My dad was born in La Habana in 1963, thankfully my older uncles were born in Venezuela and that's how they eventually claimed the rest of the family and came out to Venezuela, but everyone left again, my Cuban family left in the 90s and my brother and I along with my mom in 2001 because of communism in Vzla and now most of us live in USA, others in Spain and other Latin countries. We are all spread out.

I’m from a small town in Oriente and we had the “Committee for the Defense of the Revolution” spying in every block. But hunger didn’t come for a couple of years. It came later with the government’s rationing of everything from beans to shoes.

Carlos Eire's book 'Waiting for Snow in Havana' is a wonderful introduction to the topic of Cuba and the persecution that ensued under Fidel Castro and his 'barbudos'.

This is important and helpful information. The story of the capture of Cuba, as well as all nations that have had similar governmental take over, is vital to understanding how it happens. I read the memoir of a Cuban-American who came with her family in the late sixties before our government lockdown in 2020. "Lights Out" had prepared me to anticipate what the next tyrannical move might be. The professors story is touching. One bit will stay with me forever: his student who explained why the others were mum, "They have never talked about God in class."
