HI Just Mike! Last Friday I went to an Estate Sale. I don't know why I asked about the clock on the wall. She said she had another one that was real wood and lead the way. I bought myself a broken Cuchoo Clock. I don't know anything about them. But I loved the carved wood. So today, I looked around here and found your video. I've cleaned out the cob webs and dust. Opened the back up and gave it a close look. Thanks!

Good Luck on your clock.... Who Knows, you might be lucky and just oil your clock with clock oil and the clock might just take off.

I’m glad I found your video! I was given an old family cuckoo clock that my mom purchased around 1967 from someone that brought them from the black Forest region of Germany: the bellows are shot and the hour and minute hands are not accurate.. luckily, the weights, birds, awnings, and pendulum are all intact. Not only that, I believe that the clock you showed here is the same one - right down to the color of the cuckoo. Your explanations “simplified” this for me that I plan on getting the clock up and running soon! Thanks!

Thanks so much for this, Mike. I recently inherited my grandfather’s cuckoo clock that he acquired when he was stationed in Germany. It hung in the den over his chair my entire childhood. It’s in pretty bad disrepair, so I thought I’d give a go at fixing it. If I use Dawn to clean the mechanism, how long should I let it soak? Thanks again!
@justmike574 жыл бұрын
The Dawn helps lift the oils in hot water. Swishing it around in the water and giving it a little time (15 minutes) using a toothbrush to help clean with, changing the water for more hot water and swishing many more times. Do note. After cleaning, drying and oiling. The works will still be a little stiff when you first get the clock running. It takes more time to get the oil moving again, possibly because you couldn't properly flush all the old oil and wear out. You will have to speed up the pendulum and not care for the time of the clock for a few days. I hope I didn't babl on to much and you got your question answered. Thanks for the great question.

I was hoping to watch you repair a bellow. The one I have has the top piece off the whistle box. I’ll have to look closer now that I know what it’s supposed to look like. Great information about the chains. My dad has a big one he bought in Germany. He repaired it several times and when I was little he put a special wire loop on the bottom that he could pull anytime just to hear it cuckoo. All of our friends loved to come over and watch the birdie!!Dad is 92 now and I miss that clock. It used to put me to sleep at night.
@justmike574 жыл бұрын
That was great memories you had with that clock and your dad. some of the clocks have a place to attach the wire to make the bird come out to cuckoo. For the bellows. I would buy a pair of them from an online Cuckoo Clock parts place. Check more than one out, because some are just out for your money. You need to keep your wire nails from the old ones and reinstall them in the new bellows. Also, you measure the bellows from front to back to get the right size. I use hot glue gun to glue them back on so I can install them faster and not have to wait for the glue to dry. Hope this helps you Cassandra Lambracht.

It helps to turn the clock upside down and dangle one chain at a time to catch the sprocket, then turn the sprocket slowly turning the clock back around. Once the one chain is in and through the two holes, us a wire tie to secure the chains together and close to the two holes. Then start your other chain in the same manner. Check out the other videos if this one does not show me installing the chain.

I repaired the bellows and they work, but the gears seem to have a problem. The big ones that are turned by the chains and weights don't move. The gears could probably use a cleaning but I'm not sure why they seem like they are seized. What do you think could be the problem? I tried oiling the different points like you showed. Maybe a good cleaning would be a good place to start

Glad I could help with your clock. The chain sounds like you didn't turn your clock soon enough and the chain has looped over a gear shaft, then back on the winder. Diving in on the clock just might be a good thing, but for sure, put any parts in a dish as you take the clock apart courtsNsession

Hey, Mike, thanks. I have a not-so-old cuckoo clock I bought in Germany 50 years ago. I have to take it down and clean it --- the cuckoo is sounding too quickly, the little boy who pops out the other side doesn't retract. But for now, I'd like to know how to tighten the hour hand --- it starting to slip and it feels loose.
@justmike57 Жыл бұрын
Hey, Richard. Normally the cuckoo bird, if it cuckoo's to fast, the weight might be the wrong size. If you have had the clock for 50 years, I wouldn't think this would be the case. There is no other way to slow the cuckoo without the weight size that I know of. As for the music man not retracting, it sounds like the music box needs cleaned as well. There should be a wheel that tell the music man when to come out and when to go back in. Not seeing your clock with pictures, I would only guess the music box is screwed to the top of the box. For the hour hand, you can just push it on the shaft to snug it up because the shaft is wedged shape. If you would like to send me pictures of your movement and clock, I have an email below the video.

Very helpful video. Just picked one of these up from an auction for 25 dollars. Works well but top part of the bellows on both sides are petrified. Think it could do with a cleaning. These mechanical clocks are lovely pieces and need care. Great video and thank you.
@justmike574 жыл бұрын
You can order new top part of the Bellows and keep the box that makes the sound. Cleaning and oiling is good it the clock doesn't run well and you have time to play with it. If the clock has all the pieces, you got a great buy at the auction. Thanks for stopping in Paddy Pup.

