50 degrees. I usually run a couple of 30 minute cycles. More for ones that have been sitting for a while. For holding small parts like jets and screws, I use a tea ball that I picked up at the dollar store. Mine didn’t come with one like yours did. For corrosion removal, I use a handheld blaster with baking soda. Won’t harm aluminum and washes off with water. BTW, wash off your parts with carb cleaner or mineral spirits BEFORE putting it in the tank. Your solution will stay clean longer. Between the ultrasonic cleaner and the soda blaster, parts look like new when I’m done. BTW, the temp readout is in Celsius.

I think as you get more familiar with the machine, and if you test different cleaners, you'll get the formula correct. As for me I would hang on to it. If nothing else you can primarily use it 4 carburetors and all the stuff that has little nooks and crannies. Great job as always I'm excited to watch each video. Take care and God bless

Yep, some friendly criticism comments, your doing great and learning as you go! In the end, you will be glad you have that ultrasonic cleaner, just find a nice level home for it and don't put so much fluid in it. Its not about how many parts you can put in it at one time, its how clean fewer parts will get and disassemble everything first. BTW, I haven't noticed if you have one, a bench grinder with a wire wheel sure would help get ride of a lot of rust...and make those old reusable parts look almost new!

Do not overload the cleaner, I'm sure that unit have some limitation, you need to adjust the timer for various loads , more surface to clean requires more time, more load to carry more power you need, and if there is limited cleaning sonic vibration power then more time needed to do the job, also must heat liquid first for proper cleaning.

I’ve used molasses and water mixture (9 parts water to 1 part molasses) to get rid of rust and it works perfectly. The molasses used to feed cows works perfectly and it dirt cheap. Get it at any feed store - but you’ll need your own container usually. Stinky as hell, but you put your mixture in a storage tote, add your rusty stuff and leave it for a week or so. Can’t remember how long it lasts for, but disposal isn’t an issue bc it’s just molasses and water - but check your local disposal policies. Oh - DO NOT put aluminum in the solution; for whatever reason it dissolves aluminum. Interesting process, but very damaging. Good luck!

Nice cleaner machine, they sell a "sensitive metals" solution, for brass, aluminium, zinc, etc. maybe that product does not darken them. Also, I've seen a laser rust cleaning machine but after a quick search it is $10000 even the cheapest one... It's like sandblasting but without the sand and the air, the rust just falls away as you point the beam... A M A Z I N G !

Hello guy! I'm really enjoying your Kombi restoration videos! I have a carburetor similar to this one from the video, maybe from a younger generation, because the throttle valve is a bit more modern. Looks like his making is from 1967! Here in Brazil they are rare, because the ones used here were the 30 PICs, without the system of afferent drowning by resistance. What I do not understand is what is this part that stands as a base below the carburetor? The piece that is written "APG 28 DR". What is the function of this piece? In Brazil we have never had anything like it! Does it look like a variable venturi valve? I will continue watching your videos, because I want to see this estate "snoring the engine" very fast! See you!!!

Just gonna add my 2 cents but you need a parts cleaner or your diesel to clean the grubby grime off and leave the fine cleaning, like carb internal cleaning to the Ultrasonic cleaner. You want to keep as much contamination out of the Ultrasonic cleaner as much as possible. You'll find your own way of doing things as you go (thumbs up)

The black tint that you saw in some areas of you carb body is due withot any doubts to a kind of chemical reaction, I suspect something related between the formula of the cleaner liquid chosen and the compose of the carb aluminium alloy plus the warm temp, once I did a cleaning experiment, I remember had soaked a carb body parts in boiling water with lemon and soap and I have got the same black tint, in other probe I used vinager and everything turns dark, I wil advice you, change the cleaner liquid use for example the GUNK carburetor cleaner.

You're, um, you're supposed to wash them before putting them in. Not like a complete scrubdown so much as a spray down with a hose. MAYBE a go through a kerosene parts cleaner, but almost always usually a quick scrubdown in the sink. I mean throwing a carb in there yeah sure everyone does it. But then you threw the whole engine bay in there

How can I put this pp.when these are used to de-cumstain a laptop main board, they at least spray down the cum into a sink before getting it all up in there in the expensive machinery. Also, diluted more = you can see what's going on. Experiment with ratios. I'm willing to bet you only need to line the bottom by an inch or two.

Older carburetors are now and then made of an aluminum magnesium alloy. And if they come into contact with an acidic cleaning agent, they will turn black. I have that with the Dellorto PHBH 30 BS carburetor of my Vespa P200E. The case was made of aluminum and remained light. The slider was made of a magnesium alloy and turned black. Maybe it's also an electrochemical process. But that's a guess. I dont know. Your VW carburetor has white oxide spots. This is a clear indication that the carburetor is made of aluminum and/or magnesium. And it gets darker, which suggests that it's an aluminum alloy with magnesium content. Maybe you will need a special carb cleaner.

@GettingNervous

I would recommend to clean the parts in a parts washer (www.amazon.com/Goplus-Gallon-Electric-Solvent-Cleaner/dp/B01CKUNYJQ/ref=sr_1_4?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=parts+washer&qid=1559596437&s=gateway&sr=8-4) first. After this you have to take apart the carb and set the temperature from the ultrasonic cleaner to about 50°C. The two digits on the left side from the temperature unit is the temperature you wish to set, the digits on the right side is the actual temperature (as labeled). And it is important to switch on the heating for best results. I only use clear water. Some types of cleaning solutions are agressive to aluminium parts. An ultrasonic cleaner works good for carbs, for all other parts the parts washer is the first choice.
