Culcheth Station on the Wigan to Glazebrook Railway Line

I remember running across the playing field of Newchurch Primary School at break times in the 1960s to see the steam train chugging past in the cutting (like at 1.10). We’d wave and the driver would toot his whistle. It was like a scene from the film The Railway Children. Happy days.

Wonderful - brings back fond memories of my childhood. There was a train service between WIGAN Central (Weekdays dep. 06:21) and Partington (arr.07:01) calling at: Lower Ince - Hindley South - Bickershaw & Abram - West Leigh & Bedford - Lowton St. Mary's - Culcheth - Newchurch Halt - Glazebrook - Cadishead - Partington. Thanks for sharing, it's really nice to look back on that carefree world in the early 1960s

I remember Culcheth staion well because I was brought up a half a mile away from 1936 until I left for National Service in 1952. There were oil lamps outside and the booking office had pressurised paraffin "Tilly Lamps" The waiting rooms on each of the two platforms had coal fires in them in Winter which were very welcoming. The coal yard was there and the coal merchants Bill Tomlin,Fentons and Parker filled their 1 cwt sacks from the railway wagons and delivered them round the village.

Great little video. I'm modelling a layout in N gauge based loosely on the area, nice to see that the trains I have in mind are correct. Glazebrook station looks far nicer in those days!

There is limited public transport in and out of Culcheth , just like Cranleigh. Another big village. So the streets and roads are clogged with cars. Madness.

The main problem with Beeching was his accountancy approach. If one looks at the "usage map" in his report this line was well used. He even suggested closing the commuter services from Bury to Manchester, Liverpool to Southport etc. The fact is the more well used a line, the more money it costs! This line was a perfect example. Bury to Bacup was running a twice hourly service right up to closure (every 15 Mins on Saturdays).... The music in this video is not appropriate however!
