Thank you so much for your videos! My local clock shop wasn’t all that interested in restoring the cuckoo clock I found in my grandparent’s attic and said it wouldn’t be cost effective. So I decided to try myself, with help for your videos. With an investment of under $100 for cleaning supplies and a few replacement parts, it’s now ticking away in my dining room. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge! This could totally become a hobby. 😁

Wonderful! to hear the exciting news on your grandparent's cuckoo clock. I try to remember to tell people what some of the parts do so if they are having a problem with their cuckoo clock, maybe they will know what to look for. Not all, but some of the clock repair shops will also tell you your clock is bad and hope you will give it to them for parts, so sad a lot of people have let their clocks go this way. You have a wonderful Christmas and a Safe New Years.

Thanks for the great videos, love them. Just recently i rediscovered a family treasure in shape of a Regula movement and by looks of appearance, a black forest cuckoo. I have nothing to lose but maybe a bit to gain by trying to get it to work better. As for cleaning can i apply or dip it in surgical alcohol, as im not confident to take it apart, and oil it. All of movement seem to be in good and working order
@justmike57 Жыл бұрын
Giving the movement a good blow from a can of air for your computer would help first. Just remember that not taking it apart will always leave the old oil and dust in the pivots, so you might try running the clock gears while dipping the movement in the alcohol. also using a toothbrush around all the pivots and moving parts. Good luck on your cleaning and at least this will be a good start Jacques O

@@justmike57 hi thanx. But it seems the cleaning alcohol( medical)version didnt do too good for mechanism. Run for few seconds with escape wheel. So i rinsed it ou good with light soapy solution then air dryed it hairdryer. To no avail, tried again
@justmike57 Жыл бұрын
@@jacqueso8424 after using the dish soap and a toothbrush for scrubbing, a good clock oil in each of the pivots should make the clock work again. Also, don't forget to oil the part that rocks back and forth from the pendulum. Sometimes there is a drag or friction there and as the wheel is turned with every tick, it will slow the clock down and even stop the clock. Also something to remember, if you didn't take the movement all the way apart, it will take time to get the clock running again. The old oils and dust in the pivots has loosen and is now gummy and that will stop the clock as well. To get it running again, oil you movement again then keep starting the pendulum every time you walk by your clock. You start it enough times, the clock will start running again. The new oil is loosening the old oil

Superb work as usual Mike. Your a real wizard at these things. I like the method you use to clean and oil these. Some have argued at me saying total dismantling the movement is the only way. I say its whatever method your comfortable with that gets the job done as not everyone's an expert. Totally dismantling it without knowing all the pieces, how they work or go back is quite intimidating. Especially with unexperienced people like myself when it comes to the mechanics of these. So your method is more comfortable with people like me. Just wanted to thank you for demonstrating that. I'd love to see you work on a cuckoo clock that has the cuckoo bird and a quail bird too. Keep up the good work!

I have had some of the same people tell me to stop showing people the wrong way too clean the clocks, but my channel for the clock cleaning is for people like you that just want to try to get their clocks running again and if they can find a clock shop to take it in to, the charge would be most likely more than the clock is worth to them. I have heard and seen people using all kinds of spray oils to get there clocks going again, and it may work for a while until more dust really gets stuck to all that extra oil sprayed in there. So this is why I try to help people with their clocks and try to explain what some of the levers and what not, do, so they might be able to solve their own problem. I also have my email below the video so if they are having a problem, they can send pictures and what might be their problem they are stuck on. Thanks so much for the good and kind words Sammy Roark

I have the same clock as you just worked on. i cleaned it and reassembled it. When I hung on the wall and attached the pendulum, the pendulum doesn't stay swinging. I have no idea why it won't run. It has been cleaned and oiled. Any Ideas or suggestions as what I can do?
@justmike57Ай бұрын
I would check two things. One, check for worn pivots, if the pivot will move from side to side, an 8 day clock has a problem with running with worn pivots compared to a one day clock that can run with a lot of slop from side to side. Two, check that each gear will move up and down, they call that end play. If the gear does not move up and down, the frame might be too tight and causing the gear to stop. I also stopped using clock oil on my clocks. I have been having a problem with keeping the clocks running with the clock oil. I now use motor oil. Full Synthetic, SAE 0W-20 is what I use now and have had no problem since I change over. I have a video on this subject as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/en3QXnatrLKhh5I

