Hi Reed. Loved your repair video. My wife and I visited Germany in 1989. One thing I told my wife I was going to buy was a Black Forrest Cuckoo Clock. After visiting Neuschwanstein Castle and on the way back to Munich, we stopped at Heigl Clock store in Oberammergau. We bought one of the better clocks with 12 figures moving. Of course it had the music box. Had to order, took 6 weeks and arrived in excellent condition. The clock ran perfectly for 20 years. One of our Grandsons, 8 years old, wanted to pull the chains and pulled it too hard and the clock stopped. Just b4 Christmas 2014, I was given a Regulator wind up mantel clock that wouldn't run. I watched your video and decided I could fix the clock and give it to our Daughter as a Christmas present. It worked great and she was thrilled. I then decided I would tackle the Cuckoo Clock. Much more intrigate and was a challenge. It is equiped with the Rugula 34 with Swiss movements. I noticed right away why it stopped working. One of the gears and one of the stabilizer posts were out of their holes. Very easy fix. I oiled the clock, cleaned up the mechanism and put it back in the house. It ran like a champ. I ran the pendulem and the cuckoo gears and they moved with ease. I put the clock back together, hung it on the wall and it ran great. I haven't put the hands on yet, as they are a bit difficult. I was waiting for the sound of the cuckoo and music and I get nothing. I have a hunch I was suppose to set something on the front that operates the cuckoo and music. And you say? I need your help please.

There can be a quiet switch that is usually holding the cuckoo's door closed and that will quiet it totally.

Thank you for this video. I bought my mom a Schneider about five years ago. It stopped Cuckooing. Your video gave me a lot of reassurance as I ventured in there. Without your video, I would have been more intimidated. It turned out to be a jammed chain. Also cleaned and oiled it while in there. It is back together and working again. Thanks again.

Using this video i was able to fix my parents cuckoo clock that has been broken for over 10 years. Thank you for giving me a basic knowledge of how clocks work as well as the experience of repairing a clock, which for me was infuriating but over all enjoyable and very rewarding. Again thank you so much :)

I had it on a test bench to see it while running. I found that one of the smaller gears inside has a hole for a small pin and the pin is missing. I replaced the pin and now the Cuckoo is functioning correctly. Thanks a lot for you time.

Sir, I must thank you for the time and wisdom you are sharing with everybody. My mom left me a 30 years old E. Schmeckenbecher One Day German Black Forest Cuckoo Clock with the same problem the one on the video had. I hope I can do as good as you did with this one.

Thank you... I have a simple little clock like the one in your video. The pin came off the door hinge, and I made the mistake of taking the door off. Bird disappeared inside, and then the chain came off the cuckoo gear. This video really helped me, I didn't even know how to take the back off. I was afraid I would really break it right next time, and seeing how the gears and chains worked was just what I needed. Seems to be working fine now, so thank you very much for this video

Thank you for responding so quickly. No the pendulum does not stop only the hands stop. Yes you can feel the resistance when you try to adjust the time. There was only 1 clock repair person in our area and he had our clock for over 3 months. $300 later and still not working.

Im an aircraft engineer and have been able to keep ancient tools and huge machinery going all my life but NEVER a tiny clock, so now I will strip it as per this video and see it work again. I may even start collecting them!! Many Thanks.

Thanks for the great Cuckoo Coo Clock service videos. I was then able to go ahead and get my clock running perfectly with all the music and extra stuff working, too. My clock appears to have skin type bellows.Swiss made.House with a bird and a baker that come out with music. The music box section is in the top inside of the roof, away from the clock section. :)

Hi Reed! A am so glad to have found your video here! I just bought me a Cuckoo Clock - and I fixed the chains (one had gone loose during transport) and then my son accidentally got stuck in the chains and it fell down in the stone floor with a BANG! I thought this is it. The clock didn't work after that. But - since I apparently like fixing broken things (found that out during your video as well! ;-) - I had to take it apart and see what I could do. And now - it sits on my wall again - says ticktock - the chains leap through as they should and the little bird comes out and says Cuckoo. Many thanks from Sweden - for uploading and sharing your video here!

My father recently gave me his cuckoo he brought back from Germany in the early 60's,and I hung it off a nail above the fireplace, and it was working for about 5 min, then it came crashing down....the mechanism broke away from the frame(2 screws out of the 4) one of the chains broke in side, and 3 links came out. I was devastated. He doesn't know yet,and I can only pray I find a good local repair guy in Indianapolis to fix it. This video is really neat, and I wish I had your skill set to fix it.

