#isopods #cubaris #rubberducky Cubaris sp. ‘Rubber Ducky’ is one of the most sought-after pet isopods, due to its cute appearance. It is a fairly expensive isopod. Is it worth the hype and the price? Are rubber ducky isopods really one of the best pet isopods? In this isopod care guide, I’ll introduce the Cubaris sp. ‘Rubber’, isopod, discuss its care and housing, the potential for this isopod for use in Bioactive vivariums, and finally, as a pet / hobby /display isopod.
I got my original Rubber Duckies from Dan at www.mittenexoticsgr.com/

👋 Hiii I’m Rubber ducky keeper from Thailand(not breeder) I have a little trick that I found myself to share with you guys. -I use no.00 coral sand as a decoration( they are pretty good looking and beneficial) , a little bit of egg shell powder and fine crushed cuttlebone (I think it’s easier for them to nom) - For humidity control I use unglazed pot filled with water and place them on sphagnum moss (very good when you are not at home) hope that’s help 💖 sorry for broken english

Glad You finally did Rubber Duckies. I live in Thailand and have R.D. as well as several Cubaris species such as Panda King, White Faced Panda King, Red Skirt, Hong , Amber Panda, Amber Firefly, Bumble Bee, Emperor Bee and Green Laser which are the slowest breeders and seem to give birth to only one at a time. There's a few others that I can't identify. Some I've had for just a few months, others for a couple of years.

That’s interesting that there is an isopod species that produces only one offspring at a time! Does that species seem to offer parental care?

@@Aquarimax Merry Christmas Russ. Not that I have observed. The collector says there are nearly no more to be found at the known sites so it does seem that it really is that slow at reproducing. He gave me one snow white specimen which I think is an albino but people have said on KZbin that an albino must have pink eyes. That can't be true, can it, as they don't have haemoglobin.

Can you do a video on most active and least shy isopod species? Like top 5 or something. I would like to have some that are really fun to watch. And if possible, a video on how to tame and socialize your isopods. I don't know if you have tried that, but I would love to get some tips if you have. I'm working on socializing my pet roaches, with varying results depending on species. But I leave my isopods alone in fear of stressing them out. Would love to be able to interact with them though.

Haha, I love the song. Great information, too! I only recently learned how much duckies love/need water. I got some white duckies recently and think I was keeping them too dry. One came up and was "drinking" water as I sprayed it down the side, while several others laid in small pools formed on leaves. Some didn't move, but they were still alive when I checked -- just happily wet. Wonder if they're used to thin layers of water in cave systems, maybe from dripping limestone stalactites (calcium-rich water?). Interesting to think about.

Can Rubber Duckies be housed with other isopods other than springtails? I’m thinking of planting a large terrarium as I’m a plant nut but would love to keep some little friends in there too - I love the rubber duckies for obvious reasons! I also love other isopods so was wondering if they can co-hab once their colonies are big enough?
@Aquarimax

I think that depends on a lot of factors. If you have a moisture gradient in the vivarium, and keep a species that doesn’t burrow as much as likes drier areas, you might succeed!

Out of curiosity can you elaborate more on what you are referring to by “smaller enclosure” to start them off in? what did you use ? Would something like a 4x4x4 acrylic cube filled half way with substrate, a large piece of cork bark taking up the whole middle and some moss on both sides with a small area left open beside the bark that is taken up by leaf litter and sweet potato be to small, just right or too big for a starter colony of 13 rubber duckies in your opinion?

Hey, can you maybe help me out a bit, So I've been taking care of dairy cow isopods for about 2 months now. When they first came they were healthy, they were walking around the box but then when I saw that some baby isopods are starting to grow so I decided to upgrade the box to a bigger box and it took them a long time to adapt to their new enclosure only a few isopods were roaming around the box most of them were only inside the wood. Later, I went outside then when I came back home I saw an isopod dead on the soil but I don't know what was the cause of its death, but its friends still ate the dead isopod after that situation I chose to put leaves as a base layer ( a lot of dried leaves) and place two wood barks and some moss, coal, rocks and placed their food on the wood and finally most of the isopods came out and stayed near the rocks and moss and some of them also stayed under the coal. One day, When I woke up there were isopods feeding on the dead isopod so I did not think of it that much and at that moment there weren't that many mites there are like a few but they are not like a lot, they are not roaming around the whole box. Today, I was looking at my isopods when i found an isopod walking with only its back legs most of its front legs were gone and also its antennas i did not know what happened and then i saw its stomach and there was some kind of yellow stuff and dirt but there weren't any mites on it and i dont think the few mites in the box could eat its whole front legs and antennas in a small amount of time so i texted the owner and the owner said its friends might have eaten its legs and antennas off because it wasn't strong it was weak and maybe it was also hurt, but I'm not sure and I'm scared that are the mites doing this or is this is just something normal can you give me some tips?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about this…it sounds like the isopod may have been injured (perhaps during a molt) and then chewed on by other isopods. Mites can be annoying but I have never heard of them attacking isopods directly.

I haven’t worked with that brand, but I use an organic potting mix with my duckies and it seems to work well. I will be investing in some high-quality isopod mix for them soon though.

There is some confusion there, because there is a SPECIES called ‘Amber Ducky’ as well as a color variant of ‘Runner ducky’. Called ‘amber ducky’. 😅 The hobby should really come up with another name for one of the two 😂

I absolutely love rubber ducky isopods, but I'm trying to decide if they would be a good choice in my house geckos bioactive enclosure. It's a very tropical environment, with about 9 quarts of substrate which consists of Josh's frogs ABG, coco fiber, small bits of green moss, and plenty of sphagnum moss. It has a drainage layer with clay balls to keep the substrate moist. I've never owned isopods before, and this is my first bioactive tank so I'm quite new to this. If you think they would do well with this setup, how many would you start with? I worry about them getting to spread out, or getting too many and having them outgrow the tank.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! The first issue I would consider is whether the house geckos would eat the rubber duckies!
@Little_Duck_Duck
@Little_Duck_Duck 2 жыл бұрын
@@Aquarimax I've thought about that, since that would be a very expensive meal for her! Penny, my gecko, seems to be quite the picky eater. I've offered her a variety of different feeder insects, all of which she left alone aside from small crickets. I'd imagine with plenty of cricket to eat and a good layer of leaf litter would deter her from eating isopods.
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 2 жыл бұрын
Rubber duckies do appreciate a more nutritious substrate, and it is hard to say whether your gecko will be interested in the isopods, but a good layer of decaying leaf litter will help provide nutrition for them.

I'm a beginner and I bought a Cubaris sp. Amber Ducky. How do I care for them and can I house them with my Dairy Cow isopods and will they interbreed? I don't want to have hybrid isopods. And can I feed my isopods with pacman frog food?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax Жыл бұрын
Welcome! The amber Duckies definitely won’t interbreed with Dairy Cows, but the dairy cows are likely to outcompete them over time. They would likely eat the Pac-Man frog food.
