CUBE Kathmandu Hybrid 45 625 Review - $4.9k

The CUBE Kathmandu Hybrid 45 625 is a feature-complete speed pedelec, ideal for ebike commuting or touring. Available in five frame sizes across two frame styles, high-step and mid-step, but only one color scheme. Very wide 10-51 tooth cassette with high end Shimano Deore XT derailleur and shifters. Premium integrated lights with excellent positioning for the headlight, puncture resistant reflective hybrid tires designed specifically for fast riding, and durable plastic fenders improve safety and add utility. Comes standard with the highest capacity Bosch PowerTube 625 battery pack and their faster four amp charger. It's secured to the frame using an ABUS keyed-alike cylinder, which can be matched to additional cable, folding, and u-locks. Premium Magura MT5e hydraulic disc brakes are lightweight, predictable, and incredibly powerful. The large 203mm rotors and radial quad piston calipers are powerful and fast cooling. SR Suntour air suspension fork is highly adjustable, fairly lightweight, and quite beefy for a hybrid electric bike like this. The tapered steer tube, 15mm thru-axle design, and thicker 34mm stanchions are trail capable and well-suited to 45km (28mph) riding. Upgraded Alexrims with reinforcement eyelets, locking ergonomic grips, tool-free adjustable kickstand, minimalist chain cover, comfortflex saddle, and two year comprehensive warranty set this ebike apart. The battery cover does not lock to frame, though the battery itself does. The bike is fairly heavy for a hardtail with an air fork because of the high capacity battery and integrated rear rack. While the display is easy to read, removable, and has a Micro USB charging port built in, it is not compatible with the Bosch wireless smartphone apps like other newer models. The motor is fairly loud and uses energy quickly, the fenders can rattle quite a bit when off-road, no side windows on the headlight, the bike is priced higher than average due to the premium parts.

I had the 45 . Great bike, but I changed to the RM roadster this year, I still think the Kathmandu was good value in comparison. I solved the rattling front mudguard problem by using a silicone band from a Moon led light bracket, it was a lot more substantial than the Cube one and it worked a treat. Silence

One bit of advice I'd give to anyone who owns one of theses bikes is never leave the bike out of your site for even a fraction of a second. I had mine pinched. Make your you buy a really good lock for this bike. Also I'd say my one and only isue with the bike as mentiond in the vid , is the spoke magnet how easy it is to get banged out of place.

Thank you for the detalied and objective reviews over the years. I used surplus Cube frames to built my own bikes. Nice to see the Kathmandu frame to find its position as speed pedelec. This is the best rack solution on the market. But the details are mixed. My guess is that the air fork is aluminium instead magnesium. This have to do with certification test with the components. It is cheaper to get already certified components for 45km/h speed pedelec. So you find many Maguro MT5 but typical forks w/o mount points. I do not think that mount points for fenders fail in the certification test but simply they are overlooked, like on my Grace Easy S which also lacks mount on the fork. The fender mount is simply garbage. On my Cannondale Synapse Neo the Powertube is from top and have a attached cover. The top position is better shielded from street mud and the charge plug is on top. I prefer the top powertube solution. The display is prone to break if you skip over. The Purion could be protected mounted slithly lower than the bar, is not theftable and cost less than 50€ to replace. The noise from the Active Line is lower but i guess it is not for the speed version. The air inlet on the motor case is a mud collector. A speed pedelec is typical driven all-weather. For near 5k you should see a M99 pro instead. The non-speed version of the Kathmandu is about 2700€ here. The premium for the speed certification is ... and reduce the number of people which commute and do healthy. Blocking from dedicated bikes lanes instead of 25km/h limit is an insane regulation failure. So go away and buy a chinese electric scooter because authority classify you as a motorbike. In switzerland where regulation allows bikelane usage the speed/non-speed distribution is 25%/75%, in germany it is 0.2%/99.8%. Something to say: NO.

I agree about the fender solution being lackluster, the mud collector aspect of the motor cover, snd better display and light options. Maybe I’m being too soft, I just liked to see the light up high, the lightweight battery shield, the multiple sizes etc. and glossed over some of the other trades because I’ve become less price sensitive since I’m not actually buying the bikes. Gotta say.. Dayum this is a nice ride! The power is smooth and available. Super easy to move between power assist levels. And the motor makes you feel like Superman/woman. The ergonomics are also on point. For a commuter or casual rider the comfort level seems well thought out. Agree that the pedals could use a bit more grip, but that is a personal thing... somewhat subjective.