Just Mike thank you for replying. It runs well but I don’t know if it was ever cleaned and it’s definitely old. I was looking at your other video about changing the weights chain and the are old weights. I read some clock repair guy saying that in order to have a clock completely cleaned that leaving in solution is ok but still not the best. He was saying they completely strip is and clean that way to preserve it best. Your way looks very good and the movement looked great, Mabye they just want the money 😜
@justmike574 жыл бұрын
@@paddypup1836 To take it all apart is the best, but not totally necessary. I say, it the clock runs well, don't mess with it. The normal person just wants to get their clock running again and not have to pay big buck to pay someone else to fix it. It is true, that if you use dish soap and hot water, you might have to keep restarting the clock, until you get the new oil back threw the clock. This is why I started using the clock works cleaner for a deeper clean.
@paddypup18364 жыл бұрын
Just Mike thanks. I will take the movement out blow it off for now and tiny bit of oil both sides. Then just new bellows. I’ll do the solution down the line if I notice it slowing down. The parts are so delicate I could easily ruin it so less fiddling for me the better. Great help you are. Thanks

I am guessing you are talking about a key wind clock?. If so, without taking it apart, you can swing the pendulum everytime you walk by the clock, and in time, the spring will loosen up and start ticking on it's own, but this will take a while Phil Manz.

I have a Schatz 8 day cuckoo clock my Aunt gave me when I was a child. I watched another video where the gentleman said the “pivot” points were loose. My clock keeps good time but does not cuckoo. If I press the hour hand and it clicks it will cuckoo for several hours and then stop cuckooing. I suspect it needs cleaning and some kind of alignment but taking this clock apart seems very daunting. Any tips or insight would be appreciated and Thank You.
@justmike572 жыл бұрын
I just put a video out that shows what to look for too see if your pivots are moving around too much and needs Bushings. A cuckoo clock should have the movement taken out about every 5 years to re-oil the front and back of the clock and use a can of air to blow out the dust the best you can. If you clock stops ticking and will not keep ticking, then yes, it is time to clean and oil your clock totally. Not sure what you have for a clock, but depending on the age, the hands might not have the nut or nuts adjusted right to keep the clock cuckooing. The older clocks usually have either two nuts for the minute hand or a washer with a swuare hole, then the hand and then the nut to sandwich the minute hand.

What if it's not keeping the time accurately after being set. After some time the time it becomes several hours to about ten hours off. How would you fix that issue. Its a 24 hour cuckoo clock. It does keep the cuckooing correct for each hour and half hour, Its just the time keeps ending up off after some time. So it's just been hanging on the wall in the living room not really being used because of this issue.
@justmike575 жыл бұрын
The pendulum is what sets the speed to your clock. It the clock is to fast, then you slide the Leaf down a little at a time. Wait at least 12 hours and do it again if needed. Slide up if you need the clock to run faster. Thanks for the great question Christy

The issue I'm having at the moment when I tried toad just for the speed, is the pendulum is stopping either immediately or several minutes after starting it. It did it before but it would keep going if the weight was low enough. Now its just stopping if the pendulum is off I keeps going fast and doesn't stop tell its un wound when the weight reaches the floor.

@justmike574 жыл бұрын
The left side is for the bird to come out on the hour and 1/2 hour. There is a good chance it needs cleaned and fresh oil. You can try turning the minute hand clockwise. If it is very stiff, it also shows it needs cleaned and sometimes if you turn it clockwise for several hours it could free it up, but might not work very long and still needs cleaned Brian Preston.

Your videos are great, thank-you. I have a question about re-installing the bellows. The bellow install is easy, but I can't figure out how to re-attach the connecting rod onto the bellows once the bellow is in place. Do you have a video showing the proper way to hook-up of the connecting rod? I've tried with the bellows on and off but nothing seems to work for me. Thanks.
@justmike573 жыл бұрын
I try to hook up the wire on the bellow, then on the rod before I install the bellow. If I am going to install the bellow first then the lift wire, I straighten the lower part of the lift wire to look like a "L". On most cuckoo clocks, the shorter arm, next to the hammer for the gong, will attach to the left whistle box. and the longer will attach to the Right whistle box. Yes, I should make a video of this subject with closeups, but in most of the videos I have been showing or telling what I am doing with the wires.
@peterlinks6613 жыл бұрын
@@justmike57 Thanks for your help Mike, I had a couple of learnings but got both bellows back in. The bellow anchor points needed to be oriented differently, I was constantly binding otherwise. I backed out the bellow nails to open up the bellow working space (my biggest obstacle). Then I connected the lift wire to the bellow hook and lift rod, then slid the bellows into place. My side tolerance are very tight (1/16") so any manovering of the bellow kinked the connection points, but with the nails backed out it slid in nicely without binding the joints.

hello, my pendulum on my cuckoo just swing for about 25-30 second then stop. If i push it back it start for about another30 sec then stop again.. Is there an easy fix for this ? everything else work or have been repaired
@justmike573 жыл бұрын
Not knowing about this clocks history, If it has not been running for a while, the oil could have gummed up, along with the dust. Cuckoo clocks are considered a dirty clock because they are open to the air a lot. The chain drags the dust up inside, the pendulum space open and if you have music and dancers. They say a good cleaning and oil along with a clean environment and away from the kitchen should last between 5 and 10 years. There could be a chance that if the clock was stored away for a while, could start running again if you keep starting the pendulum every time you walk by it and it might free up again. Open the back of the clock to see how clean it looks will give you a small hint on the condition also.