I watched this video to learn how to do this in the near future, I did try taking off the face of my clock to get a look inside. I put it back on and nearly had a heart attack, I didn't put the hour hand on snug, so when I was setting the time, bumped it out o place three hours, took me a few seconds to realize that I didn't break the clock, thank god! Thanks for this video, I like the dancing animals on your clock, very cute. I actually look forward to cleaning my clock again, thanks!

Thanks for uploading this. My clock started acting up a few days ago. I cleaned the chain with rubbing alcohol, releveled it (to what it likes) and its running fine now. I suspect a bit of dust or dirt was the culprit. I do not want to disassemble it unless I really have to. The back does not come off as easily as yours. When the time comes I can see now that cleaning and oiling is not as mysterious as one would think. Just takes time and a bit of gentleness. Thanks again.

The second has music and runs but stops after a while so I think I'm going to have to take it apart more like this video. I did buy the oil like you recommend ... I've had to buy hands and the roof trim because it was missing one of the 3 chains is short, so I think part of it is missing... but I love it !!

When I was 16 I took apart our families cuckoo clock, well I took off the chains, and cleaned them, and cleaned all the exterior wood pieces. Eighteen years later I have inherited the still taken apart cuckoo clock. Tonight after watching you it is ticking again! Thank you for making such a detailed video. I noticed one of the billows has a small tear, but it does still "ckoo". The "cu" sounds good. Where can I get a new billow? I also need a new minute hand, it is almost cracked through like yours. @ReedLukens

I don't remember if I put it in the movies but just barely move the screw on the pendulum down if there is one. If not then just barely slide the pendulum weight down the stick just a touch like 1/64". Then if it's still fast the next day give it another touch. It might take a few weeks but I get mine to where I have to set them a couple times a week. It just takes patience... And then getting them all to cuckoo in harmony... lol :)

Hi Reed. Thanks for the time to make the video, learned a lot from yours and others on youtube. Been buying non working cuckoo clocks off ebay and started on my first repair job. I used brake cleaner to clean it and got the synthetic oil for lube. After learning how to rechain one and then letting it run without the hands on, I now need to take it back apart to check snail and rack from what ive read. I learn everything the hard way ha. I was wondering why they dont have the hooks on the chains to be able to come fast and easily? Like using a small key chain part so you dont have to keep bending the chain to take off the hooks and stoppers and avoid rechaining it. I also used cloth tape used on old wiring harnesses to patch the bellows till i feel like tackling that project after getting clock working if i do.

Thanks for the video, this was really interesting. I wasn't going to watch the whole thing since it was 45m... but all of the sudden it was over. It's crazy how the cookoo mechanism works. I never even really thought about how it actually did its thing.

Hi Kim, either the bellows are blown or the linkage is bent & hanging up most likely. Watch and see how they are closing & make sure that the air exit holes or whistles are not covered because this will keep the bellows from working also. If they are not spring activated in the mechanism then there is also a chance that the tops are hanging up. Most likely either the bellows are thread bare and will work fine by hand but not on their own or something is blocking the exit airways.

I gave my bride a German Cuckoo Clock on Christmas 1971, that sucker has been running almost continuously for 43 years. last week I had to make the first repair to one of the bellows and is back working like a champ and here is my secret to keep it running that long. 1) Only I can raise the weights before going to bed, not the wife or the kids when they lived at home. 2) Never advance or slow the time by forcing the hands, if it runs slow take the pendulum off let it catch up, fast stop the pendulum. 3) Only raise the weights at the top or bottom of the hour. One thing I noticed as the clock aged I had to raise the pendulum almost 1/8 of an inch from the original position when it was new in order to keep it as accurate as possible.

Sounds like your going to have to pull it apart. You may have to replace the bearing but the only way to know for sure is to take it out and see if you can rebuild it. You can soak it together in solvent to see if you can get whatever is stuck in there to come out, there's no plastic so no worries but it probably rusted inside the wheel. So it could wash out with solvent & it's worth a try.

The video was very helpful, but as is often the case with video makers of how to videos, you fast forward or skip details that you may think are redundant or self explanatory. To the ignorant nothing is redundant or self explanatory until we understand. Besides, KZbin videos can be forwarded by the viewer when only looking for one part to refresh our memory. Thanks for making this film.