Have been contemplating an e-bike for a few years for commuting. This bike would be perfect. My hesitation has to do with being safe on roads with drivers so distracted by tech, and very few dedicated bike lanes. Would be great if you did a video on this. Excellent dialogue! Lots of useful info for somebody getting into e-bikes. BTW: Lights for '45's must be on by law in parts of Europe. Helmets are compulsory too. There are different requirements and laws in every country. Some insist on road riding only. No riding on cycle paths or forest tracks! Others insist on using cycle paths where available. [Denmark] 3rd party insurance is a must. [Denmark] Some countries demand number plates and registration. Lower age limits apply. [Denmark] Accidents and theft are unfortunately high for the '45' class. They are expensive and that makes them attractive to thieves.

Court I am a bit confused. I am in the market for an electric bike and have been watching lots of reviews, reading forums and talking with bike shops. I have really grown accustomed to your reviews and often watch other videos and wish that you have reviewed the bike because you provide so much helpful information. You start the video off saying that you feel like they did everything that you would have if you designed the bike. What confuses me is that I have heard you make comments about the little things you like about other bikes: side cutout for the front light, multiple LEDs on the rear light, cutouts on the rear light, aluminum fenders, top mounting battery vs down mounting battery, pannier bottom clip points, swept back handlebars that conform to the natural contour on peoples arms, adjustable handlebar stem, charging port at the top of the bike vs down by the crank arm, etc. The reason I bring all this up is I thought that I was pretty sold on picking up a Gazelle Ultimate T10+; alot had to too with the fact that the bike had all these small things that you have mentioned on other videos. And all those small things add up. But after watching this video and hearing that initial comment at the beginning I guess I am wondering if those things really do not matter in the grand scheme of things. By no means am I trying to criticize your review; just trying to understand how this bike is so much better than the Ultimate T10+. As someone who did not ride alot of bikes growing up and does not have much money to throw around, I want to ensure that I am spending my money on the right product. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Very well said! I’m sorry that it feels inconsistent. I am inconsistent… even though I try very hard to be objective. I must say that this bike pleased me because it did many things right, and perhaps I was influenced by some recent bikes that were not so right in my opinion, so my reaction was more a breath of fresh air and excitement. Comparing the Gazelle to this back to back would have a different tone. I also meant my comment at a high level vs “everything” being the way I’d like it. Since the grips, bars, pedals etc can be changed and pedals are subjective, I tend to discount those things. I like Bosch, I like the speed Pedelec, I like the handlebar lights, multiple sizes, good drive trail, nice battery cover choice (and discount the plug location since that’s probably a Bosch limitation not CUBE). I enjoy being positive and want to celebrate a bike when I feel that it’s mostly on target. I think people get mislead or untrusting sometimes, like Mr Mr here because I am not paid for the majority of reviews that I do, though I have taken $1,500 service fees before to defray the cost of travel etc. and I always put a notice card intro on those videos. I tend to be constructive, but you’ll see very detailed cons listed on my write ups back at the website for every bike. I also have a couple of friends who do reviews and we may just be inconsistent with each other. It’s a challenge, and I’m sorry that it left you confused. I’m doing my best and appreciate the feedback. Perhaps you could consider this on par with Gazelle, and choose the one that appeals more to you or had the dealer support or better price? I hope this helps.

Today I had the possibility to try the Riese und Müller Charger 3 and the Roadster from the same manufacturer and once again the Cube Kathmandu 45 625 exposed here in this video. I’ve already bought the Cube 2 weeks ago, but since the bike wasn’t yet put together and I didn’t have time to pick it up, I thought to give it a try today once again as well, using the demo-model at the shop. I am so happy to have chosen the Cube Kathmandu 45 625! I live in Switzerland surrounded by mountains, and that is why I bought the e-bike, but it is important to me to ride the bike without the engine whenever possible as well. And thus the Riese und Müller Charger 3 definitely felt a lot heavier on the road, the Roadster, of course, a little bit lighter than the Cube. But due to its thinner tires, the cheaper fork, etc., the Roadster, although CHF 1000,- more expensive than the Cube, definitely felt less comfortable. Due to the high step diamond frame, the stability on the Cube can match the Riese und Müllers pretty well, and it has an outstanding value for money with its finest components. Since I was looking for a step through e-bike for my girlfriend as well, I in this case definitely can say that the Riese und Müller Nevo is by far more stable, agile and comfortable than the Cube Kathmandu Easy Entry models. Here I would definitely go for the Riese und Müller Nevo. Due to the current world situation the supply with bikes isn’t flowing as before, and so it wasn’t easy to find a Cube Kathmandu 45 625 in my size. Even the other Cube models aren’t being delivered as expected before. Riese und Müller seems to have a little bit less difficulties with its deliveries at the moment due to the stock they have built up before. And the prices are definitely rising…

