very very interesting, trying to move from english pool to snooker and been struggling with the path of the cue ball not easy at all to predict that when used to the smaller cue ball. this helps a lot thanks

Excellent explanation of momentum (mv). I play on an 8ft pool table with a same size cue ball. As you showed so well the small cue ball doesn’t follow a natural path and I found it frustrating particularly with top spin shots. I’ve recently learnt to use the American closed bridge for deep screw shots and can nearly generate as much back spin as with the smaller cue ball! Apparently Joe Davis used this technique in snooker!

Fantastic video. After playing for 1.5 years on Chinese 8 ball tables, I was looking forward to going home and playing English 8 ball, now I’m not so sure hahah.

Very informative explanation of the differences, with great use of visuals. Explains why I always found screw-back *so* much harder in Snooker 😅 Another really well-produced tutorial 👍

I was literally thinking about this today as im in south africa and we do infact use a smaller cue ball. And most videos on the internet are American and trying some of the shots they try dont yeild the same results.😅 now i understand why. Another factor here that i dont think you mentioned is the point of contact on the smaller cue ball is not in the middle of the object ball because of different radi. Very interesting and infact seems alot more difficult to predict as there are so many variables

Here in Australia it’s common to see 7ft tables with round pocket cushions but using 2inch cue balls.

That explains why I kill it at local bar with 8 ball and suck at my mates with English pool! Didn't realise cue ball size makes such a difference 😲

Great video as usual. What difference does the smaller cue ball make to rail shots?
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool Жыл бұрын
Thanks. It makes a difference to aiming. If the cue ball and object ball are the same size, then in theory if you aim to contact the object ball and cushion at the same time the the ball should go along the rail (I say in theory, because the pace of the shot, spin etc all effect this). However if you did this with the smaller cue ball you'd actually bring the object ball away from the cushion. As the cue ball is smaller you should be contactig the object ball slightly before the cushion (again depending on a few factors of course).

Am reasonably proficient county level player. Was in Portugal recently. Played on the equivalent of a Chinese table where the cue ball was larger than the object balls. Was good fun, but very challenging trying to adapt.

Another thing you need to consider it that the smaller cue ball doesn't make contact with the centre of the object ball it contacts below centre so aiming needs to be adjusted. Also, you cannot apply the physics of elastic collisions in reality to pool, it's close enough for the essence of this video.

Iv gotten an American pool and I can't get any reaction like I used on a English pool table. I understand the smaller white on an English pool table. But I was out a year ago in a club playing American pool and I could get so much reaction with the cue ball. Can you buy a lighter or smaller white ball for an American pool table?

Probably but I’ve never looked, I wouldn’t recommend it though. American pool is meant to be played with the cue ball the same as the object balls, you don’t want to start mixing and matching. However similar English pool and American pool appear they are very different games. It’s not just the cue ball either. Jaw shapes, pocket size, ball size, cues, cloth type, cushion shape, table size, all have a massive impact on the game and make the VERY different to play. There is nothing wrong with playing both but you have to appreciate the differences and understand how it changes your game.

@@PoolSchool Thanks, I'm going to try some different cues, the cues that came with the table are not the best, it's sounds like I'm mis cueing when using bottom even when I'm not mis cueing.

In all cue sports, a small cue ball is not the norm. Kiwis use a bigger white ball for their coin operated tables. They could have stayed with the larger cue ball for all their competitions, instead, they understood that all other cue sports use the same size cue ball and used that for comps outside the pub arena. I don't know or understand the reason for English pool to remain with the pub pool cue ball. For myself and others it makes no sense. All the World Federation has to do is grant permission for same size white balls to be used, problem solved. The difference in size and weight can literally mean the difference between winning and losing. Both Gareth Potts and Darren Appleton, after playing same size whites overseas, then coming back to small white, knew this and both are on record as advocates for same size whites to be used.

I think it is purely down to the fact that so many the of tables in the Uk (both pubs and pool halls) are coin operated, which require a different size cue ball. Like you say it’s a simple thing to change but then there would be a lot of tables that wouldn’t work. It certainly makes a big difference, hence this video.

@@PoolSchool A very sad reality to think that something that could have been fixed very early on wasn't, then left, for whatever reasons, long enough for people to make comments that help keep in place something I can only describe as, 'an anomaly within an entire system that will stay in place because it's become too hard to change'.
