Not only a classic, but a masterpiece. Magnificent filmmaking.

I love to watch anything with Margaret Lockwood in it. My Mother was the image of her, and on more than one occasion, a stranger approached her and said, 'please may I have your autograph Miss Lockwood'.

@@ColleenD78 Thank you, and yes, my Mum was absolutely stunning. I recently watched 'The Wicked Lady' in which Ms. Lockwood co-stars with the brilliant James Mason. I have watched it at least a dozen times!

_Aaaaaah....._ A keen portrayal of the seminal "philanthropy" so prevent at the "heart" of the Industrial Revolution!!!! 🤐 Michael Redgrave delivers a sensitively ethical and softy gripping performance. 👌

The last scenes in this movie made me so angry. Men work in unsafe conditions so a few can get rich. Every few years, there's still a mine disaster that could have been prevented. And the mine owners swear things will improve. Nothing has changed in 80 years. Greed seems to be eternal.

I can't help bawling me eyes out, when the whistle keeps blowing and hundreds of folk running to the pit! Severe learning difficulties and PTSD etc-(Hold me head up high though- lived in Old South Moor-Stanley Co Durham and at end of the street was once a mine which had a disaster @1919' over a hundred men and boys died.)

Interesting film. Also interesting to see so many of the cast also in The Lady Vanishes made two years earlier.

Aye, the good old days. Working in a filthy underground pit, seven days a week with a half day at Christmas and a day off at summer, for tuppence a month and nothing when you were on strike and as a bonus you got Silicosis free of charge, but you could say “I’ll kill you” and not get thrown in jail. Aye, I fair miss those days too.

Was looking online to see if I could find a clearer copy and came across one (not clearer unfortunately) with different opening credits and narration at the beginning! Wonder if it was for a re-release.

Does anyone how in these older movies there is a serious 'mis-matching' of actor age and 'character age'? In many case you have male actors almost at middle-age portraying men many years their junior-often in their 20'? In the same way young women just out of their teenage years are often played by actresses in their 30'?(sorry ladies, this reflection on your changing looks was ungallant!)
@maryjomagar71549 ай бұрын
Michael Redgrave was 32 in 1940 (film), and Margaret Lockwood was 24. I think because of the style of clothing, hair, makeup, classic-film actresses especially often looked older and more sophisticated. If Margaret Lockwood had washed her hair and face, put on plain clothes, I would imagine she might have looked her actual age or younger. The relationship/marriage between Davey and Jenny is not as big a part of the book as this film portrays. The 1970's Grenada miniseries was much truer than this film.

Please don't apologise for speaking the truth. As a woman, I am very much aware that my 'older self' is no longer as beautiful as my 18 year old self. Oh well, as the French would say, "C'est La Vie".
@Mr.Grimsdale7 ай бұрын
I agree with what you said but would add that the main cast in 'Grease' were all older than the ages of High School students, ages ranged from 20 to 33 year old. There are other examples in modern times but as you say it seems to be almost the norm back then.

Funny how they had money for cigarettes and newspapers,they wernt that bad in them days.This is exactly what we get thrown at us today,same old bullshit about poverty,child poverty why don’t they find another way to work.Why don’t people today always blame everything except themselves,it’s really so easy to feed oneself if they worked harder.
