Just visited this place yesterday, what a find! Mill and buildings still look great and YES the Alberni Pacific Railway is running again but only part time at the moment; you can ride the train a short distance along the Port Alberni waterfront from it’s station there and back. Once full restoration has been completed the eventual plan is to resume the full train tours from before. Mill demonstrations are once again run on select days during the Spring and Summer. A very fun site to visit.

I'm glad there are people who see the historic value in these locations. Many fascinating locations end up disappearing :(

Very cool tour, thank you! Remarkable, that everything appears largely intact, as it was when the Mill closed in the mid 60s. Thank goodness the decision was never made to demolish the buildings, and/or sell off the machinery. What a very cool timepiece of milling technology from the early 20th century. Even that blue International truck is a semi-classic. The International S-Series trucks like this one, date from the late 70s/early 80s. A number of years ago, I worked as an exhibit designer at a National Historic Site Grist Mill here in Ontario, dating from 1810. The reason that facility remained largely preserved and intact for full restoration was, like this McLean Mill, it remained fully operational until after WW2.

So true - A lot of these sites fall apart quickly, but it sounds like they had some support for preserving it even in the 80s. But with 30+ buildings it is a huge job to maintain. That's cool that you got to help design the exhibits at the old stone mill! It looks like an amazing building - I've tagged it on my travel map for when I'm out that way :)

Thanks for sharing the story of this old mill. Awesome that they restored the old mill. I love the weathered old wooden buildings. Cool place for an adventure! 👍 ~ Kristine N Xander 🐾

Wonderful! It looks like a few things have been added since I was there filming. It seems odd to see the pond dry, lol! My visit was during the winter, before covid, so most of the services were closed too. I'm so glad we have these historic sites to explore.

Apparently there was a problem with the dam so they drained the pond for repairs. Thanks for watching - Keep exploring and safe travels!

It had a lot of atmosphere, especially since we were practically alone when we went!
