i hate anime It depends on the area. In some places, brood parasites are invasive species and they’re damaging to local ecosystems. Maybe there’s a case for hunting them then. In other places, they’re just part of the natural order of things. You say brood parasitism is new, but you gotta put that into perspective. Aristotle wrote about cuckoos killing their host’s offspring. “New” still means thousands of years old. There are lots of species and individual birds that are more than capable of rejecting the eggs of brood parasites. Cuckoos have built up a tolerance for the toxins and spines of caterpillars that can kill other birds and function as pests on crops and trees. For example, in New England, the North American cuckoo is one of the only things that can eat gypsy moth caterpillars (an invasive species that devastates native flora). And most cuckoos are actually really important for controlling moth populations.
@elijahculper55224 жыл бұрын
i hate anime They do sometimes make their own nests. But the nests don’t tend to be very good. Some species of cuckoos only sometimes engage in brood parasitism, and others always make their own nests. In both cases, the nests have a tendency to be flimsy. They’re easily dislodged from trees or collapsed under the weight of their inhabitants. Cuckoos just aren’t great builders. They also have to contend with the fact that male cuckoos are deadbeats. Unlike a lot of other songbirds, cuckoos don’t stick with one partner for an entire season and males aren’t interested in being active parents. That means a female cuckoo has to find all of the food to feed her young and can’t spend much time protecting her nest. Also, most cuckoos are migratory. A few months after fledging, they’ll have to fly thousands of miles. Cuckoo migratory patterns are grueling. They often include long stints over terrains that don’t provide them with opportunities to feed-the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, or open ocean in the South Pacific. They need a ton of food to build up muscle mass and fat reserves before that journey in order to survive. And one way they manage that is by killing off broodmates and convincing other birds to feed them. The species that have the most difficult migratory patterns tend to also be the ones who rely more heavily on brood parasitism. None of that is to say that chicks raised in a nest built by a single mother cuckoo are doomed. There’s ample evidence of such birds surviving their first winter. But they have a much better chance of survival if they take over the nest of another bird, so that’s what most of them do if they can. And that’s the trait that natural selection has pushed for thousands of years.

@Spooferish4 жыл бұрын
Experience parents mark the eggs, put it in different patterns. So when we see intruder egg they simply through it out. Also timing is very important , Cuckoo birds need to synch up with close by eggs with in nest otherwise, their chicks will not hatch before theirs . .. Nature finds the way...
@elijahculper55224 жыл бұрын
Ewa Choung It’s not uncommon for brood parasites’ eggs (like cuckoos and cowbirds) to get ejected from the nest. Parents that have raised brood parasites in the past are particularly capable of distinguishing their eggs from those of other birds and not repeating their mistakes. Most brood parasites eggs have actually developed thicker shells to protect the egg from getting destroyed by a parent that realizes what is happening. A cuckoo chick is able to chirp really fast at a bunch of different pitches simultaneously. Basically one cuckoo chick makes the sound of a whole nest of chicks. And that triggers an instinctual response in the parents to feed it. I think a decent analog in humans is how a breastfeeding mother will lactate if she hears a baby cry, even if it’s not her baby and she doesn’t actually want to lactate at that particular moment. Birds can’t lactate, but the do get a rush of hormones when they hear a nest of chicks that spurs a maternal response.

I've seen a couple of videos where the cuckoo removed eggs or baby birds while the parents weren't present. How is it this parent is witnessing this and does nothing to haltthese actions? Also, are birds unable to identify their own eggs and babies from another breed? I've always disliked birds bc I'm afraid of them, (😭don't judge me lol), but recently I stumbled into videos like this and have become obsessed with seeing them every since. So pardon me if my questions seem odd or ignorant. I'm just seeking the answers for my own knowledge and a better understanding. Oh, and yes birds still seem frightening to me, so I don't watch these chronicles if I'm alone at night😂. Be safe!!

Cuckoo birds lay eggs that mimic other birds eggs. They look almost exactly alike. That’s why it always seemed to obvious to me that the thing about how you should never touch bird eggs because the mother will abandon them is clearly a myth. They can’t tell what eggs they even laid much less if you touch them.
@marialuizarodrigues37092 жыл бұрын
Animals don’t think and assimilate things like we do. The mom bird don’t understand that the chick is doing that do destroy the other eggs. I’ve seen other mom birds reacting when the egg drops on the ground after the cuckoo pushed them out, but only to look on the ground and proceed to warm the nest. It’s simple like that… they can’t understand things like we do, they are not racional animals. About your other question, I won’t remember the species of the bird now, but they noticed that this bird can identify the cuckoo egg on their nest due to it’s different coloration from its own egg, so they hatch the egg using their beak and take it out of the nest. Now, the worst part: some cuckoo moms stay to see if the little cuckoo is going to be properly fed by the other birds, so if she notices that the birds destroyed her egg, se will destroy the whole nest. I mean… that is no concept of good and evil in nature, but Cuckoos have made their name to be one of the most hated birds ever lol

I recall a website or video somewhere on the internet that sometimes the cuckoo picks a nest where the egg doesn't get pushed out but the chicks are as big as cuckoo chicks and hatch at the same time so if the cuckoo happens to lay an egg in the species of bird that lays in that nest, it's just an extra mouth to feed, and is no big deal to the parents of that species. They might also make nests that the cuckoo can't push the eggs out of, so what happens is that mom notices an extra mouth to feed and is extra busy feeding it.

@@danielking1921 they also are evolved to hatch faster and the eggs themselves are nearly identical but larger. The parents will already favor the chick from the larger egg and obviously the one that hatches first gets the most good because it has been alive longer.

What if it’s in its own nest with other cuckoo? Would it do the same or are cuckoos really multiply through this process of hijacking other bird’s nest?
@zealgaming81612 жыл бұрын
Cuckoo's usually has a specific set of bird species that it preys upon. Most birds will notice if a egg is not the same color or size as their own. So different Cuckoo has different color and size of their eggs to match whatever bird they are parasiting on.

@@tonycruz6183 We human's are preprogrammed to do a lot of stuff too. When you are tying text on your keyboard once you got used to it. Then it becomes habit, or instinct. You no longer think how to do the feat, you just do it. That's why people who are not used to keyboards type so slow. Their not used to keyboards so they have to "think" what to type. Which is really slow. Think how you are breathing, now think how you are blinking your eyes. Then think how your arms feel, how your legs feel, how your head feel, how your tongue feel. All of that is instinctual. You can hardly focus on more then 2 of those at once.

Through fear, that no other alternative is available. Fear cause everything in existence to hold on to well known methods. The idea that "I have to take this option as there are no other options available to me". these behaviours become very easily imprinted onto humans and on animals minds, thereby passed on to their offspring as behaviours, at some point humans can raise their conscious and realise the difference between good and bad and they do them selves more harm by sticking to it if it's bad, but animals concious still stays instinctive so they are also free from the harms or negative effects of actions deemed morally wrong or bad.