Thirsty Firstly, Great full review on this bike well done look forward to updates. I have seen this bike in the UK with the licence plate holder fixed on in retail shops. The way I see this with e bikes meeting people need range and speed in the European you are going to have to go with this like the 50cc motor bike people buying Chinese bike thinking there is away round this forget this UK we have the regulations and that's it 15.5 miles mph 250 watt motor or these bikes and go with regulations that's it in a nut shell and if your like me a very keen cyclists and want these bikes go for it and cube do something about the rattle front fender putting a great bike to shame and down grading the bike awesome bike well thought out for the commuting and touring alike, well done cube. Keep up the work with long range batteries once again what a beautiful machine the way to go cube can't enthersize this enough.

"Quick" question here: I am looking to sell my car, and use this bike for my daily commute. I live in a rural place, with some nice hills, bikelanes aren't fully maintained, but are still present, and my commute is 25,2 kilometers long. Now, I am not in my best of shape, but still manage the odd bit of exercise on a weekly basis. I can easily run 7-9 kilometers without being "flat" for the rest of the day, and in my youth, I did quite a bit of triathlon-training. So what I'm leading towards here is my question... just need a bit of background, for it all to make some sense. I am looking at this bike because, it's legal to do the 45 km/h in Denmark, where I live, and I am confident, that I can power the bike quite a lot. With the range on it, I imagine, I could use the Turbo mode the whole way (I can charge during the workday) back and forth. That way I can manage something between 35 and 45 km/h on average (just 1 stop-signal on the whole drive) with the hills and everything, if I'm using the commute as something of a workout as well. I imagine, I could do the one-way trip in something between 40 and 35 minutes... Here - thanks for reading - is my question: Is all of the above even remotely realistic? TLDR-version: Fairly bike-strong guy wanting to swap the car to this bike for his daily commute of 25 kilometers, expecting the trip to take around 35-40 minutes. Can it be done actually? :) I would REALLY like to get some feedback from people actually owning the bike (or having at least gotten some familiarity with it). :) I apologise for any cases of "bad English" as it is a second language. @@pepejeffdamn i have The pro 625 15min max for The installation of The chip & to set max speed 🙌 Saved myself 2k… just follow the steps and regulate The chip to a max speed otherwise you will have a error-code. The only difference is that in the pedelec-version you have “more durable” parts 😏🤫 enjoy!

Why would you design a bike with a chain drive in 2021? What’s the downside to belts?

They have to be used with internal gear hubs, which are slightly less efficient, and, except from the rohloff which is super expensive, offer a smaller range of gear ratio

Belt drives require a rear hub motor which is fine if your using it just for road commute, but does put more weight towards the rear of the bike and is less efficient than a mid drive. Also with a mid drive replacing components is fairly easy and the low down center of gravity is much better for bikes that you may want to take off road for some gravel riding, it’s very much dependent on how you want to use your bike. Pure smooth tarmac commute, belt drive. Hybrid commute/off road then mid drive

Yeah, I do a lot of metric stats because that’s how I learned bikes, but I’m from America and feel comfortable with inches. I’ve seen 200 and 203 for rotor size recently. I wonder why there’s a slight difference, maybe it’s brand specific like SRAM vs Shinano? Do you know?

@@ElectricBikeReview my point was that on the engineer's drawing board the item was deliberately made to be Exactly 8 inch. By design. But when the stats are given, it is politically correct to express the dimension of Metric values, therefore 203 mm is the Equivalent of 8 inch. The majority of the world Reject American habits of the inch system. So the odd-ball dimension of 203 is used. As to calling it a 200 is questionable, though very nearly the same.

Anybody contemplating a rock hard hardtail for commuting is not doing their back any good at all. 10 cogs at the rear are lumpy and not pleasant to cycle. The bike is not fitted with an ebike specific drivetrain like the linkglide from Shimano. Not worth the money and the faster companies like CUBE stop making uncomfortable ebikes the better. How difficult is it to make a full suspension speed pedelec with 70deg head angle? answer, not difficult.

@@SwiftySanders Cycle on the roads? Also you can go to most bike shops and get them to install the battery and motor relatively cheaply.

Yeh good luck with that, frame looks like it was welded with chewing gum, and put together with all the cheapest Chinese parts. Il take quality over cheap
