Great British character actor George Zucco often played villains rather than the hero but in this film he gets to play both. A thoroughly enjoyable film despite the low budget.

Character actor, Dwight Frye played the faithful manservant, Zolar to Elwin the evil twin brother in this movie. Dwight died the same year this film was released. As talented as he was, Frye was never able to break the stereotype of playing henchmen, hoodlums and hunchbacks in film. He was just about to embark on a possible break out role to portray, Newton Baker, President Wilson's Secretary of war in the former upcoming film, "Wilson". On Sunday evening, November 9th, 1943, Frye, his son "Buddy" and wife, Laura were boarding a bus to after viewing a double feature movie. They were on their way home after celebrating Dwight's upcoming film role. After a few moments on the bus, Dwight fell face down in the aisle and was rushed to the hospital were he pronounced dead of a fatal heart attack. He was only 44 years old. RIP Dwight Frye.

I love this movie, it actually got the Folklore right. A Vampire doesn’t have to be bitten or contaminated with blood. An evil sorcerer can enter a pact with evil spirits or Gods and rise as any kind of demon, especially a Vampire. Amazing they actually took the time to get the plot in-line with the folklore. Not to mention he has a charismatic, Darth Sidious type evil in him

Even better than Dracula in some ways,. I always thought Lugosi was just a goofy looking old man whereas Zucco is much more convincing as a malevolent being. The film also has the upper hand in being set in contemporary times as opposed to the 19th century. Lastly the addition of a kind of satanic influence over the proceedings has an excellent effect. Too bad it was so low budget. Much of the film is so poorly lit you can barely make out a thing and it would have been nice to have seen a few 1940's cars driving around.
