Do you need more than 16 colors for tracks? There is way to do it easily in Cubase. Go to Project - Project Color Setup and pick the amount that is more convenient for you. Customizing the User Interface - Track Colors

Is it possible to create a "Global" color preset, instead of just a project setup?

I was praying it wasn't limiting to 16. Its still a pretty strong limitation considering you can't even export your color palette and import it into another project. Although actually I guess there's a way you can save a preset with the settings of instrument filters, that can then be used to auto-color things using the preset you have stored as a default (see that's not a preset if there's ONLY a default to store). I haven't tried this, and it seems silly not to have a way to just gradient-color your tracks and mixer channels, but that's me coming from Reaper and FL Studio.

I don't call those "presets"l I call them parameter variations. Presets are little files you can save that store your values and can be loaded into another project.

Yes, it can be loaded into another project when you set it to defaults
