NANAIMO - The tragic sawmill explosion in Prince George has workers here on Vancouver Island questioning their own safety. A sawmill, by nature, is a dangerous place to work, but two recent explosions in B.C. has brought this issue to the forefront.
Western Forest Products operates eight sawmills on Vancouver Island and there are dozens of smaller cedar processing mills up and down the Island.
The explosions in Prince George and in Burns Lake this year has led the Provincial Government to issue a province-wide mill inspection for all B.C. Mills.
Some workers on Vancouver Island have contacted their union representatives to voice their concerns over work safety and the fear of a similar incident happening here on Vancouver Island.
Western Forest Products declined an on-camera interview with CTV News, but said in a written statement the company release this morning,
"Western Forest Products extends its condolences to those that were affected by the recent tragedy. Out of respect for the investigation we will not be commenting on the recent accident in Prince George. Managing fire risk and developing response plans is a critical priority to Western Forest Products."
The cause of the Prince George explosion is under investigation.