Very good videos, Mike! Thanks for sharing! I had a few questions, one of which you answered, regarding the liquid cleaner you use. My other questions pertains to the cuckoo bird speeding up on the video the more times it cuckoos: Is that a frequent problem? Any idea what caused that? Does that throw off the clock keeping accurate time, or do you need to reset it every so often? Whenever I have come across cuckoo clocks, and I could get them at a decent price, I did. I now have over 30 cuckoo clocks. BUT - none of them work. Not yet! I got them with the expectation that I would learn to fix them. And I will. They have always made an impression on me. I hope to come to love working on cuckoo clocks like you do. Thank you again.
@justmike572 жыл бұрын
The speed of the cuckoo doesn't effect the clock. I had another person tell me they put wax on the fan part to slow the cuckooing down to the right sounding speed. This is ok as long as your fan is still holding on and not broken, (depending on how fast the cuckooing of the bird). When starting on a cuckoo clock, start on one that only cuckoos. And a cheaper clock as well so if you mess one up, you are not out of that much money. Besides, you mess it up, you learn and should still be able to fix it.

My clock just gives one single coo coo on every hour. What do I adjust to get multiple coo coos on the hour?
@justmike57 Жыл бұрын
In my videos, I explain what each part does on the Front of the movement. Your levers are not falling down when triggered to do so. It could be that they are sticking from old oil and dust, maybe a spider made a home in the clock when it wasn't running or someone was turning the minute hand counter clock wise to get the right time and the little arrow that drops on the snail is bent now and needs adjusting so it will drop back on the snail again.

I do believe the the bar is pressed in. if it is broke off, you can try to supper glue it back on, but will not hold up to another cleaning and will have to be re-glued again. Great video. What areas do you oil? I assume you don't go overboard with the oil, but is there a specific oil you do use for cuckoo's?
@justmike573 жыл бұрын
You oil on the front and back plate where the gear ends go through. You need less then a drop of oil and if you get to much oil on, take a Kleenex and dab it off. Oil attracts dust and dust with oil is what stops your clock from working. They do sell Clock Oil. You can look it up on line for a clock parts site or they also sell it on E-bay.

I have a Cuckoo Clock that I have moved the pendulum all the right up is there something else I need to look at for adjusting?
@justmike572 жыл бұрын
Not knowing anything about your clock or what you have done with it, but if you are trying to get the clock to run faster, moving the pendulum up is the right thing to do. If it is still too slow, then it would be a good time to take the movement out and oil both sides of the clock and maybe blow out the dust. This is what they recommend if your clock still runs. If the clock stops, they recommend you clean the movement because the old oil has turned to a thick, shellac and dust build up. Hope this help you Mike.

@@justmike57 I think I have finally got it I had to move the pendulum up pass all the notches to holed it in place a little piece of tape so far has done the trick I'm thinking someone has changed the pendulum wire and it is to long but I not sure I know what I'm even talking about lol but think you for the reply I've really learned a lot from your videos. I will blow it out and see if that does the trick too.

Was the cleaning solution just ammonia?

kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3q0an93m7V2gdk This video is how you can make your own cleaner and not use ammonia. You would not want to use ammonia, full strength and leave your parts set to ling in the cleaner.

How do you tell if it is a 1 day or 8 day clock?
@justmike573 жыл бұрын
A few ways you can tell for the most part. 8 day has a larger size chain... but there are some 1 day clocks, with age, that are also large chain. Also the weight, if you have them with the clock. For me, I have a lot of clocks and I try different weights to see which one makes the cuckoo or music sound right. I don't think you can really tell by the markings on the works that I know of Michael Shenhouse.

Are you not oiling the pivots in your clocks?
@justmike572 жыл бұрын
The only thing I don't oil is the gong and lift wire arms. Maybe I don't show it on here or my hand is in the way again. Even after oiling, getting the clock timing correct is also important. Thanks for stopping by Jack Yavno
