Repairing the Cuisinart TOA-65 Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven with Digital Display #repair #cuisine #cuisinart #toasteroven - REPLACEMENT PART - www.ebay.com/i...
This dial seems to last around 3 years
Also, I was told this dial works on Cuisinart CTOA-130PC1 as well.

In case the eBay link turns stale it is an "EC25 hollow shaft encoder" SRGP200200. It appears to be a common part.

Well this is the first video I have witnessed on TOA-65 a Costco bought Cuisinart Air Fryer, that shows steps for disassembly, finding the root cause, and resolving the issue with its digital dial. Your indepth effort to fix the rotary switch has helped me what to fix and the time it will take to fix it. Cuisinart has failed to rectify its switch design and have been shipping the same defective units to many customers that request a free unit in exchange. I prefer to fix it rather than sending it to a landfill. Thank you for making this video! (sorry deleted my first comment by mistake)

Great video! I am incredibly "lazy" so after seeing how the encoder worked and all of the effort to clean the interior I chucked up electrical tape in my drill and applied light pressure to the knob. The goal here was to spin the knob at high RPM to create friction between the encoder contacts without damaging the knob itself. After 10-15 seconds I stopped and tested the knob. GOOD AS NEW! Even if you replace the encoder... grease will inevitably penetrate as opening the door sends a cloud of non-conductive vapor into the housing. Its a poor design all around. I don't mind, I nabbed my oven from a thrift store for $13.98 due to this poorly placed encoder! Tack switch is still gummy but I think a shot of brake-clean under the knob and some aggressive button presses will take care of it. Cheers!

Thank you for this video. This dial issue is guaranteed to happen to all units, which is unfortunate, because it is an excellently made product in all other areas. I was considering opening up mine to fix it as well, but I didn't think it would be that much work despite being straight forward. I too also hypothesized the grease vapours getting into the dial and causing issues, and a cleaning would resolve it, so it's great to see that you confirmed it.

You're welcome! I agree with everything you said. These units are well built and will last very long if maintained by either cleaning or replacing this dial.

Just wanted to add a thank you for the video. Got mine back up and running, only lost one screw out of the 80 they used to hold the thing together 😂. Oddly the replacement dial i ordered doesnt have the detents when i spin but it does still go up and down incrementally instead of jumping all over the place so its all good.

It worked for me thank you very much! My model number is CTOA-130PC1, but the procedure was almost exactly the same as in the video. If you have a Cuisinart and the dial looks the same, it probably is the same regardless of model number. The clips to remove the sides were a bit of a problem. They just hold the metal edge by sliding tightly on to it. I got mine off by using a hammer to bang the sides backwards away from the edge. Then to reinstall the sides I bent the clips more open slightly, to make install easier, and again had to bang the side piece forward. For some reason, the dial now works backwards from previous, but it doesn't matter. In other words, to move down the menu list, you now turn the dial counter clockwise. Don't know how that could have happened, since there is only one way to align the prongs and solder the the piece on the board. I noticed the new piece (ordered from the link posted above) is smooth rotating without the notched feel. Hopefully that indicates an improvement in the design that will make this one last longer than the first. ut

Thank you so much for this reply. You have provided useful information which I will use to update the description of this video. Regarding the dial functioning counter clockwise, I didn't experience that issue with my model, but I'm curious to look further into it.
@headholio
@headholio 9 ай бұрын
@@djab203 Now I have used it more I think the dial works fine, but either way you turn it, it goes the same direction, up the menu. For example in the time menu to decrease the time I turn it left or right and it increases time all the way to 2 hours or whatever and then starts over so I can get to 5 minutes. I have 2 theories on it. One is that I plugged the wire connector in backwards (the one from the dial board to the one beneath it. I didn't check to see if this was possible.) Second possibility is when soldering the new ring into the board, the part with 3 prongs, they are very close together and maybe the solder ran and connected 2 prongs together.
@djab203
@djab203 9 ай бұрын
@@headholio I really think your second possibility may be it. Personally, I do all my soldering under a microscope for that reason. These components are getting so small and they can easily create contact and have this weird behavior. If you ever get to troubleshoot it further, please let me know what you find. So far, I haven't heard anyone else with a similar issue. Thanks

10-minute contact cleaner method: Pry the cap off the dial. Remove 3 small screws holding inner knob, revealing the black rotary switch. Using spray contact cleaner (eg. Deoxit) stick the tube in the hole and give it a good blast. I have a different model TOA-130. After removing all 50 screws and coaxing the cover off, I couldn't figure out how to get to the circuit board. So I put it back together and went with Plan B. This worked for me. Time will tell.

I just put rubbing alcohol for electronics. Let it soak to loosen all that grease in there. Gave it a few spins with the alcohol. Blasted air in it to get what ever I can out. Repeated 2 more times and let it sit to dry out for about an hour. Plugged right back in and works like new. No disassembly needed.

For this particular part, I matched the look using google, then I measure the size of the one I removed until it matched perfectly then I placed the order. For the black bottom feet, I'm afraid that may be harder to find. You can try contacting the manufacturer for a part number or maybe they have it.

My main concern is what can go wrong with self-repair on a device like this. Is it a fire hazard if done by a careful amateur?

eff cuisinart and all the other companies that have these horrible crap dials. Tired of throwing good appliances in the garbage, the last being a 350 dollar Breville coffeemaker. Might try this fix but jeez what a pain. Looked for a replacement toaster oven and they mostly all seem to use these dials, except the most simple cheap ones. So I buy a new part and how long will that last?

I agree. All of these companies are doing this just because they know most people will buy a whole new unit instead of fixing it. They don't make it easier for the repair either. So far my family uses ours multiple times daily and this replacement so far is going on for 3 months and feels like brand new. I will continue to replace this part as long as this unit continues to work. I purchased my unit in 2021, so I'm I feel every 3 years this part will go bad.

I’m getting a full replacement for this unit. Do you think there is a way to protect the new one from the grease buildup? I’ve taken to applying conformal coatings on kitchen devices’ circuit boards to prevent similar issues with moisture. Hi. Because this unit gets so hot, I'm thinking it's impossible to protect, but I would recommend regular cleaning. I haven't tried it yet, but someone recommended the following: 10-minute contact cleaner method: Pry the cap off the dial. Remove 3 small screws holding inner knob, revealing the black rotary switch. Using spray contact cleaner (eg. Deoxit) stick the tube in the hole and give it a good blast.
