Don't think I've ever seen a Channel closedown before. Their "footage of the Queen visiting the region" film was what HTV used to do as well.

When it went to static at the end, was that because the tape ended or was that Channel Television turning off the transmitter?

I think the tape ended.

They just switched the transmitter off rather than the usual practice of fading in a testcard and test-tone then switching off the vision carrier with a unstable jumpy black screen and finally switching off the transmitter resulting in snow.

There was no ‘stand by’ mode on electronic devices then so either tv was on or off. If left on overnight and unattended it could overheat, especially if it had been on all evening and start a fire.
