Cuckfield is one of the prettiest villages in West Sussex, full of beautifully kept old buildings and with a really attractive main street.
Cuckfield really has the air of the centre of a small town. Technically of course, Cuckfield is far more than a mere village. It's an "independent state", with mayoral elections that defy all the norms of normal democratic decency - but all in a good cause.
One surprising thing about Cuckfield is how good the shops in Cuckfield are for a village of just 3 or 4,000 people. The area is undoubtedly a prosperous one and Cuckfield has a great selection of interesting independent shops.
If you're visiting Cuckfield, then it's well worth putting aside a little time to visit the Cuckfield Museum, which is upstairs in the Queen's Hall on London Road. The museum has displays about Cuckfield's role as a coaching station, local farming and plenty about Gideon Mantell and his historic dinosaur bone discoveries. Mantell found fossilised iguanadon bones at Whiteman's Green on the outskirts of Cuckfield, kick-starting the Victorian craze for Paleontology in the process.
And if you're looking for a lovely place to sit, take in a great view and contemplate the more important things in life, the well-kept churchyard of Holy Trinity Church takes some beating.
