@@joshsaunders6392 Its funny how Uncle Jack and the Waiter, actually used to have a youtube channel together. Thats where they started before becoming actors. You can still find some of their old videos. Like the "David Blaine parody" 😂

This is great commentary on their show as well. Basically saying that "other shows need to add laugh tracks to make you think things are funny when they really aren't" and kinda flexing that Sunny doesn't. Showing how gullible audiences are with their own characters

My! SANDWICH! But yeah... without a laugh track. How I Met Your Mother was a show about Sociopaths and a Sex Trafficker. "At one point I'm pretty sure I sold a woman. I didn't speak the language, but I shook a guy's hands, he gave me the keys to a Mercedes, and I left her there". [cue laugh track]

I remember seeing a clip of Big Bang Theory with the laugh track removed and holy shit it felt awkward, the laugh track is doing so much heavy lifting in that show, it almost makes it bareable. Suddenly all the weird pauses for the laugh track feels an awkward moment where the character is waiting for laugh from the others.😂

I love how at the start of the show we feel bad for how to gang treats Dee, but as the show progresses we just start understanding that yes, Dee does completely ruin things just by being herself.

Laughter isn't just a response to something humorous. It's also used to defuse and deescalate dangerous social situations. As with the Ross clip. It also acts as a catharsis for processing grief, anger, and trauma. But this notion of some things "Not" being funny is part of the culture of "Presentism." We are just a product of our environment, and we've 3 generations of people in the west who've never faced a single instance of true horror or terror. By that I mean inescapable danger. Never lived in a world without actionable accountability or civility (or at least by modern standards of the word). So, we've developed a view of Laughter as something you only do for fun, or when you're happy. Studying anthropology makes it all seem so strange to me, but being a historian makes me also want to just sit back and see where it ends up...No Doomer crap, just genuinely curious. Since Smiling for instance, is viewed vastly different from eastern to western culture.

Just so you know, Friends (mostly) did not use a laugh track. It was filmed in front of a live audience.

Sitcoms filmed in front of a live audience having 'laugh tracks' make sense since it's a live reaction, and you can tell the pauses in the convos it's made for live viewings, but comedy shows with laugh tracks that don't do that... if you ever watch some sitcoms on mute and see where the laugh track is added (in subtitles) like BBT, it's just off-putting.

I would say uncle Jack keeps his “artistic” (aka incriminating) photos and paraphernalia up in that actor. Also the fact that he came down in a Boy Scouts (or something of that ilk) uniform does not bode well… *shudder*

True laugh tracks haven't really been used in decades. Almost every recent sitcom where you can hear laughing was done with a studio audience. It does encourage laughter from the viewer, but when people reshow sitcoms without the "laugh track" of course it's going to look awkward because the actors are acting for a live audience. If those shows would have been done without the live audience, the actors would have acted differently. They still wouldn't have been as good as It's Always Sunny, but they wouldn't look as bad as the example you used.
