Dogtooth is another creepy weird movie form Yorgos Lanthimos. The director of other creepy weird movies like Alps and Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Greek here. Yorgos has explained what the motivations of the characters are. He said that his film is an allegory for nanny states, and the kind of citizens they produce. He considers his film to be a meta-scifi, in fact.

Actually, it's more akin to a psychopathic state, as parents desire control over everything. They deceive their children about a world, fabricating an unseen threat (cat), fostering an environment of fear to manipulate and control. Interestingly, religions employ similar tactics; they function as textbooks for such behavior. I believe it resonates with Plato's allegory of the cave.

I liked Dogtooth and Lobster (which is just as weird) a lot. Sometimes I feel the lack of a true narrative drive adds to the experience, just like in some Peter Greenaway films. Real life is also like this. And I also feel that letting the images do their work (touch you, penetrate) is often more gratifying than the 'what is happening now' or 'where is this leading to'. You can read a book if you need that :) Thanks for another great review and giving these gems some attention.

I have movies that I judge on how often I think about it afterwards. I think about this movie all the time. It’s about eating what you’re fed without thinking, and the results. I stumbled on it, not knowing anything about it and I never paused it, because I like and read into these types of movies. It’s not for everyone, as you said, but it’s worth the hype for those that do.

Woah! I literally thought while watching it that it gave me killing of a sacred deer vibes without realizing they had the same director

Yep I agree with you regarding how tough the ending is. I read somewhere that it's a film about taking protective parenting to an insane extreme. Have to say I was fascinated and entertained throughout the film. Crushed at the end in a way that makes me fear revisiting it if that makes sense. Like some films are great but I can only ever watch them once. Nil By Mouth for example, Bad Boy Bubby... although I've seen Come and See a few times. Not sure how that works.

I like The Favorite a lot, and I hope Yorgos goes in that direction in the future as opposed to the Colin Farrell ones. I'm still interested in seeing Dogtooth tho

I feel like the feeling of " things just happening with little explanation" is the same feeling a lot of cultists have probably gone through and thats the point, its an almost non-chronological feeling that comes with the cruel nonsensicality that cult leaders devolve into. I think its intentional is what I'm trying to say.

“There isn’t anything to it that makes me latch onto anybody.” The director does this with all of his films. There isn’t a film I can think of his with any single character that the audience is meant to become attached to. That’s why the acting is always flat. They use the score and imagery to create the emotions and the messaging that are lacking in the characters. To create an atmosphere that’s deeply unsettling. But I take your point. That technique seems to have gotten lost though in this film. To the point that it bored me. It was boring. It was a boring film with shocking ideas expressed throughout.
