The COVID-19 pandemic has unexpectedly transformed the organization of healthcare services for an undetermined length of time and is derailing efforts implemented in recent years to improve health outcomes in Latin America and the Caribbean. In this session, we will address the most salient social determinants that are widening health equity gaps, directly due to COVID-19 or to the responses to the pandemic. Panelists will contextualize the social conditions that explain the amplification of those gaps and will discuss rights-based initiatives that strengthen the public and international responses to the crisis and redress any potential effect on widening health inequities. The panelists include leaders from the Global Movement for Sustainable Health Equity, the Health Equity Network of the Americas, and the COVID-19 Impact on Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (ISLAC) Project.