Reed, I have a cuckoo clock almost exactly like yours for many years but it has only run maybe2- 3 months. I think it stopped working because I mounted it on the wall at a slant so the weights would go over a ledge under the clock. I asked a Yahoo clock group about it and they told me to soak it in ammonia water solution and rinse and dry it. It has never had rust or dirt before or after. Anyway, I have the mechanism out and the gears only turned a sixth or so of a rotation.
@ReedLukens
@ReedLukens 12 жыл бұрын
No it floats on the shaft but is one of the main drive gears. If you turn it, the hands turn. It just needs to be connected to it's opposite. If the hands aren't turning then there is either a worn out gear in there that's allowing the shaft to spin freely, a gear with a missing tooth that is not connecting to its opposite, or a broken shaft. Most likely depending on the movement I would bet on it being a black plastic gear with missing teeth has found its way around & disconnected the mechanism

Usually there is an adjustment door on the side but I honestly haven't had any problems like that with mine and there are different movements and adjustments. I would pull the front off or pull out the movement and check the rotating actuator that you saw in this video. I've seen clocks where the chime is missing, make sure that the hammer is positioned to hit the chime if it is there. Then if it is, adjust the hammer to where it is clearing the chime each time by bending the arm a little.

Easy way to clean a mechanism after its removed from the clock is put it in a name brand freezer bag and put about two ounces of lacquer thinner in and shake (be careful lacquer thinner is some bad stuff ) I tried it and it works well a very little manual cleaning was needed and all old oil residue was removed

I have just followed this video and managed to get an almost identical clock working again after many years of it not functioning, brilliant and thank you. Just one simple question - although it keeps fairly good time it does require 'winding' every 12 hours or so. I'm assuming this is normal but did think it would have been a 24 hour mechanism. Perhaps you would comment. Thanks again for a very informative and thorough video.

Yea & really look over the bellows to make sure they are completely sealed, sometimes they look great & find that they aren't attacked in the back. I would pull them & then test them when they are out since you have to readjust them anyway. This way you can really see what's going on and how they sound. Could have pin holes in it as well.

Pull out the movement, & mount it on a board, set the chains & weights on it and watch it run. On the main shaft there are a couple of gears, check the one towards the face & make sure that it is connecting with it's match and not slipping just past the washer. Then there is a spring loaded gear on the inside that doesn't have much play. Check the bushing holding the spring to make sure the gears are matched as well. Best thing to do is get it out of the box & running where you can see it moving

If you have access to an ozone generating air cleaner or an electrostatic air cleaner (as they are sometimes called) you could put the clock in a garbage bag and rig the machine to blow the electrically charged air into the bag with the clock for a day or two. I sometimes get clocks that were in house fires and this takes away all the smokey smell. You still have to deal with the tar on the clock and I liberally use Scott's liquid gold furniture polish on mine and wipe it down with a cloth.

when it stops does it just slow down or does it hit something & stop fast? Oil it first & really look at the gears. If it has been oiled then there is something on one of the shafts. In this video it would run & then stop fast because there was enough dirt on one shaft to force it to stop. You can listen to it for evenness in the tic toc. look inside on the floor for pieces of gears also.

That's great :) You can either just adjust all of the chains to the same length or buy some extra to add on. Generally if you buy chain, the color will not match unless you clean all of them. Put the weights on a scale unless they have the weight written on them and if one is heavier, it probably belongs on the music box but you can put it on the clock side to see if it makes it work. Still it will need cleaning sooner or later though :)

1/4 novelty cuckoo clocks run on one weight and only have one chain. They cuckoo one time every 15 minutes. The bellows lift wire works off of a wheel that usually looks like a four bladed pinwheel or a disc with four pins in it that is attached directly to the back side of the hour shaft.

I have a small bottle of clock oil. I don't do repairs but taking it apart is easy so i made these videos with you in mind. Once you get into it everything flows easily :)

That musical cuckoo clock is beautiful, especially the waterwheel on the right side.

If they are musicals those weights can be different but generally if it's still not running right it could be worn out bearings or even just the smallest piece of dirt on one of the smaller gears. Take the weights and put them all on a scale and see what's going on there to start. Then take the heaviest set & try them to see where to go next. I buy off of eBay sometimes, they may have the wrong weights but generally a good cleaning at least, or many times a rebuild is in order like here on mine

Reed. Great video thanks! I really want to work on my own clock. When I pulled my chain to rewind it I pulled it all the way to the top and now it wont move. Im going to try and take the chain out but im a little worried about doing that. Any ideas?

First, the case would have to be big enough. Then, you'd have to do a lot of modifying the case. Drill new holes for the chains. Put new thin blocks of wood to mount the movement and take off old ones, if the case used them originally. Do a lot of adjusting to the bellow lift arms and the chime hammer. Make the bird post fit. It's more of a job than it sounds. Good Luck.

