I hope the world some time later acknowledges what atrocities were done to Cuba and Venezuela in the name of communism and socialism, because it can't just be brushed off as US economic sanctions, it's ridiculous and insulting to us locals who had to go through living a brutal dictatorship and worked our asses off once we made it out

Having travelled to Cuba, one of my tasks was replacing electric wiring, wall switches, and outlets at a ministry center. Nothing had been upgraded since the mid 1950's - before the Castro regime. As a byproduct of the work, I checked the current at various times of the day. What didn't surprise me was the voltage varied from 100 volts to 118 volts and the power cycled from 59 Hz to a low of 50 Hz at a location in the general Havana region. A complete lack of power for 12-14 hours per day is one thing, but low voltage and unstable Hz is another. Anything with an electric motor is first to burn out - refrigerators, electric fans, air conditioners, power tools, etc. Unstable current also affects the life and performance of electronics like computers and televisions. An economy cannot be sustained with oxcarts, bicycles, candles, and kerosine stoves. For the regime, control of the masses requires control of the media that requires power to run TVs and radios. That is all collapsing for the general population, as well as the privileged elites: politicians, state security, and the military who require electronics to monitor and control the masses.

I was born in a communist country, where I experienced life with only a couple of hours of electricity every other day. Not to mention, there was no hot or cold water for showers, electric stoves, or air conditioning. Yes, blackouts were common back then, too. No wealthy Western countries wanted to invest in communist countries plagued by high corruption and crime rates, which shared none of the values of capitalism. Even a country like Russia has implemented some elements of capitalism, but Putin decided to consolidate power among the oligarchs to achieve his czarist dream. This means that a country can’t fully achieve long term prosperity by being half-a_s communist and partially capitalist. Xi is doing the same thing in China. I didn’t realize that China didn’t want to invest in Cuba, especially since Cuba is so close to Florida. Investing in Cuba can give China a spying base to influence FL to divorce the US over Trump. China has been exerting its dominance across various continents, yet it hasn’t prioritized feeding its own people, but give up the piece of steak, Cuba. That’s new.…

China IS investing in Cuba for the very reason you mentioned. They're trying to keep it "low-key", but you can bet the NSA, CIA and DARPA are very well aware of China's intelligence gathering operations. Perhaps it would in the interests of the US to enhance security at Gitmo. Two can play at that game!

"US and Cuba had close relations." That's one way of putting it. Cuba started introducing reforms like 8-hour work day, minimum wage and giving peasants legal titles to the lands they farmed. US companies had sugar-farming interests in Cuba, so the US backed a coup. Batista's regime was a series of human rights abuses and corruption, but he did indeed have good relations with the US. Not to say Castro was any better, replacing a military junta with a military junta of a different color.

Communism does not work. The "dictatorship of the proletariet" leads always to a dictatorship of one person, a cult of personality, in which the leader rules until they die or are deposed. In Russia, "communism" led to the rise of Stalin, who ruled for thirty years. In Cuba, Fidel ruled for forty-seven years. In China, "communism" led to Mao ruling for twenty-five years. In North Korea, there has been a dynasty since 1948, with Kim Il-Sung passing power to his son Kim Jong-Il in 1994, who passed power to his son Kim Jong-Un. The most important issue, however, is that these systems never lead to providing better lives for the people. China has adopted a hybrid system, with the party at the top and relatively free markets below. China has state capitalism, not communism.

But there is always a tap inftont of the house with water. This is after all a 3rd world country and hauling water is not the worst thing. As for food there is lots street vendors abound. At this time of year there is limited produce. Soon we will have tomatoes., beets, carrots lettuce and other cooler weather produce. Right now the mangoes and avocados are delicious. The power is not as bad as you say. The longest we go without power is 6 hours. People in my neighborhood all have some kind f supplemental lighting. I bought a car battery here so along with my charger and inverter I can run a fan. Very few people haveA/S, You paint such a bleak future for Cuba but I really feel Cubans are very resourceful and will overcome the government. Unfortunately the poor , the pensioners and others will not fare as well.disadvantaged and those on government pension will suffer.in the worst. Darwin, survival of the fittest. Those disadvantaged people will die. I'm sorry to report. As for me a Canadian life here is good. A can of crystal beer is still abound a dollar Canadian. Rum is $11.95 for Havana club 3 annos 1.14 liters. You mentioned about special cards to buy goods at a resort. There is no problem using a Canadian credit here so no need to buy a special MLC card . In conclusion.ive been a regular to Cuba (11 years). I don't stay at resorts but I live with the people , there is so much more I would like to share with you but typing on a phone is not my idea of communicating. Cheers, an avid follower. Peter. For example solar energy is increasing in popularity in the rest of the world and the price of solar panels have rapidly decreased in the last ten years... It is always cheaper to produce the electricity with solar panels than to buy foreign oil... So in case Cuba had chosen to give a good deal to Chinese companies ( = to give guarantees that their investment is secure ) for making investments in Cubas's energy / electricity sector then they would be better off today....But it seems like the Cuban goverment is a prisoner of their communist ideology and thus not able to understand the problems with a state run economy....