So is the U shaped arm with the teeth coming back down and locking into the actuator arm shaped like a L or is is just dropping it and hanging there? Does it stop on the teeth or does it just fall all of the way leaving it unlocked? Could be missing a tooth on the gear. Honestly the only way to see what's going on is to pull it out again. You can look at it or take it in to have someone take a quick look at it if you can't see the problem.

Sounds like a good idea, is there a reason why you used lacquer thinner and not solvent?

Cleaning it helps but oiling it every year or two is what keeps it working. If it runs out of oil it stops. Before I put them back together, I have them either working in my hand or flying out of my hand & into the garbage if they don't. New movements can be found cheap if you look. I paid $10.00 for my last replacement movement :)

Yes that is correct you can adjust the gap out of the wire & bellow to make the bird move a little more. It doesn't move very much, just enough to move the mouth :)

The case would also have to be able to support the heavy weights of an 8 day movement. You'd also need to get one with a short enough pendulum drop to match yours.

The hour hand just presses on, so gently pull it off, then when it cuckoo's push the hand back on the outer shaft exactly at 12. It won't hurt it if it is a little off but make sure that the hand is in good shape and take care to watch for cracks when removing it. Lot's of times the hand will break right at the circle washer, so take your time and watch it close when removing it. It's best not to pull it off by the hand itself, just pull out on the mounting ring.

Hello Reed , Thank You for video very informative very helpful , A friend of mine gave Me a clock that needs repair , I'm currently in the process of repairing clock , this is a first time thing for Me , I've cleaned gear box inspect all moving parts chains wieghts bellows ect.. , oiled all moving parts , very thorough as You show in video greatly appreciated by the way , I've tested gear box manually seems to work well , My question is when I go to test by installing gear box and wieghts , hanging on wall the left side of the gear box moves freely as if possibly missing a gear somewhere that locks that makes that side work properly , I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong , does the whole clock have to be fully assembled? , or is it possible a gear is missing that would cause this problem , right side works great , Please get back with Me on this when You find time , Thank You again Reed , for a very informative video on repairing these clocks , My clock is pretty much the same as in Your video , also do You have a video on how to repair the gear boxes as well , Thank You , Reed .

Take the back off, then stick a wire up in there and lift the chain around a couple of links or you can pull the weight and S hook off and pull the chain through and then re-thread it. I've had that happen before also. Depending on how long it has been sitting, it may nee cleaning & oiling anyway :)

The angle to the bent wire connected to the bellow that is not directly attached to the lift arm needs to be bent a little sharper and the nail it catches on bent slightly forward. Good luck.

enjoyed your video, thank you! I just received the wood chopper with waterwheel like yours from a yard sale and got everything working but the music box/waterwheel, looks like i have some levers/wires not connected correctly?? Is it possible to do a short video showing the mechanical linkage and doodads that make up that clock? It would give me a great starting point. Thanks again!

Reed I enjoyed this video very much. So much that I've decided to try my hand at it. I have 2 nieces and 1 nephew getting married and I'm determined to restore them each a clock as a wedding present. Got my 1st one today, little rascal like the one in the video and immediatly disassembled it. Mechanism good, able to run it with my thumb and engage the cuckooing like you did in the video. 1 good, but aged bellows, 1 blown up, should I replace both and do you have a video replcing bellows top?

I just a bought cookoo clock. All new in the box 2017 non-musical 1day schneider from cookoo palace, didnt run. Time chain came off the spool, very difficult to put back on without taking the Bellows and movement out. Long story short, even brand-new clocks will quit right out of the box even if packed very well. I also have an old 1970's 1day musical cookoo clock. Pulled the movement out 9 times because time, strike, or music chain came off or something else wrong.

Can you do A video or some shots of how that larger wire the bird sits on is supposed to be seated. Mine doesn't move at all and it seems to sit rigidly on the works. How does that paddle on it supposed to sit?

The mechanism, while not rusted, had hair balls everywhere, I've cleaned it and like I said, operated it with my thumb, should be great when I oil it. Waiting on my oil, plan on using the toothpick method. It came with 275 gram weights, not sure if originals. Per Ronell Clock Supply, the Regulus 25 like this one is set up with should use 320's, should I replace? I really hope you have a video about replacing bellows tops.

Hi Reed, I just picked up the same (but colorized) cuckoo clock that you repair in this video so it was great to find your fabulous guidance on it's restoration, cleaning and oiling! Nice job! Thank you!! I had already cleaned mine up to where it is running well and the one question I have, which is not detailed in your video is: How did you repair the split in the bellows? (Sorry if this has been addressed earlier). One of my bellows has a similar tear so poor little cuckoo sounds a little sick.... Thank you again for your help. Susan
